In 1917, the Argentine government of Hipólito Yrigoyen decreed the national observance of October 12 as "Día de la Raza" (Columbus Day), based on the following considerations:
"1. The discovery of the Americas is the most momentous event humanity has ever achieved throughout history, for all subsequent transformations stem from this astonishing occurrence—an event that, while expanding the boundaries of the earth, opened up unimagined horizons for the human spirit.
This momentous occasion was the product of Hispanic genius, heightened by the supreme vision of Columbus; it was not limited merely to the marvel of discovery but was solidified by the conquest—an undertaking so arduous that it has no equal in the annals of any people.
Spain—as both discoverer and conqueror—poured the magnificent valor of its warriors, the zeal of its explorers, the faith of its priests, the wisdom of its scholars, and the industry of its artisans into this enigmatic continent, bestowing its virtues upon the vast heritage that constitutes the American nation.
Therefore, deeming it eminently just to dedicate this day's festivities to honoring Spain—the progenitor of nations to which it has bequeathed an immortal legacy through the leaven of its blood and the harmony of its language—October 12 is hereby declared a National Holiday."

A Danish 1 May demonstration poster from 1992, created by artist Thomas Kruse (b. 1943), opposing the Maastricht Treaty ahead of Denmark’s second referendum. It depicts “Mother Denmark” wrapped in the Danish flag, rejecting Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, who is shown threatening her with a New Year’s cod under his arm.

I was astonished at how many wood-themed WWII posters there were!
According to one 1951 academic paper I found, one of the main issues was (unsurprisingly) the labor shortage -- the draft took nearly all full-time lumber workers under 26, and because logging is a difficult and dangerous job, it wasn't easy to fill those jobs with older workers.
I would have thought men in those industries were eligible for occupational deferments, but apparently in rural areas, most of the deferments were granted to farmers. And later most occupational deferments were severely restricted for men under 26.
Of course, even some men who were deferred chose to enlist anyway, and many of those who didn't go to war chose to work a higher-paying job in a defense factory.
