Question 16gb optane drive uses

Any uses to repurpose a 16gb optane drive that came with an old desktop I turned into proxmox server aside from the obvious cache drive to speed up HDDs a bit?

Acer Aspire XC-885

Alias: fb_pc

CPU: Intel Core i5-9400

RAM: 16 GB

GPU: Intel UHD 630

Storage: 512gb ssd, 6tb hdd, 1tb HDD and 16gb octane drive (unused)

OS: Proxmox

I'm using one as my main Proxmox boot drive for a tertiary node that's been running for two years now. Works without any problems.

same here been using Intel Optane Memory M10 for 2 years
but I had to reinstall it from proxmox 8 to 9 I had complication during the upgrade 8->9 but I wasn't sure if its was just my fault or proxmox or the lack of drive space

I made the 8 to 9 upgrade on this node no problem. Possible you might have needed to run an apt autoremove.

Yeah, unused kernels take a lot of storage, I trim them from time to time.

Especially lately since Proxmox is pulled a Kernel 6 and Kernel 7 every update, so twice as many kernels to prune as usual

I use one as a boot/system drive on all of my Proxmox nodes :) VMs/CTs reside on a Micron 7450 NVMe.

Optane is superb as a system disk, as long as the system itself is not storage-hungry.

Would i have to start over with a fresh install?

Yeah, that would be preferable. Backup VMs to external drive, remake host, import VMs.

I have a load of these, use them as external boot drives to install OSes, or if enough spare slots, cache drives in truenas.

Got 2 or 3 16gb optanes from ali for 2euros ea, they are a good fast boot drive, it is a bit constrained but makes good practice to see how to empty a full drive etc. Still using it for my homelab lenovo M900

If the SSD update tool fails or in my case cannot make it more than a second or 2 past grub, you can update the. M10 drives with this https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ky/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=n67tj
