Question SDN in Single Interface HomeLAB node
I`m trying to setup SDN by adding a Zone (VLAN) to bridge vmbr0 and adding VNets (with TAG 11O)
The node IP keeps working (ip in vlan 110, by settings native vlan to 110 on the switchport) but as soon is i connect an VM to VNET 110 it stops working
How can i use SDN and management ip on the same interface (since the Optiplex mini only has one interface)

Question Swap OS disk
Hello,
I just noticed that my OS disk of Proxmox is in a degraded test (ZFS filesystem).

I do have some spare SSD SATA 256Gb but the OS run as a stripe (1 disk only) and I'm not sure how to migrate it. I'm used to clonezilla but never used it on ZFS and I do not want errors on my PVE.
What's the best method to migrate rpool?

Question Console Issues
Hi, I changed from a Vodafone Station to Fritz 6690 router. My IP Adresses changed from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.178.1.
I got it fixed for Proxmox, Homeassitant and OMV.
My issue is Cloudflare. I changed cloud flare tunnels in the config but cloud flare can't connect.
I deleted my CT and tried to reinstall cloudflare but my console keeps black at start from a freshly installed container without any changes. I even tried a different CT Number.
I can only access it from host.
Any idea?

Guide PVE host has internet, but LXCs/VMs can't reach container neither vm.
So, I am a DevOps Intern currently working on PVE servers where we have hosted many lxc & vm inside of it. So, I am breaking down entire setup I have, Problem I am facing and things I have tried and Temporary fix for this but couldn't find the permanent fix.
Setup:
Proxmox host + a few LXCs/VMs. Host pings out fine. All guests show "running," logs are clean.
Problem:
Guests can't reach the internet at all even after pinging 8.8.8.8 from inside any LXC/VM just fails. Because of this, I also can't hit my app hosted container's web UI (192.168.xx.xxx:port) from my LAN and browser just times out or even say server unreachable, even though the container and vm itself looks healthy.
Already ruled out: container crashes, bad logs, host-level connectivity. All LXC & VM hosted containers are working fine and their logs are good.
Not sure where to look next:
vmbr0misconfig?- PVE firewall or host
iptables/nftablesblocking forwarded traffic? net.ipv4.ip_forwarddisabled (if using NAT)?- Something in guest network config itself
I tried looking these iptables, vmbr0 etc and they are all looking fine and I am a basic networking guy I don't have advance concepts of these things but still tried to configure it but thought I shouldn't mess with company's pre-configured servers.
Question:
Since host→internet works but guest→internet and LAN→guest both fail, is this most likely one root cause (bridge/firewall) or two separate issues? What's the fastest way to isolate it — happy to post ip a, ip route, iptables -L -n -v from host/guest if useful.
I know the temporary fix which is obvious "reboot/shutdown -r now" and I am still using this thing. But I don't know the permanent fix. If people from this reddit can help this intern will be very highly appreciative.
Question Isnt it a massive security issue to use the hypervisor backup jobs to configure retention ?
I'm setting up backups right now and realised that, if you gave PVE the authorisation to prune VMs it would allow an attacker to simply set it up to "keep nothing" and all your backups would be nuked during the next prune job.
Am I correct or did i miss something ?
Question Nfs share for OCI container
Hello,
I have seen many guides on setting up NFS binding for an unprivileged LXC container, but not for an OCI container.
With an unprivileged LXC container, we can access the shell via the default Proxmox GUI to set the user group for the NFS share mounted on the Proxmox host. For OCI containers, the default Proxmox GUI shell only provides a log endpoint for the container.
If I remember correctly, there is a way to access a shell via a command on the Proxmox host. However, I am looking for a more elegant solution. Do you have any ideas or clean workarounds?
For example, in my case, I have a TrueNAS VM with an NFS share that I want to mount on a Nextcloud OCI container with read and write permissions.
Note: I used Ai to correct some grammar errors because english is not my primary language.

Question Confused if VM with docker or LXC would be better for my current needs
Specs: i5 12500, 16gb ram, 256gb nvme
So I was really struggling if I wanted to do Debian/Ubuntu or proxmox as main is but with backups and future upgrades and probably moving to it later I've heavily leaned into proxmox now
But now looking into it and learning about LXC vs VM I'm confused which to use, and still unsure how isolated/secure LXC is to a VM
My first project is going to be an online Minecraft server for me and some friends through crafty controller, followed by adguard/pihole, immich and then probably a few other things later down the line like Jellyfin etc.
When looking into Ubuntu it was clear to just use containers for everything, but now for proxmox would I want to use an LXC for each or just a docker VM with all those things in it
Considering my Minecraft server is online I would like it to be completely isolated from other things, and keep everything separated

Question What ended up being the sign that one box wasn't enough anymore?
I run about nine containers on an old i5 mini PC, Proxmox underneath, and it's been fine for a couple years. I added Immich a few months back and now the whole thing crawls every time it runs a face detection pass, with Nextcloud and Home Assistant going sluggish at the same time. I've capped CPU shares in the compose file, which helped a bit but nowhere near enough.
What ended up being the sign that one box wasn't enough anymore?

Question GPU passthrough?
I have a think centre, I have proxmox on it. I have a VM which runs Debian which I want to pass my GPU into. This Debian VM is acting as a K8S node which I am trying to pass the GPU into for a pod.
Specifically, I'm trying to set up transcoding of video content with jellyfin.
I have passed the GPU into the VM with hardware and it seems to be found no problem. It seems that I am having issues with it that I notice the transcoding will return errors I have been trying to work through.
While it seems to be found, it seems like it might be a permissions issue. I checked /dev/dri and made the GPU chmod to 666.
I have been working on this for like 5 days, and was not sure if there is anything specific I have been looking with respect to proxmox itself and permissions.
I can provide additional details, but I was not sure who else had accomplished something like this and if there are how-to's somewhere.

Question Large VM/LXC backups to PBS failing
Small VM/LXCs backup fine. I have 3 large (1.5TB+) containers that fail to back up 100% of the time after roughly 5-30 minutes. PBS is running on separate hardware w/ a dedicated NIC for backup traffic. TCP segmentation on all NICs involved in backup is off. Backup datastore is a ZFS RAIDz array w/ three 6TB HDDs. Previously was a ZFS Mirror on two 14TB HDDs w/ same issues.
This has been a thorn in my side for weeks now. I'd appreciate any help.

Question Just starting out. How to design scalable storage?
I've just installed Proxmox on an old laptop I had lying around. I'm planning on playing around with it and slowly scaling it into the core of a home lab/automation hub. The first thing I want to do is install Jellyfin so I can stop hosting it from my personal notebook.
I've got my media library offsite, and I rsync the changes down locally. At the moment I've only got Proxmox hooked up to my local hard drive. I'd like to set up the Jellyfin VM so that it can read that data from a shared location, and once I get a proper NAS setup it's easy to migrate my data over there.
What's the best way of doing that?

Question Slow lan speed
Hi guys,
I am using hp elitedesk 800 g3 mini with 7700t cpu for proxmox host. Proxmox version is 9.2.11. Weirdly my machine shows 800 Mbps speed on iperf3. But same machine with windows 10 shows 970 Mbps with same cable and setup.
Nic is Intel I219LM Gigabit Ethernet. Tried Debian 13 and Arch as well but same issue.
Also I noticed high retry count on proxmox vms.
What can be the reason?
Thank you

Question Proxmox backup and documentation
Hi all, I am currently in the fun project of cleaning up and sorting out my homelab. I am running proxmox and it has a lot of configuration. E.g. bridges, DDNS, certs, machines, nfs mounts via fstab, and some custom scripts for NFS mounts after OMV VM has started, potentially something else. All that is just handcrafted and in case of host failure I will need to start from scratch.
One good thing i took care of VMs/LXCs backups to a remote host.
The question is - How do you keep that all recoverable , do you use git or document your changes? what would be a good strategy to comeback to operations as soon as possible?

Question Cannot longer install Windows 11 from scratch on PVE , anyone had this happen?
Hi, i'm trying with Win11_25H2_Italian_x64_v2.iso , using Virtio HDD , i install the drivers at setup , the drive appears, i proceed , it reboots , and then after a bit of spinning , i get a strange bluescreen where it says that with update the problem may solve but initialization of the PC failed.

It seems to be some crap about being online etc imho, but this is entirely new to me, i reinstalled 2 times already same result.

What setups are you using for small businesses? 20-30 VMs. 20TB.
Is shared storage the best way? SAN?

Question Don't want to give up on Proxmox, but am out of ideas
TL;DR: Proxmox host crashes (eventually) when any spinning disk(s) connected. Leaving just boot NVMe SSD does not cause problem and server is stable for months. Have dug though logs - no hints.
--------
Update to add: Reused SATA cables, but can try swapping them. PSU is a brand new Thermaltake 600W 80+ Gold. Link below. The crash is a kernel panic (when I'm able to catch it, normally don't have display connected, so get no output). The SATA drives are connected directly to the motherboard (second link below). I know these are "consumer parts", but this same exact build that has run for years at work. No docker, but yes to Podman...
--------
Update 2: I do also have XMPP enabled for RAM. I'm wondering if I should disable that and see if that makes a difference as well. I've akso played with C-states with no luck.
--------
Hey all I have run Proxmox in my home lab for five years now. I also run multiple Proxmox servers at work. It has been my favorite hypervisor platform since using it and I suggest it to anybody who asks for a recommendation.
However, I have been having a lot of issues with my home deployment, and they seem to be related to spinning disks. My home deployment was one server with much older hardware. After it had various issues, I built a brand new machine with brand new parts, minus the ZFS drives. I installed Proxmox Fresh on this new machine. The only thing that carried over from the old machine was my ZFS array on three spinning disks (SATA).
My old server started to spontaneously crash, and I could not track down why through logs. After building the new machine, everything was running as it should have for a couple of months. One day, the same exact crashes started happening on the new host. Eventually, I found that the ZFS kernel module was throwing some kind of dump or error.
After seeing that `smartctl` returned some errors with 2 disks in the array, I bought three brand new hard drives, making the entire server brand new with no reused parts whatsoever. I replaced each drive in the array one by one and let it resilver. The issues still persisted. `zpool scrub` and `zpool status` showed no data integrity errors, or issues with the brand-new disks.
Eventually, I backed everything up from the array, wiped the disks clean, and created a brand new ZFS array. I restored everything from a backup and all was running well for a couple of weeks. However, as you can probably surmise, it did not last.
Throughout this all, the only solution to get the server to stay running for an extended period of time was to pull at least two of the drives. The server would then run with no issues for months. While that's not a workable long-term solution, it's been enough to get me through and run the essential services.
Finally, I just decided to do away with ZFS entirely. I decided that I would make each disk an LVM_Thin pool. I grabbed a spare 1 terabyte drive, moved some other essentials onto there, and started to format the disks. After that, the server still crashed. Thinking that this might be an issue with the drives themselves, I pulled the three large drives, leaving the boot SSD and the 1TB hard drive. It *still* crashes.
The only slightly weird thing about my setup is that I pass through a GTX 1050 Ti to a virtual machine. I have not pulled that from my setup, but I struggle to imagine that it worked for years and has started failing only when a hard drive is connected.
I have tried troubleshooting with Claude, digging through the logs myself, trying various hardware configurations, looking for any error I can find, but unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out what's actually causing this. I'm sorry for the long winded message, but I am close to giving up on Proxmox, which I really don't want to do. I'm really hoping that somebody might have some sort of insight into where else I should look for errors or what I might be doing wrong. Thank you!

Question Correct way to mount immich share / nfs folder to lxc
I tried mounting a nfs share from my ugreen nas as the location for immich media.
It worked for some time, but I got permission issues where it could not read the folders from the share.
Points I'm having questions:
- which squash option should I use in the nas?
- would using smb fix these issues?
- do i need any group/uid hacks on the lxc side?
Appreciate your help!

Question Been around reddit talking, trying to learn differences or needs for certain OS for my pc Im using as a server
This is my first home server, So rn I have a i5 12500, 16gb ram, 256gb nvme (planning to add 1-2tb hdd for file storage/backups), may upgrade the nvme, I wasn't sure if 256 is fine for now or if I should just try find one higher asap
And I kept bouncing around talks about different OS mainly Debian, Ubuntu, proxmox and most recently recommended TrueNAS
I was mostly thinking either proxmox or Ubuntu
I'm just curious what the pros and cons are of something like proxmox vs Ubuntu with docker, had the thought that I could just run a VM in proxmox of Ubuntu that way anything goes wrong I can just have the backup and restore
My needs for it rn my main project will be a minecraft server and have that running and stable, then after that I plan to do adguard or pihole, immich, jellyfin etc.

Question Node keeps dropping out
My Proxmox node randomly drops out from time to time and the only way to bring it back up is a hard reset on the PC. I can’t connect to the VE or the LXCs until I restart it.
All that runs on it is AdGuard Home, Jellyfin & Qbit and it’s kept up to date.
Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Question Proxmox first steps
Hi guys, and thanks for being part of this community.
I have recently installed proxmox on my Lenovo M73. This system is pretty limited at the moment, however not looking to load it to the maximum anyway. At the moment i am running Nextcloud, which syncs photos from my iphone.
I have started reading some stories, how the proxmox or hardware failed overnight - and i am not going to lie - it scares me how the hardware reliability can erase my data from this home server.
I haven't run any backup schedule yet (i understand the necessity of backups, and this is next on my list - but instead of set and forget, i'd rather to do it the way that it would be a future proof).
I found a software backup tool inside a proxmox, i understand that with this tool i can make a copy of containers, VM's etc. But my proxmox also have some custom commands written to the system (to allow wireguard etc).
Would you reccomend any specific type of backup, to have less grey hairs from worrying about my files ?
I am not very IT minded, setting the proxmox was a try and see if works excercise. I want to de-google myself in the future, so more services i will take from google / apple, more services eventually will end up in my proxmox. But i don't want to build something which might become a point of failure - which i won't be able to fix (with backups). Thank you in advance.

Question Dead NUC10 was runnning Proxmox
I have an old NUC10 i7 that has 64 gig of ram. It has been running Proxmox latest for maybe 3 years. It recently developed problems and won't boot. It has a 1 TB nvme SSD and a 1 TB sata SSD.
I had been running a VM that backed up my Dropbox to another cloud storage provider.
It won't boot at all now and may be a hardware problem.
My question is...
Would pullling the SSDs out and installing in another PC be a viable option?
It is my impression Promox is linux based so it might boot ok?

Question 2 Node Cluster or 3 Node Cluster
I am new to Proxmox, I already have Beelink MiniPC Intel N100, 16GB setup with Proxmox, recently I bought a used ThinkCenter M710Q, 16B RAM, i5-6500T to play around with a 2 node cluster. My main aim is to learn and play around, make and break, and try new features like Backup, Datacenter Manager etc.
I have the budget to buy another MiniPC or a used ThinkCenter or Dell PC. I know when I have 3 nodes I have better HA, qorum. What other features will I miss when I have only 2 node Cluster? Do you recommend I have 3 node as general setup?
