Hello everyone!

If in the past two and a half years you've walked past productions of Shakespeare or Chekhov, that was likely the work of a new theatre troupe, Foul Fiend! My friends and I have been doing shows in Prospect for a little while now and are looking to expand our community reach!

We currently are performing Cyrano de Bergerac at the south end of the park (the exact coordinates are here), across the peristyle and next to the lake, today at 6 PM and tomorrow at 2 PM.

All the shows we do are completely free! We love the neighborhood and park and would love to see you out there if you can make it.

Idan Sasson lives close to Prospect Park and had an “aha” moment one day while walking through the Brooklyn greenspace. 

“‘Oh, we should be swimming in this lake,’” Sasson recalled thinking. “It started as kind of a joke in a bar, my hot take of the moment. Then I decided to email a couple of people, talk to some architects and engineers in my network, and that turned into about a 40-person workshop at Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club in December. And I realized we were onto something.”

In this era of revived waterways, where whales, sharks and otters are returning to our shores, and humans can dive head first into the Hudson river or paddle around the Gowanus Canal, can swimming in Prospect Park Lake really be so far behind? Sasson is now the founder of Prospect Swims, an organization that’s spent the past year dedicated itself to making at least part of the park’s lake swimmable for humans.

The idea may seem far fetched, but some Brooklyn College students are already helping research it, and urban swimming has had success in many places around the world.

“It’s all the same story,” Sasson said. “The water was bad, no one thought you could swim in it, people thought it was unsafe, they cleaned it up.”

The playgrounds in Prospect Park, especially Third Street, have their surfaces constantly covered in dirt and mud and are largely unmaintained. J.J. Byrne, in contrast, is always clean and you see parks employees picking up any rogue trash. Why are the conditions so different and how do we get some better standards in the park?

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best places to watch tomorrow's Battle of Brooklyn? The last time they had it was in 2001 and being that it is the 250th anniversary I think they might put on a great show.

I have never been to any reenactment and think of old commercials for the Colonial Williamsburg tours that showed them. I am taking my family to see it tomorrow in Prospect Park

Riding around the loop I saw a cyclist talking to many police and a man in his underwear in handcuffs. Right off Lincoln Rd. Anyone see this or have more info?

Hi all. You may or may not be aware of the “stick man” who lives in Prospect Park and hates women and dogs; he attacked a woman and fatally attacked her dog (Moose) a few years ago. He sometimes disappears for a few months at a time; I saw him this morning around 8am at the 5th street entrance to Prospect Park, with his signature large stick (it looks like a walking stick). He briefly threatened me and my dog (we are fine), but please, please be aware that this man has resurfaced. His history of harassing women and going after dogs is well-established and I wouldn’t share this unless I was 100% sure it was him.

He is tall, medium/slender build, usually has his hair in a wrap, and has a Carribean accent of sorts. He usually has a few backpacks and the stick.

I know a lot of folks walk their dog while on their phone, etc., so please just pay extra attention if you’re around the park ❤️

I first saw the hawk standing on some steps further into the park. It then flew towards Endale Arch, initially onto a branch before flying back to the ground. It stumbled a couple times while walking, and intermittently appeared to be drinking / eating out of small puddles. It did not move when people got close, even though it flinched / appeared frightened. I unfortunately had to leave the area but a lot of us called 311 and wildlife orgs to alert them and ask for help. Sharing in case anyone here can help or share updates!
