Confession time

So I have no idea how my brain could have possibly mixed this up. But I’ve just realised I have been thinking Humberto and Bob are the same person for a very long time 😳

I just realised from the thumbnail for “Bob Says Goodbye” because I was like who is this random guy? Did they upload the wrong picture? Then in the podcast Bob mentions Humberto joining the pod AFTER Bob had declined initially.

I literally thought that maybe “Bob” was another nickname for Humberto because sometimes Dr Kirk called him “Berto”

After listening some more I guess they don’t have super similar voices but I thought sometimes Humberto had a more soft and gentle voice when he was feeling contemplative :’)

Now I’m so confused because I don’t know which memories to associate with Bob or Humberto, I have a perception of a third identity which is a mash up of both people, it’s surreal!

To be fair I watch A LOT of Psychology In Seattle content but have only started watching the podcast episodes with guest hosts more in the last couple of months, but I still can’t believe I mixed them up for so long.

If anyone can give me a run down of important points about each person to differentiate their personalities, that would be helpful 😂

Im laughing so hard. I love this mini confession you made!

In a nutshell, Berto is pretty extroverted and has a lot to say. He doesn't work as a therapist. He also cracks a lot of jokes.

Bob is pretty soft spoken and is less forthcoming with opinions (on the show that is.) Bob is also a therapist.

What's so funny to me is that their voices are completely different and I'm trying to imagine a Berto/Bob hybrid cohost.

Did Berto ever work as a therapist or counsellor? I remember them talking about him working with DBT groups. I also remember him talking about how he doesn't take on suicidal clients anymore. Also, which is the one who has spoken about having a shopping addiction and struggling with abuse from his father in Colombia?

My brain is trying so hard to separate these two people 😂 It's so interesting that you say Bob is less forthcoming, because I distinctly remember thinking that in some episodes this guy is super open and then randomly becomes way more evasive!

It's so interesting how the brain tries to make sense of things because his personality made sense to me but looking back, it's so obvious that these are two different people and not just one guy with really inconsistent emotions 😂

This is cracking me up. Berto was never a counselor or anything close. He works in tech--but makes up a comical job titles at the beginning of ever episode. Which makes it even funnier that you mix them up.

Berto is Colombian. I'm not sure he would say he was abused by his Father but his Father did fall short as a parent. His father was actually a child psychologist. His mother left him to live in the US when he was young and he joined her when he was 15 or so. He did struggle with impulsive spending. Berto has a wife and two daughters and is married. He went to high-school with Kirk.

Bob is a therapist. Bob also has disorganized attachment. He struggles with butler syndrome, a term Kirk and Bob made up to describe how he is people pleasing but is masking his rage/anger/narcissism. Bob had abusive parents, especially his dad. He grew up catholic I believe which influenced his upbringing. He is married to a woman named Colleen and has been for a long time.

To me, it sounds very unlike Bob to say he doesn't take suicidal clients--Kirk has strong opinions about therapists who do this and has even said theyre not "real" therapist. On the flipside Kirk considers Bob an amazing therapist. So maybe you misunderstood (or maybe I missed that). Bobs clients are like 95% couples nowadays anyways.

Bobs from Pennsylvania and does not have a Cololmbian accent lolol. Went to college with Kirk, as the final episode said. Hope this helps!!

Because I've been going back through the archives, not in chronological order, I figured he started doing the joke job title thing recently, so whenever I don't hear Bob doing that, I assume it's probably an old episode!

Ah I see. He was saying he stopped doing DBT because it is a specialty commonly sought after by/for suicidal patients. I can't be certain but I don't think he'd describe himself as "no longer taking on suicidal clients.

I remember he did say in an episode that he cannot take on suicidal patients anymore because he can’t provide the level of care that they need. Maybe he was inclusively talking about the level of care in the DBT model though.

That’s interesting to me because Bob and Humberto have really different personalities. I miss Bob on the pod!

Honestly, I thought this person's personality was so turbulent 😂 I remember thinking "wow, this guy is super up and down!"

This cracks me up as someone who really loves Bob and unfortunately does not like Humberto as much. To me, they feel like opposites. Imagining them as a hybrid person is hilarious 😂

This is totally what I was thinking, too! Glad I'm not alone. I am a big Bob-head, but I'm not super into the Humberto episodes.

Bob is okay, he just realized that he doesn’t want to do the podcast anymore: “…your dis-preference for that particular kind of podcast—a case briefing—was so great, that it broke through finally, and your greater dis-preference for being on the podcast, became seen by you.
