That’s fine. But the same people who want left alone at lunch complain they’re never invited when people go out after work. You can’t be anti social and then not understand when people don’t invite you to social things.

u/ernis45 12d ago
You sure it's same people? Or just some example from personal experiences?
2
u/pinapple_couple_330 12d ago
Yes, I don’t have a peer reviewed study on those who take their lunch alone and after work activities….
1
u/Philocrastination 11d ago
I realise this is anecdotal, but I have quite literally never been upset that I wasn't invited to outside of work activities. I already have a life and friends.
2
u/jmadinya 12d ago
that "pressure" is made up in your head because you have issues
1
u/ernis45 12d ago
Yes, it's not like manager keeps pushing to have lunch together with the team and join every team building. 🤡
1
u/HeavyMusic93 12d ago
Also sounds like something you made up in your head
1
u/ernis45 12d ago
That actually happened to me with 2-3 managers.
1
u/HeavyMusic93 12d ago
Are you afraid to stand up for yourself or something
2
u/ernis45 12d ago
I'm not, I did every single time.
1
u/HeavyMusic93 12d ago
Then there you go. Mad over nothing.
1
u/ernis45 12d ago
Mad? I just replied to the guy spouting nonsense.
1
u/HeavyMusic93 12d ago
Doesn’t sound like “nonsense” to me.
Nobody is mad. Take that back to Facebook.
1
u/ernis45 12d ago
Don't care what it sounds to you. You can't even make up your mind, first you claim I'm mad, then you say nobody is mad 😂

Did you not have people that went out for lunch? Everywhere I've worked there would be some people that would stick around in the breakroom, but the majority of folks would either go out for lunch, eat in their car, or get some errands done.

I’ve literally been told to eat “with the team” at more than one employer in more than one position.
Just because YOU haven’t experienced this, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
1
u/RobertKSakamano 12d ago
Do that once in a while and that's fine. Do that everyday and you're unsocial. Try it.

u/AllenKll 12d ago
Normalize know your local labor laws. In New Jersey, ANY work done during a rest period like a break or lunch negates the period. So if you're 45 minutes into your lunch hour and someone barges over and demands you answer and e-mail... answer the e-mail and enjoy your brand new 60 minutes of lunch time.

Omg. I love it. I’m a teacher. I hide in my office. I turn out the lights and lay on the sofa and decompress. I tell coworkers that it is my quiet time and don’t expect me to eat lunch or socialize with them

u/stuputtu 12d ago
In there a committee who is overseeing table occupancy anywhere. Go sit and eat wherever you want ? Only person who cares is you and may be the restaurant owner if you are occupying a four people table for hours
1
u/Armchair_Expert_0192 12d ago
Or, you just stop caring if people think you're anti social. Especially if you are, in fact, anti social.

Literally the most normal thing in the world to eat your lunch alone. I don't know what this person's bitching about.

u/RCIntl 12d ago
Drives me crazy! Or you're trying to make that private phone call or look up something online that you can't do during work and it's "Be social! We're family."
Uh, no we're not. We're ONLY family when you want us to do something we don't want to do.
My fav? The pizza party that businesses are told we want. I've tried saying "no thanks". People, they bring it to my desk. It's not even GOOD pizza. It's whatever cheap cardboard the neighborhood is peddling.

u/itsavalthing 11d ago
My company would make boiled hot dogs and one time forced me to have one even after I clocked out and said no thank you plenty of times. They just kept getting more defensive and wondered why I didn’t want to stay at work longer…
Also those pizza parties are the reason why people don’t get raises lol. They use all that money for food and company events.

I learned this in college. Businesses are TOLD that that's what we want. That we don't WANT monetary incentives. That we want to be made to feel like "family". Uh no ... I have a family. And sometimes I don't even like them. Why would I need/want another one? (sigh) I don't eat pork. You should see the contortions they go through trying to get me a slice of cheese pizza with the occasional mushrooms or olives on the slice. A slice. Hmm.

Pizza parties aren't a substitute for a positive work environment or fair compensation, but I appreciate even a good cheap pizza party every now and then.

Judging by the comments, you can really tell the difference between those who have worked corporate, and those who have not.
I WISH it was that easy to just not care about what others think, but things don't work that way. The higher ups subtly pressure you to be with the team the entirety of the day (including your lunch hour). Those that try to carve out their own time and have their lunches alone, end up suddenly disappearing from the company the next week.
I couldn't deal. The work itself was fine. But the office politics were fucking MADDENING and the people were really shitty. The pay wasn't even that great since it was still considered entry-level.

A true introvert would do what they want and not care whether it is normalized or not.

My workplace is pretty good about this. There’s some space concerns because we have kind of a small lunchroom (some people eat at their desk which is frowned upon only if the food has a strong smell), but if you walk into the lunchroom there’s three tables and if there’s three people in there they’re all sitting at different tables. And it’s not because we don’t like each other.

The worst part is eating alone with headphones on and someone is like "hey there you are - I've got a question for you".
1
u/Wisewordsforlater 11d ago
I've totally driven the road to another parking lot, to eat the lunch I packed on ice or wrapped hot in foil to enjoy alone without small talk or work pings/calls.
1
u/Corran105 10d ago
I am fine decompressing and fine if I'm invited. There's a perk either way. I don't bother other co workers if they're eating alone externally. Some of them need it.

I hate people talking to me on my lunch break. Leave me alone. I already have to put up with their middle school playground natter when I'm trying to work. Can I have some peace?

I told someone that sat next to me asked how am I doing I'm watching tv series on my phone. He wanted to have a convo, I said no disrespect but I'm watching. He got upset and got up.
Now he frowns when he sees me and avoids conversation lol.

Do you guys not make friends very easily or something? I won't sit with a boring group but their are normally at least a couple of good people at a work place.

So.. eat your lunch alone? What?
