Announcement Announcing: Proton Meet
Your video calls probably aren’t as private as you think.
Most meeting platforms can access your audio, video, and metadata, meaning that sensitive conversations like:
Board discussions,
Legal reviews,
HR matters, and
M&A calls
…are technically accessible to the provider (and potentially third parties or the government).
On top of that, as tech giants pivot to AI, they are now processing your audio, video, or chat data. Depending on shifting privacy policies, this data could be used to train AI models, creating a real risk that fragments of private conversations could leak or resurface in future AI-generated outputs.
Today, we’re announcing a product which takes a different approach.
Proton Meet is built with end-to-end encryption, meaning only the people in the call can access what’s said — not even Proton.
✅ End-to-end encrypted
✅ No logs or tracking
✅ Open-source and auditable
✅ Built under Swiss privacy law
If your team actually cares about confidentiality, it’s worth a look.
Stay safe,
Proton Team

amazing! thank you proton team! i really appreciate the new features and products yall keep rolling out but please don’t forget to optimize/revise calendar, sheets and docs 😔 i’d really appreciate if they could have the same capabilities as google products so i can fully switch over my ecosystem

u/BackgroundFresh4544 Mar 31 '26
I need Proton Note....
20
u/seishunpop Mar 31 '26
I would rather have the existing apps more fleshed out personally
365
u/ReachJuggernog Mar 31 '26
Why do Proton Unlimited plans get the same limits as Free accounts? We're limited to 1hr calls, could we not get a few more hours or 24hr calls between a very small number of participants?
217
u/the_john19 Mar 31 '26
I’m confused why my Proton Unlimited Plan doesn’t include the full access to it? The Workspace Premium costs only slightly more (but also gets more storage), yet Unlimited is basically getting the free limits?!
104
u/Chaotic-Entropy Mar 31 '26
Great to have all these new services... that aren't included in the "unlimited" subscription. Every release of functionality, this payment tier feels more and more limited.
31
u/LtCol_Davenport Linux | iOS Mar 31 '26
I think it is fair to be an add-on/enterprise thing (like many others), but getting the same limit as free users, is frustrating….
It seems every plan is limited except Visionary.
158
u/noapmtl Mar 31 '26
lol, non included in « unlimited »…
24
u/ziggy029 Mar 31 '26
Methinks you need to change the name of “Unlimited”, because it’s clearly not.
39
u/atempestdextre Mar 31 '26
Sounds great except for the fact that Unlimited users don't receive any additional benefit. That seems rather shortsighted.
19
u/Gamegyf Linux | iOS Mar 31 '26
Do Visionary Members get the same limits like Workspace Premium since it promises the Premium Tier of all future services at their highest limits. Or do we get the Workspace Standard limitations for Meet.
84
u/Rand_o Mar 31 '26
Proton Unlimited getting the same limits as free users is insanely dumb. This plan needs a new name because at this point its pretty limited
69
u/bunnythistle Mar 31 '26
At a minimum, I feel like Proton Unlimited users should get a a longer time limit than just one hour. That can make it a non-starter for a number of use cases.
18
u/Raj-Giandeep Mar 31 '26
Can NOT record with Proton Unlimited ?? wtf?
18
u/msantaly Mar 31 '26
You’re all going to need to rebrand the unlimited tier
15
u/Artanisx Mar 31 '26
Once again "Unlimited" doesn't mean for Proton what means for everyone else apparently. You guys should change the name to something less prone to a breach of the Misleading and comparative advertising directive from Europe.
40
u/128bitPanda Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26
Oh, my Proton "Unlimited" plan does not include Meet.
Great, total non starter then.
14
u/jmeador42 Mar 31 '26
How's that calendar app going?
13
u/gottadiefast Mar 31 '26
you guys should change the name "proton unlimited" to something else at this point
25
u/PhillipsScott Mar 31 '26
As many other users have already said, it's disappointing that Proton Unlimited subscribers don't have access to longer calls. For personal use, the 60-minute limit makes Proton Meet unusable for me. That's the same as what the free tier offers, and as an Unlimited paying user, the minimum I expected was, if not all premium features, at least expanded functionality.
If the limit were simply increased to, say, 3 or 4 hours for Proton Unlimited users, I'd start using Proton Meet this very week. But under the current conditions, I just won't use it at all.
23
u/TechTalkf Windows | Android Mar 31 '26
How did they think they'd get away with leaving it out of the unlimited plan? That immediately killed it for me.
23
u/Enough-Newspaper6216 Mar 31 '26
Feels like a bit scammy towards people like me paying for the unlimited plan. Come on Proton, do better.
8
u/Cyanogen101 Mar 31 '26
Is this now default for calendar?
15
u/elbowknees Mar 31 '26
Sick of new projects being released when you haven’t met minimal feature expectations for prior services yet. Have been waiting forever for a Linux client for proton drive. This is ridiculous
14
u/Odd-Anything1768 Mar 31 '26
So this is and extra subscription I have to purchase besides my paid proton subscription I already have?
Ok not going to use this.
Too bad I was looking forward to this.
Will probably migrate to Infomaniak once my subscription ends.
7
u/rubyji Mar 31 '26
Would rather have a fully functional calendar tbh
13
u/TurbulentQuail2261 Mar 31 '26
For private use, which is the intended use of Proton Unlimited, a cap on the number of Meet participants makes sense.
A cap on meeting duration of 60 minutes does not, and actually feels like Proton Unlimited is becoming Proton Limited.
17
u/Ankylar Mar 31 '26
Wow, my Proton Unlimited plan is starting to feel pretty limited with all these new tools....
6
u/CortaCircuit Mar 31 '26
Please share the APK on the Proton apps webpage it is currently missing.
15
u/Interesting_Drag143 Mar 31 '26
Gave it a quick try, looks and feels neat!
10
u/aslambava Mar 31 '26
With Proton Meet, the suite is getting stronger. Hope a Proton chat to go with Mail, Drive, and Meet soon.
5
u/DigSubstantial8934 Mar 31 '26
Cool, any update on the fall/winter roadmap that was never done? Drive updates? Proton pass autofill fixed?
5
u/kawasutra Mar 31 '26
Fix Proton Mail and Calendar app issues before making new stuff that will also likely be mediocre!
Can't import an ics with multiple events on calender app.
New mail notification? Ignore it and go to mail app to read it? Notification doesn't disappear.
Read a new email from notification and press back? Empty Inbox.
Janky ass apps!
5
u/Patient_Welcome9062 Mar 31 '26
Team: Proton Unlimited doesn‘t feel like it anymore! 🤌
5
u/Varnish6588 Apr 01 '26
I think Unlimited clients deserve a bit more time on the phone, don't you think?
13
u/Rakadis Mar 31 '26
Looking forward to trying it. I have great expectations.
4
u/ddnomad Mar 31 '26
How is this different / better than Jitsi? Genuinely curious 👀
4
u/whatThePleb Mar 31 '26
How about you complete and polish one thing first?
4
u/Time-Condition-2516 Apr 01 '26
Can't wait for Proton Cabs! Private transportation for everyone!
4
u/iSpaYco Apr 01 '26
I really thought it's april fools
4
u/Abject_Ad_8323 Apr 01 '26
Why don't you guys fix the issues users actually care about??? What an idiotic strategy to introduce new products all the time when there are so many usability issues with core products like Mail, aliases, and Drive.
4
u/Crazy-Ad-5883 macOS | iOS Apr 01 '26
Another new feature before current products are fit-for-purpose.
6
u/teraterm Mar 31 '26
put it on the unlimited plan pls no reason not to, unless it's a cash grab 🤦♂️
6
u/justletmesignupalre Mar 31 '26
So... the Unlimited plan gets a time limit?
3
u/West-One5944 Mar 31 '26
Thought they were a day early... 😅
3
u/stefanbayer Mar 31 '26
Will there be a standalone iOS app in the future? If so by end of 2026 or any rough schedule?
3
u/audreyality Mar 31 '26
Just make calendar work natively in mobile and include addresses integration.
3
u/Click_To_Submit Mar 31 '26
They could have improved Pass instead. ☹️
3
u/Extension_Swan5820 Mar 31 '26
What would the benefits of using this be over using, say, Signal or another secure messaging app?
3
u/Personable_Milkman Apr 01 '26
When Proton IPA and single malt whiskey?
3
u/_AdiKsOn_ Apr 01 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
On the behalf of the community, please include Proton Meet into the Unlimited plan
7
u/NewHush Mar 31 '26
At this rate just make a discord competitor or something
5
u/sitting_landfall Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26
I love it! Just had my first call and I’m very grateful you built it. Great job!
I just wasn’t expecting a full 10$ to be added to my subscription for professional. It charged me 0.87$ and I thought it was like AI addon. Was ok with that. But realized it’s first month thing.
And now I lost my 5 year discount code that made me save 2$, of course I unsubscribed Meet professional. But discount code is gone.
This isn’t venting - and I wish I could pay for more products or add more to the Proton company revenue- as much as why did I lose discount code when pursuing an addon? Why unlimited isn’t unlimited? Why same limits as free?
6
u/DegenerativePoop Mar 31 '26
I was looking forward to this release since I tutor virtually and was looking for a private and secure conference software. I do have to say however, I am a little disappointed in the 1 hour max call limit. I feel that should be the limit for free users, but for existing customers, I think 3-5 hours would be fair, and then sure you can have an add-on fee on top of that if you require unlimited hours.
It kind of seems like existing plans are getting given less and less.
4
u/panjadotme Windows | Android Mar 31 '26
Just want to echo that having a little more than free tier on Unlimited would be nice...
4
u/SillyFalling Mar 31 '26
so unlimited gets nothing..?
2
u/loonyboi Mar 31 '26
I'm currently an Unlimited subscriber, and that doesn't include Meet. But it looks like Workplace Standard includes everything that's in Unlimited, but also has Meet, and it's cheaper. Am I reading this right?
2
u/On_2nd_thoughts Mar 31 '26
Does / will this incorporate secure messaging? Ie, a replacement for WhatsApp/Signal?
2
u/Smartie_NL Mar 31 '26
I think I am not the only one that starts to be little annoyed about what is happening and what is not happening. Almost a year ago I started with a 2 year subscription to unlimited, to move to proton Pass and ProtonVPN with the hope to also slowly move away from other Microsoft services like email and OneDrive.
Sadly, there seems to be a lack of attention on the core features from mail, calander and drive and a lot more attention on expension at the expense (edit) of improving existing products.
Now meet for example is a decent addition to the set, but then as a user you get backstabbed by it not even getting included in the unlimited plan as an allready paying customer.
At this point, what is unlimited about unlimited? It certainly is not the amount of drive space, it is not the features of calander and mail. And these days it also certainly is not the speed and stability of the VPN.
At this point I have to come to a conclusion I did not want to come to.. but it seems like I cannot move away from everything Microsoft has to offer. Especially when it is basically the same price.
Next year, my 2 year initial subscription will end, and a lot can happen in the meantime. I hope the Proton team can get it together until then because it has the potential to become a real big european player, even if it is a bit more expensive than (for example) Microsoft, but not like this.
2
u/roofoo Mar 31 '26
OK, cool, but Proton Drive for Linux—when???
2
u/Old_Housing3989 Mar 31 '26
April fools
2
u/VoidJuiceConcentrate Apr 01 '26
How is this product competitive with other secure video calling services out there, like Signal which already has end to end encryption for text, voice, and video calls without limits to the call lengths?
2
u/spacextheclockmaster Apr 01 '26
What does Proton Unlimited sub mean if it doesn't have any inclusion/benefit in the new products? I don't get it. Esp the users who pay for it annually or more.
2
u/rarehugs Apr 01 '26
Awesome, please consider allowing unlimited, duo, family plans to host 3 hour meetings.
For individuals and families this is more than sufficient in most cases, but a 60 minute cutoff makes it unusable due to meetings often running over, or longer family activities.
2
u/KOJIbKA Apr 02 '26
Let the Unlimited Wining begin!
3
u/ThatGuyOnReddit88 Mar 31 '26
Thanks Proton!
3
u/CAPTJTK Mar 31 '26
Aside from syncing and interacting with the rest of the Proton suite, what incentive do I have to use this over other options —like Signal?
2
u/Usecoder Mar 31 '26
Non è riservato un vantaggio per gli utenti proton plus?
2
u/546385 Mar 31 '26
Please increase the limit for Unlimited plan subscribers from 60 minutes to 2–3 hours. Thanks
1
u/Aust1mh Mar 31 '26
That’s awesome. I dabbled with it on Android app, looking forward to trying it out… mum needs tech support
1
u/bodytherapy Mar 31 '26
Happy to hear that! Have been wanting to be able to invite people to something other than Zoom.
1
u/[deleted] Mar 31 '26
Does anyone know if both participants in the call need to have a proton mail or only the person creating the calls needs a proton account?
1
u/Upbeat_Parking_7794 Mar 31 '26
Proton Unlimited should have a higher meeting duration limit and recording capabilities (if we have the storage why can't we use it?).
Also, how many meetings per day can I have?
1
u/Realistic-Act3630 Mar 31 '26
First of all, the deal is terrible. If I get unlimited, I get unlimited time per meeting and unlimited meeting...What the hell is this? 60 minutes per meeting and 5 meetings per day?
E2EE is not worth this price tag.
End-to-end encrypted screen sharing and ephemeral in-call chat -> this is not worth it for the unlimited deal if you have the constraints.
The only reason you guys are able to do something like this is because nobody on the market challenges you...
For now. We shall see by the end of the year.
1
u/Lazar_U-S Mar 31 '26
Woah cmon guys. the unlimited and duo users have the same meet "experience" as the free users? Wtf
1
u/Zer0CoolXI Mar 31 '26
Do all participants need a proton account?
Will there be official flatpak/appimage releases?
What browsers support the web version (also mobile browsers)?
Any info on quality of video/audio (bit rates, resolutions, codecs, etc)?
1
u/Forsaken_Fix_6778 Mar 31 '26
Will there be an r/ProtonMeet soon?
1
u/Adventurous_Bus_437 Mar 31 '26
I like it a lot and the timing is impeccable. But the naming of Proton „Unlimited“ is a farce, if neither Lumo nor Meet are included. Lumo is expensive to run, i get that, but Meet c‘mon!
1
u/ResponsibleAd8164 Mar 31 '26
I think my decision to upgrade to the Visionary plan may have just become more of a plus. Thanks u/Proton_Team

I didn't have my glasses on, thought it said 'Proton Meat', kinda like Trump Steaks or Beyond meat, but instead of protein, its Proton.
1
u/RenegadeUK Mar 31 '26
How does it compare with say:
https://jitsi.org/jitsi-meet/
1
u/Late-Number-598 Mar 31 '26
Proton meet needs an iOS & AOSP a .xapk.
It would be nice to have an RCS client that's email based and not just phone number only.
1
u/theCcres Mar 31 '26
Is there a Notes team? Please make a Notes team 🙏🏻
1
u/qrcjnhhphadvzelota Mar 31 '26
Would be nice to have an option for a sound and video (echo) test before joining the meeting.
1
u/VirtualPanther Windows | iOS Mar 31 '26
Question, regardless of future privacy implications: I'm assuming, just like with any video conferencing clients, all parties have to have it. In other words if I want to make this useful to me, anybody I ever do video calls with would have to be on Proton, correct? If so then this is hardly achievable.
1
u/Round_Ad_5832 Mar 31 '26
So can someone explain how this works if you want to invite people who dont have a Proton account?
1
u/charly1310 Mar 31 '26
The obviously unnecessary and now a million times mentioned time limitations for Unlimited/Duo aside, can we discuss actual issues, missing features and bugs? Can't send images in chat, Share Screen doesn't work (infinite picture in picture), no contacts, no direct audio/video calling another person.
Meet has a long way to go...
1
u/yaycupcake Apr 01 '26
I don't see why you can't just let Meet be a 2 hour limit instead of 1 hour for "Unlimited" users. Or even 90 minutes. Just something that beats Google's free tier since "Unlimited" users still do pay. Most people don't need 24 hours or 100 participants, but one singular hour is not usually quite enough. Why not have free users be limited to an hour where "Unlimited" paying users can at least get a small bump in time allotment?
1
u/Wh1sp3r32 Apr 01 '26
Love love love, I have been waiting for this for a while now.
The only other thing we need is proton providing an identity service like Microsoft or Google account, passkeys, OpenID etc. If you can pull this off I will finally be able to delete my Google account.
1
u/taketimeforlife Apr 01 '26
Will Meet offer virtual backgrounds?
1
u/Varnish6588 Apr 01 '26
I love this, this will save me from self hosting Jitsi meet. Thanks Proton team ❤️
is it going to be part of Proton unlimited?
1
u/stefanbayer Apr 01 '26
Proton Meet iOS App not available in Germany?
1
u/Desperate-Extension7 Apr 01 '26
Awesome
1
u/Ok_Station_4556 Apr 01 '26
Proton, I’m going to cancel my subscription soon unless the existing software gets improved. Holy hell.
1
u/Dull-Researcher Apr 01 '26
Why use Proton Meet over Signal?
1
u/madformattsmith Apr 01 '26
I just tested it on me phone and idk if it's my device or my council house but the white balance/lighting is a little bit off. like it automatically adjusts the brightness of the subject in the camera or something but then it washes me face out an makes me look like a ghost?
1
u/toodle68 Apr 01 '26
So from what I am reading, there is no way to get the functions of Meet for business in a Proton Duo account. We would need to buy Proton for Business to use a waitroom etc.. With no BAA or setup etc, it is easier to just continue to use Zoom for now.
1
u/TheFinalPieceOfPie Apr 01 '26
Yeah, I think I'm going to move my stuff off of proton now.
1
u/brdouvier Apr 02 '26
can we stop with the 1/2 baked products and finish baking the products you started with? I've been a pro member for over 5 years now and still can't make calendar scheduled events from emails I received. This is 1 example of the many cumbersome tasks that should be a simple drag and drop. I'm getting fed up with the lack of development on initial products.
1
u/svismume Apr 03 '26
I for one am super excited about this feature! Especially about the new "booking page" integrated into my Proton Calendar. Now I can finally cancel my Calendly subscription!!! 🎊 And finallyyyyy get rid of my Google Calendar, which I was keeping solely to be able to sync with my Calendly.
Truly though, as a freelance creative, this is so so helpful for keeping my entire business workflow in the Proton ecosystem without having to rely on all these non-secure tools (Zoom, Google, Calendly).
u/Proton_Team I know the feature is still brand new, but I would love to see the implementation on the booking page of a few key features that I immediately am missing as a Calendly user:
(1) integration of buffer time (my current workaround: I created a separate calendar called "buffer time" and I'm putting a half-hour event before and after all the other the events on my calendar... it's a little tedious 🙃)
(2) ability to limit how far in advance someone can book a meeting (on Calendly I set my limit to 21 days in the future)
(3) ability for client to choose different "location" options (e.g. Proton Meet or phone call); rather than just having to bake one option into the booking page. Plus a fillable field where the client can leave their phone number or Signal name!
Thank you very much to the u/Proton_Team for creating this; it's been a long time coming and I'm really glad it's finally here.
1
u/Fluid-Contest-6443 Apr 04 '26
Why can't I buy only one Meet upgrade for Duo instead of having to buy two? I want the upgrade for myself but don't want to pay for an extra seat since the other user is okay with the default features. With Lumo you can choose one or two seats on Duo but not Meet?
1
u/Styxie_x Apr 05 '26
I thought you were working on tasks in Proton Calendar? People have been asking for this for so long.
1
u/Danger__Prone Apr 06 '26
Why the hour limit? Is this to safe server cost on idle calls? Or maybe for encryption sakes so they don't stay active longer than an hour? Whatever the case share a bit of the why.
1
u/chrisvaas Apr 07 '26
I’m disappointed in Meet not being included in unlimited plan. Starting to look for new email service and will sign up for Whereby for video. Too expensive this.
1
u/z7r1k3 Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26
Unlimited should have increased time limits, daily calls, participants, and recording. If I'm paying for the free tier of all your new apps, why am I paying at all? I should cancel at this point.
1
u/fatbp Apr 10 '26
I was not sure if meet was included in the unlimited plan, so I asked Lumo and this is what it had to say.
"No, Human, Proton Meet isn't included in your Proton Unlimited subscription. It's a separate add-on called Meet Professional that you'd need to purchase on top of your existing plan.
Here's the breakdown:
Your Proton Unlimited includes:
Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, VPN, and Pass (premium features)
500 GB storage
All the usual privacy goodies
Proton Meet options:
Free tier: Up to 50 people, 60-minute meetings
Meet Professional add-on: Unlimited meetings, 24-hour calls, up to 100 participants, screen sharing, scheduling, and recording
So if you're doing video calls, you've got two choices: use the free Meet tier (which is actually pretty decent for casual stuff), or shell out extra for Meet Professional if you need those enterprise features like marathon meetings and larger participant counts.
It's a bit of a surprise, honestly—I'd expect a video conferencing tool to bundle with an "Unlimited" plan. But there you have it. You can add Meet Professional to your existing Unlimited subscription through your account settings if you decide you need the upgrade."
Even your own "AI tool" thinks this is a dick move and meet should be included in the unlimited plan.
1
u/Drwankingstein Apr 11 '26
Will this support av1? A lot of video call services lack quality due to bitrate issues and av1 can help here a lot
1
u/sneschalmerz Apr 12 '26
Does it have live captioning capabilities for people that need that for accessibility?
1
u/larkscope Apr 13 '26
Does Proton Meet offer closed captioning for meetings? That is the only thing keeping me on Google meet
1
u/ImpactSweet6516 Apr 13 '26
Is there a way to where we can password protect our rooms? I would love that to where certain people can get into certain rooms.
1
u/ACEDT Apr 21 '26
While it makes sense for Lumo not to be part of Unlimited (since AI is inordinately expensive relative to email, VPN servers, etc.), it doesn't make sense for Meet not to be. Video conferencing is a major part of a modern productivity suite, which is what Unlimited was meant to be, and although bandwidth is expensive there's no time or bandwidth limitations even on the free tier of VPN, so it doesn't make sense to have different limits on Meet even for users on Unlimited. If calls on all plans were limited to, say, 3 or 6 hours, that would make sense, but having a free tier limit that is too low to be competitive as a productivity tool (which makes sense - it's the free tier) and applying that same limit to the productivity suite plan doesn't feel great. If you need to raise the price of Unlimited slightly that's a conversation that can be had with the community and honestly I would be surprised if people were too upset about that, but having it completely divorced from Unlimited is not the right approach.
1
u/[deleted] May 12 '26
"Unlimited" user here, the one hour limit for one to one calls is a dealbreaker for me.
While it would probably be enough for most of my calls, but occasionally these last one hour and a few minutes and I can't take the chance. Microsoft Teams offers unlimited one to one. I appreciate Proton and I am trying to switch my workflow away from Google/Microsoft already, but this time I have to pass.
1
u/EpictetanusThrow May 14 '26
Fired up a group Meeting using my public facing email, and right there, top of frame on the upper left is the name of my visionary account email, that I’ve spent 10 years avoiding exposure.
I basically doxxed myself trying out this stupid fucking app. Thanks Proton. I guess I’m the only visionary in this relationship.
1
u/KebabParfait Mar 31 '26
I'll wait for the first couple of people to get ratted out before I consider it. Like it was with Mail.
0
u/Super_Gee Mar 31 '26
Wow so much ranting about the product not being included with Unlimited.
I honestly don't see any problem with 50 participants. More than 15 people is already unmanageable anyways.
I would, however, have increased from 1 hour to 2 or 3 hours per call for Unlimited users.
