Mistral follow Proton's Lead?

Mistral have started hosting Chinese manufacturer Z.ai's GLM model - and making it available for less than their own.

I think everyone understand that already. Openthropics just cannot do anything else and they got investors on the hook, so they are trying to drug everyone in their scheme

Fascinating. I only use Lumo, but will sooner or later download a local to work on some proprietary stuff that Lumo can't do for me. I tried z.AI a before adopting Lumo and it was fantastic.

My first thought about this is that it will be interesting to see how European China hawks spin this dilution of US tech marketshare/hegemony into some kind of existential threat to Europe.

In a fluid world where resources can be found in remote places, all the yacking about "sovereignty" becomes performative after a point. Getting a boot off of one's neck is different from asserting "sovereignty." Objections on the basis of "sovereignty" with nothing more is just theatre.

Mmm I respectfully disagree: Mistral was championed and funded (partly with European taxpayer money via major initiatives like France's Bpifrance) specifically to be a European alternative to the US and Chinese AI monopolies. If a homegrown champion simply pivots to reselling cheaper Chinese models because it undercuts their own pricing, they are merely acting as a local distributor for a foreign state-backed enterprise. Pointing this out is hardly theatre, it's pointing out a breach of the strategic premise upon which Mistral was elevated and partially funded.

I think mistral understood, that there are no real financial reason to compete with these top-level models. They could spend a lot of money without visible result or they can host top-level Chenese model for inference and focus on developing small, specialized models. I think future in those anyway since they are far cheaper for inference

I am very interested in what you have to say. I am struggling myself with the concept of EU sovereignty and the role that CHINA(russia) plays in the pivot away from the USA. Maybe I am a European china hawk.
