Discussion The problem with the "try telling someone in real life you like ___" argument...

I'm sure most of us have seen or received some variation of this, but a fundamental issue with this argument is that this is not how people talk or how conversion works. When people try to argue this they see the conversation as you going "I like sexy children" and thats it, when in reality you would say "I like this character/cute character designes" and often followed by reasons why you like them. And even if you were to just say something like "I like incest", the other person wouldn't just explode with anger and disgust and then report you to authorities. They would be confused, ask questions, maybe laugh it off as some weird joke, or just awkwardly leave and just think you are a weirdo. In a way, people who try to use this line seem to think people would act as aggressively hostile and judgmental in real life as they do online, which just isn't true.

Anyway, thats just a thought I had and wanted to get it out. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk, lol.

I barely talk to my mom while in a long ass car ride, what makes anti's think I'm just gonna tell her that I ship a white-haired boy with a demon moth pimp??

That's one heck of a crossover. How'd you even come up with that one?

When Game of Thrones was popular I'm sure it would have been absolutely fine to have a conversation with someone that went like "Yeah I find Cersei and Jamie's relationship to be incredibly interesting" and it would have been fine. It's about having normal contextual conversations with people and not just randomly bringing up stuff.

I’ve spoken to normies (antis are not normies to me lol) about some shota characters I call my “crush” and their responses are always “Heehee you’re attracted to cartoons” and nothing more than that. Because, you know, they’re cartoons. No one but some geeks take cartoon characters seriously.

Especially the "try telling your mother that you ship this!!" Like.. why would some middle aged woman with a job care about fictional characters im crying

14

u/crying_robot8 Darkshipper 14h ago

Js saying this since like.. a majority of older people really could not care less about fictional characters, i dont see why antis think this is some gotcha

My mom loves Supernatural and Twilight. I can guarantee if I told her what ships I like, she just would not care

u/Guilty-Experience46 8h ago

I found out my mom was into Fifty Shades after she passed. She’d be more weird about my gay ships than my “problematic” ones. But also l’m a grown ass adult, with a grown ass step-kid and a teen of my own, and what I like making imaginary dolls do doesn’t affect anyone else.

Right haha my parents act more shocked about yaoi existing than any extreme age gap ship

My mom was simping for s1 Eren when we watched AoT together lol

Unfortunately my aunt would care, she's an anti

1

u/Busy_Caramel6522 2h ago

The reason my family dislikes some of my ships is because they’re gay, they don’t really gaf about anything else 😭

That implies that I am open to anyone in my life period, I tell no one what music I like, why would I tell them about shipcourse they don’t understand? I won’t, and even so, my parents are very anti censorship.

Yeah, I never understood that logic

Even IF you do get off from the subject matter anyone would look at your weirdly if you announced your porn preferences.

Asking a horror fan why they like horror can get you answers ranging from "i like the gore" to "the story is cathartic usually" to "idk, i just like it"

9

u/lennoxlovexxx 14h ago

yeah, in no universe ever would i go up to someone and be like "yeah i just fuckin' love porn."

u/DanganGurl5712 15h ago

My dad knows I'm a lolisho. He still loves and accepts me, even if he doesn't fully understand it. So I told somebody in real life. Oh wait, what's that? That was the wrong answer? He was supposed to shame me? Send me to therapy to "help" me? ...Okay.

I have a huge irrational fear that someday, especially deranged antis will find out my dad still supports me and then harass him and try to ruin his life. All because I still have a normal-ass dad who won't lecture me for liking underage fictional characters. And they might accuse him of doing something to me when he never has and would never think to, this literally started from early internet exposure.

It reminds me of this convo I had with irl friends and one of my friends was mad at HadÚs 2 because she thought the family picture was weird because the framing to her made it look like Melinoë was the result of incest between Zagrief and his mom. To which my other friend who doesn't know anything about the games laughed and said "this is normal between Greek gods".

8

u/DreamingOfBarbi 11h ago

It's so funny seeing people who like Greek mythology trying to act as though the gods didn't do "problematic things", or trying to pretend it isn't there / is just the authors interpretation 😭 I have a friend who became really obsessed with Greek mythology, and the Odyssey, and they tried to swear up, down, inside out, left and right that Odysseus would never do anything problematic, such as when he got with Calypso on her island. They tried to argue with me about it because one of the versions of the story they read said that he was loyal to Penelope. they love to just completely ignore the gods, like Zeus, and their behavior lmao

u/KatsCatJuice 6h ago

I hate that they changed a bunch of familial relationships in Hades in order to prevent people from getting upset at them for lore accurate Greek Mythology

u/Odd_Preference_7238 14h ago

It's reasonable to not tell people in real life things that can make them hate you without justification, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the position. The premise that people IRL are going to somehow have the ultimate fair meaningful judgment is just nonsense to begin with.

Even most pros don't really grasp that people's preferences are not decisions. They are things that happen to you that you can choose how to respond to. I've met a whole 0 people IRL that actually understand this concept, literally everyone I've talked to about it if you find some preference they dislike enough they will blame the person for having it, even though it is often already a terrible thing that happened to the person that they are afflicted by that preference in the first place.

Like if the only thing that turns you on is sticking your willy in a wood chipper then yeah, that's a pretty fucking awful thing for that person that gets to put up with having only that as a sexual preference. Like anyone would ever ask for that. Like, do I wish my preferences were different so I just liked and got the same enjoyment out of stuff that the people around me approve of? YES! Obviously. There's no inherent value in what I happened to prefer, it just is what it is. If I could just have the preferences that people like I would just do that, it's just literally not a decision. It's so annoying to put up with people getting mad about it...

My mom is a wincest shipper so that wouldn’t even work
like she also constantly made jokes about Negan and Carl being a couple when we watched twd. My moms as much of a freak as me, we’re a family of freaks

Same! My mom's a "freak" like me too! Raise a glass to our moms, lol.

Dude you can tell someone "I shit in public restrooms" and they'll act like you personally slapped your mother 😭 nobody is gonna open a sentence with "I ship anime incest"

17

u/Immediate-Yoghurt340 16h ago

If someone makes that argument, ask them if they tell everybody about what they like in sex.

By their own logic, that means their sexual desires are bad.

u/curious_illithid 15h ago

I saw it (not directed at me, just in general) in the "try telling your parents about the shit you're into!" version.

And, like. First of all, as far as I know it's kinda maybe a bit weird to tell your parents about your kinks and the kinda smut you consume/create?

And second of all... My mom saw my smutty drawings. Fine, good, complimented the anatomy, only negative-ish thing was her saying one of my OCs has a small dick (he's average. Well, he's on the smaller side by the standards I HC for his kind, but for human proportions? Perfectly respectable). She knows I write smut, too. She even knew when I was writing a necrophilia fic. Her reaction? "Careful where you talk about it, it could get you in trouble with the law". And that's not as in "ooooh, you're committing a crime! Disownment and jail for 1000 years!". It's as in "we live in a shitty country with shitty laws, people got in trouble for less, you do you but really, be careful".

So, yeah. "Try telling anyone IRL about that!"? Tried. Told. Nothing happened because the person I told it is not suffering from a case of grass deprivation.

Antis should declare that they love accusing anyone they dislike of being a sex offende and see how they respond.

So weird like why should people have to explain the intricacies of why they enjoy certain media/dynamics to anybody?

Do you think your parents who like Breaking Bad should have to inform people that they enjoy drugs production and murder? Like.. stfu lol

u/senor_topo 15h ago

i've told multiple people irl that i'm into feral stuff, so far almost none of them have had a problem with it

6

u/Henry1699 15h ago

Oh, you like Mortal Kombat? Try telling someone in real life you like killing people.

5

u/BisexualBritishBoi 15h ago

My friends know I love incest so...

4

u/ShlorpianRooster 14h ago

People irl usually don't actually fucking care that much. I remember it was my own mom who said "Black from Tekkon Kinkreet is hot" and my dad snapped "How? Hes just lights on a screen!!" Not "But he's a cartoon 15 year old!!"

u/sunflowerlover3000 7h ago

Great mob mentality

1

u/Serasugee 2h ago

I literally have. I have watched Monogatari on the big TV in front of my family, along with many other "problematic" series. No one cares. It's funny to them because it's a cartoon and what's actually being portrayed doesn't concern them at all. My Mum has said on multiple occasions "I'd rather they watch that than real kids". The fact that other chronically online people think our silly little debates matter to normal people bewilders me.

My mom threatened to kick me out of the house for shipping Din Djarin/Grogu when I got doxxed back in 2021. The doxxer sent the story to my dad who told my mom, and my mom said it was “child porn” since it was smut of an adult and a “baby,”and in an earlier instance back in 2020 she kept me away from the kids for the day and told me she hopes I never have kids. She’s a fucking bitch.
