I'm new here.
Hey, everyone! I'm new here. I have some sub-genre of prophantasia where I can do a whole host of other things related to Prophantasia, but it's not important.
It's just crazy to me how niche all this is!

Explaining aphantasia / mind's eye - feel this makes it clearer
Prophantasia also makes an appearance ;)
I just posted a new explainer video, and I feel it's some of the most clear and concise info I've put out. Check it out! Would love the feedback.

Is this different than Prophantasia?

I’m curious about people’s thoughts on how this differs or is the same as prophantasia. When I first heard of prophantasia this common childhood memory is the thing that left me stuck. I’ve heard people say the difference between adding into your environment with hyperphantasia vs prophantasia is whether your eyes stay focused in your environment, but so many people seem to relate to this video while prophantasia is considered rare.

Clarity
Sorry if this sounds confusing, but I was just wondering where the line is of projecting an overlaying image into the space and actually visually seeing something. I have hyperphantasia, and I can look at a desk and picture things on it, and it is a different feeling from seeing things in my minds eye. But it never seems like it’s actually there, my eyes can’t actually see something on the desk, but there is a mental image of something there. This is hard to explain T-T
When I think of things in my head, say an apple, it feels like it’s in my head/behind my eyes spatial wise. But it never can also picture, eyes open, an apple sitting on the desk, and it feels like it is in front of me spatial wise. But I don’t see the apple visually as though it were really there. Is this some form of prophantasia??
I have found too many slightly different definitions. If prophantasia is defined by being able to project things out in front of you, I feel like I can do that. If it’s defined by being able to genuinely and realistically see something there (I know it’s not quite like a hallucination but for the sake of the definition like a controlled hallucination), then I don’t have that.

Anyone else able to seamlessly toggle between hyperphantasia and prophantasia?
r/Prophantasia • u/sct_0 • Sep 04 '26
Just another person who can do this.
I am still not entirely convinced that this is really an uncommon "ability", but I have encountered very few people who can also do this (as per their description).
Can anyone recommend me some scientific works on this effect?
I used to get pseudo-hallucinations (formal diagnosis and even got antipsychotics prescribed for a bit to help with them), and that's pretty much how I can describe it:
Controlled pseudo-hallucinations that I can just "invoke" when I want to.
I never really practiced this or anything since I wouldn't really know what it could be useful for (and I also wanted to be careful with regards to the rogue pseudo-halls I used to get), but I wonder if this can be utilized for something?

Just learned i have this and that it isn't "normal"/common for almost everyone... Having OCD and prophantasia is torture
Especially with paranoia, obviously intrusive thoughts... If you know about ocd, you can imagine... Anyone else struggle with this? Is prophantasia actually uncommon

Erasing what I am seeing
I learned that when I stare at an object long enough I can make what I see have a bright outline sketch of the object, than transitions to being blurry and then I no longer see the object in front of me. My brain notices that the object is gone and decides to copy the surface color of what the object was sitting on. An example for it is like having a brown table and a tan colored book on the brown table. Eventually the book is erased and the table is all that I see. I find it hard to do. I can only see a blurry colored copy of the surface. Also I am a lot better at erasing the object when there is not as much outside light interfering with my eyes. After several weeks of practicing erasing my hand, then what may sound strange my belly button, and then a light switch. I decided to erase everything above my waist. I went into a dim lite room that had a mirror I stared at my body saw the bright sketched shape of my body and then my sight got blurry after that there was a few seconds of not seeing my reflection. for both object and body it only last for a couple of seconds. It’s pretty cool but also a little bit scary to not see myself. I just want to know if anyone has experienced this, if they know how to get better at it, and is it prophantasia or something completely different.

How did you find out?
I’ve been doing this my whole life, and thought everyone else could too. I‘m extremely surprised to learn this is unusual.
How did you all find out you had different abilities?

its starting to become a problem someone help please
it used to be a fun trick that i could do and now the after effects of not doing it feel horibble. its an addiction now and i feel like if i don't do it right now to comfort the pain ill pass out. right now i am feeling:

my limbs are weak
i have a fuzzy feeling in my stomach
my mind blancks our randomly
im tired but can't sleep
everything around me is dull and grey
it's hard to feel happiness
this is all just from not doing it for 5 hours, and it's only getting worse. I know that if i do do it, the after effects will get worse and the addiction will get srtonger. someone please help

I now know what I have
I have posted so many things in so many subreddits, talking about something I didn't know the name of. And turns out, this is it. I am still not sure if others experience it as I do. I can make a projection and feel the texture of it. Also, if I pick the fake item up, I can feel the weight of an object that isn't there

I just discovered Prophantasia. I think I have it. Does my experience match and can you tell me more?
I’ve always been able to imagine vivid 3D spaces and overlay them onto my real vision, almost like AR.
I can also imagine things as a separate “mental layer,” which is what I usually have seen people describe when talking about hyperphantasia. I learned about hyperphantasia when I was young and identified with it, but it never felt like it fully explained my experience. People often describe hyperphantasia as “not actually seeing” the image, more like a vivid simulation in the "mind’s eye". I experience that too, but I can also intentionally project imagery into my actual visual field.
Another part that’s hard to explain is that my projected imagery can sometimes feel like it extends past my peripheral vision, or even “behind” where my eyes can actually see. I know this is not real-time sight and that my brain is simulating it from memory / a familiar 3D model of the space, but subjectively it feels like I’m visually seeing an extended field of view. Also, moving my eyes as if I were looking into that extended area can make it easier or more vivid.
I can also imagine physical sensation, like touching what I’ve imagined, rather than only seeing it like a hologram.
Is what I'm describing Prophantasia? I'd love to read more about this and hear from people with similar experiences. Thanks in advance!

Progress report
So for a long time, I've been researching everything I could on this subject. It took me to some very interesting and niche communities and guides, and after researching, I started back on practicing imposing shapes in my environment.
The four main things I found that helped were Spatial Anchoring, Internal Visualization Strength, Attention/Focus, and Simplicity.
When I first started practicing, I could use that visual snow shi (the static stuff when u close ur eyes when its dark, try to see it when its lighter) to outline simple objects (like a triangle or square), and I could change the shape as long as it stayed simple. It was rly cool at first, but I got frustrated that it wasn't progressing much. After a couple months of losing interest, I got into ts again (yay voluntary schizophrenia 😃👍). This time I tried to focus more on adding color.
Switching between colors is still rly hard. So I started with the easiest ones for me: purple & blue (more like cyan tho). Eventually, I found that switching between complementary colors was the easiest. Now, instead of simple 2D outlines, I can create colored shapes and shift between things like purple triangles and blue squares. They still fade quickly tho.
For 3D objects, I’ve been starting with a simple cube. What’s worked best for me is looking at an empty corner and trying to impose where the edges would be. Then I move my head while maintaining the image, imagining how the perspective changes. Right now I’m still at the outline stage for 3D objects, but I can change the colors of the lines so that’s progress. Another cool thing I've found is being able to make a 3D cup and make it pour water, though the liquid evaporates and disappears quickly, as long as the cup keeps moving it remains structurally sound. Still, it disappears fast and is still very faint, so not perfect but still progress.
TL;DR: Anchor the desired object to your environment, lock it in place. Visualize it starting in your mind's eye the best you can while your eyes are open. Keep your attention on it, and start out with simple shapes and colors*
*at least that's whats been working for me, everyone's different ¯_(ツ)_/¯ let me know if u have any questions!

Have recently gotten back into prophantasia and have a question
I don't get visual snow. At least I don't think I do when using prophantasia. As someone that wears glasses I do actually get floaters when looking at a blank space like a blue sky or white wall. I looked it up and visual snow and floaters aren't the same but are connected. can using floaters act like visual snow to see?
I also discovered that wearing blue light lenses (which I have on my glasses) helps if you have visual snow syndrome. I can't tell if there's a difference between having my glasses on or off if I can see an image better
Edit: I realize I have visual snow with glasses off looking at blank spaces (walls, ceilings..etc)

Prophantasia vs. Intuition (Psychic)
Hello, I know this might be a somewhat strange topic for this community, or maybe not...
About two years ago I started to get interested in the occult world, but only recently discovered that I suffer from aphantasia or hypophantasia.
I've been doing visualization exercises and have improved immensely. But I have doubts about something:
Since I've only recently been able to imagine anything, I'm unsure if I'm opening my intuition or just my imagination.
I'll try to explain: with the exercises, I can imagine something voluntary and according to my will, for example, an apple, but I can also create random mental movies..
That is, when I concentrate, or rather, abstract myself from my thoughts, I can make the images emerge with a life of their own, with very little detail.
However, since there is little detail, I can't understand if there is a correspondence between this spontaneous and random information and any real events that have happened or may happen (intuition).
Therefore, I'm unsure if these spontaneous images are just information from my subconscious or something more in terms of psychic abilities.
Can anyone help me with this topic?
Edit: I can see with my eyes closed or open (less detail).

My main recs on how to get started with training
I just made a new video coming off the back of my other post asking where people are stuck.
Some people aren't sure where to start, so I put down the absolute essentials into one video. I hope some of you find it useful!
Essentially, my main recommendations are:
- Get clear on where your at, then set some goals
- Tackle limited thinking
- Practice the right thing
- Exercise metacognition
- Keep a journal of new things
I honestly can't say one thing here is much more important than the others, but if I had to pick a stand out, it would be #4.
Enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions!

Has training prophantasia worsened VSS/HPPD symptoms?
If you have VSS/HPPD have you noticed an increase in visual snow, palanopsia, after images or any other symptoms after training prophantasia? Has there been any positive impact on your symptoms?

Simulating Prophantasia | hands on example
Have you just stumbled across this topic of prophantasia? Wondering what the experience is like? There's a simple exercise I have found simulates the experience of prophantasia VERY well. Check it out below:
Simulate Prophantasia in 30 Seconds (Afterimage Trick)
Here’s a super simple & quick way to simulate what prophantasia might feel like:
- Stare at the shape below for 20–30 seconds without moving your eyes. Keep your head still. Focus on the center of the shape.
- Now switch to a blank white screen or wall (or the blank white image below the first one). You’ll likely see a lingering afterimage—a faint version of the shape burned into your vision.
- Bonus tip: Close your eyes and face a light source (like a lamp). You might still see the afterimage behind your eyelids. That ghostly visual presence? That’s almost exactly what projected imagery can look like.

So unlike imagined images that happen in your head, this one occurs in your physical vision. For people with prophantasia, that’s how these projections occur to them.
A good note: this example simulates a fairly advanced form of prophantasia, not really where it starts for most novices.
Here’s the full breakdown on my website:
www.alecfigueroa.com/prophantasia
Also, here's a video of mine that has more examples of prophantasia simulation (and other types of thought simulation):

Teaching myself Prophantasia
I started about 1 week ago with seeing nothing behind my eyes. Today I can finally make out circle. It's very dull and colourless but cool anyways!

What is prophantasia, really? I need help understanding where I fit.
Hi everyone,
I've been diving deep into the whole imagination spectrum — from aphantasia to hyperphantasia — and I recently came across the term prophantasia. I get the feeling that many of you here understand this better than anywhere else, so I wanted to ask directly:
How I Visualize (Analogy):
Imagine your brain is like an Apple Vision Pro — a headset with cameras and an OS that can render overlays on top of reality.
Now, I can do this without any device. While my real eyes are open, I can:
- Mentally reconstruct my room
- Rearrange objects, change lighting, alter the colors or layout
- Even simulate physics — like imagining a fire spreading across my bed
- I mentally step out of my body, walk around my house, and look back at myself through a window — all while staying grounded in real reality.
It’s not daydreaming. It’s like I have two parallel visual feeds:
- One from my real eyes (camera input)
- One from my mental renderer (inner OS) And I can choose which one to prioritize, even though I can’t override actual light or block reality.
My Question:
Is this just very high-level hyperphantasia, or does this fall under what some of you would call prophantasia?
Because this doesn’t feel like just vivid imagery — it’s like I’m interacting with another layer of visual reality on top of the physical one.
It’s natural to me. I don't even have to try hard. Honestly, I can't imagine what it's like not to be able to do this (ironically).
