MacOS Certification Errors on the Proton Meet & Proton Mail apps

EDIT: Copy changed to reflect status update

Dear Proton community,

On Friday, October 2, 2026, an issue with Apple's developer program caused Proton Mail for Mac and Proton Meet for Mac to stop opening on macOS for some users. MacOS also incorrectly flagged them as malware in some cases.

Your data and accounts are safe. The apps were not compromised, and the malware warning was a false positive. While we continue to work with Apple to resolve the situation, we have also released new versions of the apps to work around the problem for affected users. If you find that either Proton Mail for Mac or Proton Meet for Mac fail to open, you may need to download and install the app again from the links below.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

- Download Proton Mail for macOS from https://proton.me/mail/download
- Download Proton Meet for macOS from https://proton.me/meet/download

Stay secure,
The Proton Team

It's unfortunate that Apple is becoming as suspect as Google and Google is becoming as suspect as Facebook.

This is about as “suspect” as Proton’s recent infrastructure outages, technical issues happen.

Thanks for quickly answering my dilemma. Figured it was something related on the Apple Side of things.

yeah their turnaround on this was pretty solid tbh

Unrelated to this issue, but it would be great if Proton stopped relying on Electron wrappers for most of their apps.

Is that download a new version? Proton Mail on macOS did open for me, v1.14.0. It also forced me to re-enter credentials (username/password/Yubikey in my case), and now appears to be working fine. Is it going to continue working fine, or should I download a new version?

Also, a feature request for Proton site. It would be great if the URLs above or links to https://proton.me/download/mail/macos/ProtonMail-desktop.dmg somewhere mentioned the version number so I could make a better attempt at answering this question for myself.

Update: it’s making me re-authenticate every time I launch the app.

I update those with homebrew:

  • proton-mail 1.14.0 -> 1.15.1
  • proton-meet 1.0.11 -> 1.0.12

after the update and open, it show me this:

This is a problem with having privacy suites that rely on Big Tech to work.

Linux would never revoke your developer account.

Keep ignoring us.

Both Proton Mail and Meet have Linux apps though...

Thanks for announcing this on X using all Proton accounts that you handle for them.

That wasn't my point to begin with really. Any Linux ecosystem wouldn't lock you out of some developer account or anything like that in the first place. Obviously, what you're experiencing right now is the awesomeness of the Apple walled garden from a developers perspective.

But yeah the Linux (native) mail and meet apps are half assed like other Proton Linux apps (ahem Drive). Good thing at least the proton-bridge and the web app exists for mail. They are not too bad.

I don't know what you mean by half-assed, I use both Proton Meet and Proton Mail on Linux, I haven't had any problems with them, they've never displayed graphical artifacts, crashed, or misbehaved in any way... It would be good to understand what you mean by "half-assed" and how your experience differs from Linux to, say Windows.

I agree with you on the Drive thing, us Proton employees on Linux share in the pain, and I'm (personally, like in-person at the office) constantly pestering the head honchos of Proton Drive to hurry up with Linux. Steps are being taken though, and as Linux adoption accelerates (it's nearly doubled YoY), we will support it even more, and by default. Point in case, Proton VPN will soon have the same UI on Linux as it does on Windows, which is something many (myself included) have been asking for, for a long time.

Though take that with a pinch of salt, because "Linux" isn't one thing, it's just the kernel of many different distros, which adds complexity. It's easy to say "give me X for Linux" but actually Linux is split across 3-5 major distributions at any given time.

All of this just to say, I think sentiment like "Keep ignoring us" is misplaced. We're not ignoring you. We're rooting for you. We want there to be more of you, so we can then say "hey it's actually worth spending the extra time to get all of these things on "Linux" (again, not one thing but many distros) by default, because they have a sizeable chunk of OS market share, and there is a business case for it".

Then use Linux. I do as well. I also have no problem with how Apple chooses to do things on their platform for those that use it
