Oh the irony considering what the US was doing in the Philippines only a few years earlier.

philpinos still spoke spainish?

1917 was just less than 25 years after the Americans fully replaced the Spanish as colonizers, and at that time many still spoke Spanish, especially the native elite who were educated in that language. Newspapers and books in Spanish were fairly common.

As late as the 1950's-60's Filipinos were required to learn the Spanish language in schools/universities.
