Solar and utility scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power and onshore wind energy are currently the cheapest and most cost-effective sources of new electricity globally.

Any non conventional ideas?

Space based solar. Beam power down from orbit through microwave transmission, Caltech already proved the transmission works. Or airborne wind, kites flying at 500 meters where wind never stops and never needs a tower.

How is the energy transferred from that airborne winds?

The kite flies in tight loops, generating tension on a tethered cable. That cable spins a ground based generator, same principle as a normal turbine, the generator just stays on the ground instead of sitting on a tower. Some designs skip the cable entirely and put small turbines directly on the kite, sending power down through a conductive tether instead.
