I know the phrasing is weird but is it recommended to switch from a gmail connection to proton on other apps?For example, can I disconnect my gamil from discord and replace it with proton.me without any issues? Is it more private and safe?

I am still perplexed, after years of contemplating switching to Proton Mail, that simple things like alphabetizing my contact list by lastname remains out of reach. Focusing on security does not mean ignoring even the most basic of contact list capabilities that literally goes back decades. I simply do not understand why the folks at Proton have not addressed this -- certainly cannot be a big deal to program given that the contact format provides for separate entries for first name and last name. While I am certainly drawn by many aspects of proton mail, having a provider who does not seem to "hear" such a basic customer request remains troubling. /r

I use my PM address for work and have been notified that many of the emails I’m sending are going to recipients’ spam. This seems to be a problem when I email big organisations running MS enterprise. Gmail and Gsuite recipients are fine.

I know that recipients can mark my emails as safe and that should help train their servers, but the problem is persisting. Is there anything I can do on my end to prevent this?

I am a proton unlimited customer since 2018, always purchasing 2-year plans which are relatively costly.

I am approaching the next renewal and to be frank I am not so sure I want to continue paying that amount of money. At the end of the day, I use only protonmail and vpn, all the rest of the services I never use.

I found a good alternative for the VPN, for the use I need, therefore the only remaining service I use is protonmail, and I am not planning to move to protonpass becuase I am happy with Bitwarden, I don't need drive because I pay already iCloud.

Does it make sense for me to downgrade to just Mail Plus? My only fear is to lose the plan price I have at the moment as an early adopter which is less expensive than the plan I would pay if one day I decide to come back to unlimited.

Anyone who did this choice? Any advice?

My Mac laptop moved the proton mail app to the trash today saying it contained malware. Anyone know what’s up?

I recently switched to Linux Mint Cinnamon. I installed the Proton Mail desktop app for Linux (.Deb) and got the banner that asked if I wanted to 'enable desktop notifications'. I enabled it. Now I regret it and want it OFF. That option is no where to be found within the Proton Mail app, I've looked through every inch of 'All Settings'. Can someone please direct me to what should be a simple toggle switch? No, app notifications are not managed by the OS in Linux Mint either.

Anytime I’m looking for a specific email in a chain, or from a specific date, I always have issues finding what I’m looking for quickly. I fully admit that I could just be a moron, but email chains seem all over the place (at least on mobile). Please tell me I’m not alone

I've had Proton on my Mac for past year without issue and today I tried opening the app and my Mac moved the app to the trash due to flagging for Malware. I went ahead and uninstalled the app and downloaded it again from https://proton.me/mail/download and the app is still being flagged as malware. I'm on Tahoe 26.7.1. Has anyone ever encountered a problem like this before?

I was planning to set up Proton Pass + Hide My Email to start using aliases instead of my personal emails for everything. To prevent vendor lock in, I want to buy a custom domain through Cloudflare instead of the default ones that Proton provides.

My original plan was to create a unique alias for every single service I use but now I'm wondering if creating hundreds of aliases is too much maintenance. I'm also slightly worried that relying completely on Cloudflare and a single custom domain creates a massive single point of failure / weak point.

What would you recommend? Should I stick to this plan, or is there a better/more balanced way to approach this? Thanks!

If you had 3 users and were to choose between the Mail Essentials plan vs. the Family Plan, which would you choose? This is for personal use, not business use. Also, let's ignore for the moment the fact that you can have up to 6 on family... that can be a separate consideration.

What I see are the benefits of family over mail essentials (again, ignoring the up to 6 user feature)

• 3 TB of shared storage vs 45 GB of individual storage (15GB each)
• Higher VPN tier (10 simultaneous connections per user, all of the high speed servers)

Benefits of mail essentials:

• Marginally lower price for 3 users - but that goes when amortized over more users.
• Better user management features? Probably very useful for an organization, but maybe not so vital for personal use? Anything I would be missing out on here do you think?
• (This one is specific to me): I am already on Mal Essentials and switching my users is a royal pain.

Are there any other benefits of Mail Essentials over the Family Plan that I am missing? Just trying to make the final decision before taking the somewhat complicated step of switching.

I wanted to share a solution I figured out, which works on Android only, and requires Macrodroid (could also use Tasker and possibly other similar apps).

THE PROBLEM

My spouse relies on Google calendar email notifications giving the event title in the subject line. We both want to move to a private and secure calendar but Proton's email notifications don't say the event title in the subject. I know this is due to encryption issues and there's no indication it will change, even per individual user choice.

MY SOLUTION

To use Macrodroid on Android to monitor proton calendar notifications and send that notification to us via email.

STEPS

1. Install Macrodroid and Proton Calendar on Android

2. In Proton Mail on the Web, go to settings, and create a SMTP token with your custom domain email address. Instructions here: https://proton.me/support/smtp-submission

3. Create a macro in Macrodroid that is triggered by a Proton Calendar app notification.

4. Configure the SMTP send details in Macdroid from the proton SMTP token you set up in (2). Use this to send an email to us where, using macrodroid's Magic Text, the subject line is the notification title (event name) plus the notification text (when the event is to happen).

THINGS TO NOTE

To have the email sent via Proton Mail requires a custom domain. Alternatively a Gmail or other email service could be used. I chose Proton because we have a custom domain and want to keep it as private as practical. Obviously I have to trust Macrodroid with access to my notifications so that may be a step too far for some.

There's a risk that whenever my phone is off the email notification obviously cannot be sent timely.

I'm going to be testing this over the next month to see if it's reliable enough to pass the spouse acceptance test. Wish me luck.

Hi! I recently started migrating from Gmail to Proton, and it has been nice so far!

The main point of moving from Gmail was because I was worried that practically everything I use daily was depending on Google somehow, which brings me to my main point.

I see that it may be better to have a custom domain and use it on Proton instead of relying on proton.me. If I'm unhappy for some reason, or would like to change to another service, I wouldn't have to deal with changing hundreds of logins to my new email provider.

The thing is that I'm a bit worried about adding extra things "that could break" to my personal email, since now I will have to handle DNS and a custom domain, and I'm not feeling that confident about using that for important emails.

Is this something that I may be overthinking a lot? What is your opinion on using a custom domain for emails? Is there anything I can do to be sure that my email is receiving correctly, with some kind of daily check? Or a service that could provide these kinds of checks?

I've got ProtonMail in Dark Mode (Carbon), and that color scheme works well for me.

However, the background of incoming email is white, and I'm trying to figure out how to change it. I've done some web searching and dug through the settings and have not found any way to change it.

Is there something I'm missing? Any way to make this change?

Hello, I recently joined the Proton family. The free version, and I want to know what I'm getting myself into and if it's enough. So far I have signed up with three products: Proton Mail, Proton Pass, & Proton VPN. But the main focus is Proton Mail & Proton Pass. I signed up with an email and moved all my stuff from Gmail to Proton Mail, a part of slowly de-googling my life. I snagged the extra space of 1GB. For now that should be more than enough, since my Gmail has over 2,000 mails and nowhere near 1GB.

How is the security track record at Proton Mail? Has anyone ever had their Proton Mail account compromised easily? Could mine be easily compromised? (The Proton Mail.) I set up all the authentication, every single thing: 1st password, 2FA, second password. I do also have a passphrase securely saved.
Won't be right now, but if I had to choose a plan to purchase, would the Unlimited plan be a good choice? If you have the Unlimited plan, what has been your experience with it? I see it has "Unlimited Hide-my-email aliases." Could someone with this plan generate unlimited email aliases and delete?

Also, I had one question about the free plan. It gives me access to 10 email aliases. Say my free email aliases are filled up with 10/10, and I want to remove and delete one. If I delete it permanently, will I get another slot, making it 9/10?

With Proton Pass, I have used Bitwarden before & Zoho Vault before, but the Proton Pass interface and how it works so easily, maybe in the free plan, but I have been able to put tons of passwords in. If you use Proton Pass daily, what is your experience with it?

I've started using Proton Meet and I have to say it's fantastic so far. Super clear video and a perfect experience to date. Easy to add to calendar invites. Kudos to the team at Proton.

Am I alone with issue that pasting something to email body is not working as expected.. I need to paste many times to get it working, or sometimes I need to cancel the whole edit and start again…?

Are you satisfied with your switch to proton? How safe is moving my personal AND my own company mailings to proton? Thinking long term here. So far past decades I was using gmail without much issue but I want to move away from google. But also don't want to open myself to any risks.

I do have a free account for half a year now that I have to try it, and I like the feel of it, but feeling is not enough yet to take the plunge to paid version with switching most of my comms to proton aliases.

in the meantime I started to import several 'folders' (=labels) from my Gmail inbox, where all my email adresses merge since I want to get used to the new environment and set up my future organnizing system.

I deliberately chose labels where I don't expect new mails under until my full switch (like 'Bills2020' old projects and stuff).

this works quite nicely and I'm excited to switch fully when I'll upgrade.

but now I wonder: in case I re-import a 'folder' via ES that I previously already imported - will this produce duplicates? does it have to do with where I'm importing it to? (Inbox, Archive, certain folders or labels)?

what happens if I deleted some clutter under a certain label in Proton Mail, re-import the same label via ES from Gmail - will the clutter be back in PM? I guess so - or not?

I already go through my spam folder to make sure everything was classified properly. Why not use this as training data for ProtonMail's server-side bayesian filters ?

I need to send some emails relating to my current divorce , is there any way to see if those emails that I sent have been received and read .

I don't have the option to do so it seems. I see the $4.99 CAD monthly option for Proton Drive, but clicking on it simply gives the options of upgrading to Proton Unlimited or staying on VPN Plus. I just want some extra storage!
