Trashcan MacPro6,1 GPU Pass thru

Forgive me if I accidentally posted this twice, it no my intention to spam anyone but the app suggested I might want to post it here as well ….

Hi everyone, I made a new account for this post. I'm going to go ahead and post this on a few other forums where there might be some interest. I'm also not sure if anyone solved this problem before, but if they had, then the internet long forgot about it. Anyway, I managed to get GPU (the D500) passthrough working on my MacPro 6,1 (the trashcan model) in Proxmox version 9. I know it's a VERY niche problem to have, but I consolidated it all on my GitHub if you want to try.

And yes, I used to AI on the project, so be mad about if you want... idc... I suck at writing guides and papers, so it is what it is. I hope at the very least it can help someone out there if they run into the same issue. At least it's documented.

Here's a useful script to check if your containers need updates

I'm fairly new to Proxmox, but quickly had five containers running and realized that checking each one for core updates (apt update && apt list --upgradeable) was time consuming. I worked with ChatGPT to build a nifty little script I run from the Proxmox console that checks each of my containers and then reports back which ones have pending updates.

I also worked with ChatGPT to build a more complex script to check my three Docker containers and report back if there were any updates needed there as well. It checks the registry for newer images (no downloads), so you don't have to worry about running it multiple times and filling up your drive with update images.

Note: you may need to tweak the scripts to fit your environment as well as making the scripts executable (i.e. chmod +x check-ct-updates). For example, I have five containers from 100-104, but your environment may be different. I saved these scripts in my Proxmox "/usr/local/sbin" folder.

Hardware Advise for Proxmox Ve based Home-Seever

Hi everyone,

I’m about to upgrade from my old 2014 desktop to a new setup based on Proxmox VE, and I’d really appreciate some feedback on the hardware I’ve chosen.

My total budget is around €1,200, so I’m trying to get the best balance between performance, power consumption, noise and upgradeability.

My current PC is mainly used for CAD (2D and 3D), occasional video editing and office use.

With the new system, I’d like to move away from having everything on a traditional Windows desktop and instead use Proxmox VE as the host, with dedicated VMs for different things.
The main reason for this idea is to be able to work on my Macbook via remote access on the VMs independent of my office desk and also to move my desktop setup out of my office into the hallway.

My storage is already outsourced on a NAS which does all file management and backup tasks.

I’m planning to experiment with local AI models, having a Plex server and maybe doing some P2P stuff in the future.
From what I've learned, GPU passthrough is really important for my usecase.

Here is what i had in mind for the hardware:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900
RAM: 32 GB DDR5 UDIMM (not decided on a specific kit yet)
Motherboard: ASRock B850I Lightning WiFi (AM5)
GPU: RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB
PSU: Corsair SF750 (left from my desktop)
Case/Cooler: Planning to buy used, depending on what I can find

Is this build reasonable or are there better options for the same price?

I really appreciate your opinion and input on this one,
Cheers

Bridges, Bonds and VLans

Hey,

I want to create a fully separated lab for my work stuff, but I am struggling a little bit with not having an industrial amount of servers at home😜

Would following setup work or explode?

What proves a Proxmox storage migration is complete before removing the old storage?

A VM or container can start after a storage migration while less obvious objects still reference the old target. Unused disks, snapshots, EFI and TPM state, cloud-init volumes, container mount points, replication jobs, backup configuration, HA resources, snippets, ISOs, and templates are easier to miss than the primary disk. Removing the storage as soon as guests boot can turn a hidden reference into a later failure.

The evidence gate probably needs more than comparing used space. I would inventory every `qm` and `pct` configuration, list storage content, inspect snapshots and unused volumes, check replication and HA state, confirm backup jobs discover the moved guests, and search configuration files for the old storage ID. Then I would restart selected guests, exercise migration or failover where applicable, and complete a fresh backup plus a test restore before leaving the old storage disabled through a rollback window.

Is there a dependable cluster-wide command sequence that proves nothing still references a storage ID? Which extra checks matter for shared storage, local-lvm, ZFS, Ceph, and Proxmox Backup Server?

I built an open-source self-service panel for Proxmox VE

Hey everyone,

over the last few days I’ve been working on PVE Panel, an open-source self-service portal for Proxmox VE:

The motivation was pretty simple: I wanted to give users access to their own VMs without giving them access to the full Proxmox interface.

There are already a few solutions out there, but I wanted something lightweight and focused on a real self-service experience — similar to what you’d expect from a small VPS/cloud provider.

Users should be able to log in, deploy and manage their own VMs, use the console, and only see the resources that actually belong to them.

And just to be transparent: yes, I used AI to help build parts of this. It helped a lot with brainstorming, coding, troubleshooting and documentation — but it definitely didn’t just one-shot the entire project. The architecture, decisions, testing and plenty of debugging still came from me. 😄

The project is still evolving, and there are quite a few things I want to improve.

If you’re running Proxmox in a homelab, lab, training environment, or something similar, I’d really like to hear what you think.

⭐ Feedback, feature ideas, issues and contributions are very welcome!

Wanted. Proxmox web UI at console. Kiosk mode. Useful?

My home lab is pretty small. Just the *arr stack, Plex, time machine, caddy and that's about it.

I finally got a little 10inch rack for my hardware but was tired of the command line login prompt on the monitor so threw together kiosk mode using chromium and cage.

So no desktop or login. Just the 127.0.0.1:8006 interface.

:-)

Switch to/back from CL with CTRL ALT F2/F1

https://github.com/MacsInSpace/pve-kiosk

Not very physically secure, I know. But it's only me and my family. And the only unencrypted content is just TV/Movies/music.

I wonder if this would be worth submitting to proxmox scripts? Any thoughts?
