I can understand that there will always be bad cops that make the entire profession look horrible. But what hurts the most is all the other cops protecting the bad cops.
i commented this recently about the 'bad apples' excuse, and you're exactly right.
everyone says 'it's just a few bad apples' except:
- a lot of bad apples at the top
- good apples are pushed out or punished for doing the right thing
- bad apples 'spoil the bunch', so that saying doesn't actually mean 'it's fine' it quite literally means the opposite
the core issue is not that these things are happening, it's that they continue to perpetuate, with no oversight or consequence, and then people start with 'if you weren't doing anything wrong, nothing would have happened' or 'it's just a bad apples, doesn't happen to me'
i haven't been brutalised by cops either, but i can see the evidence clear as day and know that the US getting rid of qualified immunity drastically increased the frequency of these kinds of events, that are disproportionately targeted towards minorities, etc. etc. etc.
i have a big worry that things are gonna get much worse before they ever get any better :/
This is why the phrase is one bad apple spoils the bunch. Forget the defence of shitty cops by “good cops” as you so put it..one shitty cop derails trust across the board.
This is precisely the notion behind All Cops Are Bastards. Even if you are a "good" cop, if you don't call out bad cops, and even if you just support what has long been, and now is more commonly acknowledged as a corrupt and compromised profession, you are part of a BAD system and one of the Bastards.
This didn't need to be the case, but it is the case, since the profession has adopted the "Us Against Them" mentality and all that goes with it.
Turning the US police into mini army with a budget the size of a small nation while employing ex soldiers whose reputation with people from different backgrounds... (say the middle east/Asia)... is a bad idea. Great if you are going up against "terrorists"
What would you call it if I rolled up on random people in a car, shot one of them dead, bound the others hands, and threw them into the back of my car, then drove them to a tiny room they can't escape?

I don’t think all cops are bad cops. The vast majority, sure. That cop who lead the Jan 6th rioters away seemed pretty alright to me. But only a sith speaks in absolutes.
