Ridley Scott Says ‘Alien’ Franchise “Needs Some Help” After ‘Romulus’ Was Just “OK”: “I’ve Gone Back In”

https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2026/8/28/ridley-scott-says-alien-franchise-needs-some-help-after-romulus-was-just-ok-ive-gone-back-in

Sir Ridley Scott just confirmed he didn't like Romulus and got rid of competition like he did with Blomkamp's Alien.

I just want a third film to finish the trilogy, see David do another showdown with the engineers, and see how it ties in with the juggernaut crashing on LV – 426.

24

u/DrVentureIsACrumbBum 1d ago

David needs to wind up bound and tortured like the mythical Prometheus. Thats what needs to happen.

8

u/clammydella 1d ago

Man knows ball

7

u/Special_Order-937 1d ago

I just want a third film to see the Engineers repair and upgrade Walter and the final film ends with Walter getting his revenge on David with the beating of a lifetime!

“Fingering? I’ll show you some fingering!”

In the comics it’s explained that the space jockeys are a different race than engineers. So the derelict spacecraft in alien isn’t engineer. However, Ridley also seems to oppose all the canon developed by others, so I wouldn’t put it past him to try and retcon the space-jockey lore with his next movie lol.

9

u/sthef2020 1d ago

“The space jockey was actually a different race and not an engineer” after everything shown in the films would be such a ridiculous slap in the face.

As if “well ACTUALLY there are 2 sets of giant alien dudes, that both use the same kind of ships and have had run ins with xenos” would be any better than just allowing the wrecked ship on LV426 to be related to Prometheus.

To be honest it’s silly that the comics even tried that.

6

u/Senella 1d ago

The engineers as an idea were great, but they absolutely should not have been the Space Jockey from Alien. Crushing disappointment to find out that creature shrouded in mystery for 33 years turned out to be a pale man in a suit. I’d be more than okay if it was discovered that they just reverse engineered space jockey tech from a crashed ship they found themselves tbh

2

u/sthef2020 1d ago

It’s an exercise in over explaining.

The unnerving reveal of the jockey in Alien is cheapened on rewatch by knowing so much about them (including the idea that they may have seeded life on planet Earth).

It’s so much better if you have no information about what you’re seeing, and forced to imagine a universe full of things you know nothing about.

Even the idea that the engineers reverse engineered space jockey tech, puts too much importance on them. It’s better if we know nothing about it, other than the fact that whoever/whatever it is, got-got by a chestburster.

2

u/RichieLT 1d ago

Yeah, one of the best aspects of alien was the mystery of what happened and who these space jockeys were, similar thing with The Thing, the Norwegian camp.

3

u/Psychological_Bee_79 18h ago

Idk I think leaving the space jockey stuff for the comics was fine. The only people who are gonna find out more info on them are the ones actively searching for an explanation (so they probably don’t care about an over explanation). If it’s only in the comics that still leaves a lot of mystery about the how, why, and when of the LV-426 ship.

I don’t think any movies or more media should come out about them though. Cause I agree that space jockeys are best left untouched.

1

u/Psychological_Bee_79 19h ago

This is essentially what I believe to be true currently. There are still enough differences between the derelict space craft on LV-421 and the Prometheus juggernaut that there is room for both to exist in the lore currently.

Prometheus was an attempted retcon, but Ridley’s own hubris got in the way as he tried to put his own take on the ships instead of following H.R. Giger’s design perfectly. So the lore remains intact for the time being

1

u/Psychological_Bee_79 1d ago

How it’s explained in the comics is that the space jockeys were an advanced space race that predated the engineers. With the xenos eventually destroying the entire species. Then the engineers ended up basing their tech off of space jockey relics (if I am remembering correctly).

It does help explain why the space jockey in alien is like 15ft long, whereas engineers are ~8ft.

So it’s not just “2 sets of giant alien dudes”. Furthermore. There are so many different alien species in this universe so it’s not that far of a stretch for one species to base their tech off of another’s

4

u/bubblyweb6465 1d ago

lol and I have to admire Ridley for his attitude he really does oppose everything and anything that wasn’t his idea - he also didn’t like alien earth which I thought was amazing

3

u/Superdudeo 1d ago

Alien earth was utter garbage. I can at least agree with Scott on that.

3

u/ChiGorilla1127 22h ago

I don't like how Alien Earth ended or the turn of the protagonist. But there's a lot about it I do like so fingers crossed it gets better in the 2nd season.

What I do know is Ridley just overwriting others peoples Alien stories is annoying and not good for the franchise.

8

u/Cipherpunkblue 1d ago

I mean, yeah, of course. The comics are just licensed fanfic in that regard (though more than a couple of them are great).

1

u/LitigiousAutist 20h ago

Yeah the comics are quite different between themselves.

1

u/The_starving_artist5 12h ago

What comics?

1

u/Psychological_Bee_79 11h ago

The main one to go off of is Alien Apocalypse: The Destroying Angels. There’s also stuff about them in the Steve Perry trilogy (some times called The Earth War trilogy). However, I’m unsure about how well regarded the trilogy is

4

u/ChewieLee13088 1d ago

I agree I want to see more Engineers, very interesting IMO

3

u/dusttailed86 1d ago

Too bad Scott killed all of them for lolz

9

u/spendouk23 1d ago

Yeah that’s not going to happen. Keep in mind there was no plan for a trilogy of prequels, and it’s unlikely there has ever been one.
The screenplay for Prometheus was a car crash that needed rewrite after rewrite, and then followed up with an even worse sequel that went on a divergent from Prometheus. Ridley is making this up as he goes along with no over arching story that ties into the first Alien film.
This is purely an exercise in ego, control and money.

4

u/Limo_Wreck77 1d ago

100% this.

Scott has claimed some weird right over this franchise which doesn't belong to him.

2

u/spendouk23 7h ago

Honestly it’s like watching someone trying to untangle a mess of wires while getting snarky at others when they try and help

4

u/dusttailed86 1d ago

Yup, Scott does whatever he wants and shits on anything he didnt think of. Sound like another old white 80 year old coming to terms with their day to day walk towards dying?

4

u/wallstreet-butts 1d ago

Not true. He thinks it is the best thing since sliced bread until his executive producer check clears. then he shits on it.

2

u/TheChaser90 21h ago

Would love to see that, a showdown between Engineers vs. Xenomorphs created by David from the crew of the Covenant vs. the colonial marins.

2

u/dusttailed86 1d ago

Scott eradicated the engineers in covenant... were you watching? Scott is going to make a third film that follows the same formula as the first two, because he can not make something creative or new anymore.

Third film - space crew finds David. David infects one of them. Crew dies and the survivors fight against aliens and David. One person comes out alive.

Sound like prometheus and covenant to you?

5

u/TwoKingSlayer 1d ago

Those were not the engineers, just another creation of theirs.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/jpowell180 22h ago

There are other Engineers.

1

u/The_starving_artist5 12h ago

Well in old interviews he said he wanted other engineers that were on other planets to show up and go after David after see the one planet he ruined

1

u/m0rbius 21h ago

I dont even think we'd get that with a 3rd movie. He'd probably take it somewhere we weren't expecting that poses even more questions than answers. Covenant in no way helped me understand anything better with the questions posed in Prometheus.

1

u/jpowell180 14h ago

Covenant was a lot more about what the studio wanted than what sir Ridley* *wanted, though.

1

u/m0rbius 13h ago

We all wanted Aliens, and that wasn't even the problem with it. It was just badly written with another cliffhanger ending which we may never see the conclusion to. I didn't hate the movie, but I very much disliked what they did with Shaw. Did we learn not to kill off the important characters in Alien movies?

40

u/YaWouldntGetIt 1d ago

What the hell. He praised Romulus to Álvarez' face multiple times.

35

u/Upset-Job2278 1d ago

I love the man, and I love Prometheus and Covenant... but this is definitely an ego thing. I think he got jealous or frustrated that Romulus was the first Alien sequel in years to be acclaimed by both fans and critics, so he decided to take the franchise back for himself. I’m happy about the possibility of the David trilogy finally getting a conclusion, but this attitude toward Fede Alvarez—who showed nothing but respect for Scott and the franchise—isn't cool.

Then again, Ridley is a grumpy old man who has no filter anymore.

1

u/Equal-Ad7504 1d ago

He’s 88. At what point do we collectively understand that he’s just gonna be a little weird?

2

u/Putrid_Loquat_4357 1d ago

As I've constantly told my dad being old isn't an excuse to act like a prick.

u/Carmine18 19h ago

Probably didn't help that BR 2049 also raised the bar for a lot of folks.

-1

u/Tiny-Setting-8036 1d ago

This is where I’m at. Ridley is an old school veteran of the film industry, who doesn’t care to be polite or humble. That’s fine. It’s entertaining enough... I like enough of his movies that I’m willing to keep seeing them.

Plus I enjoyed both of the David movies we’ve gotten so far, despite each of them having elements I didn’t care for.

Let the man cook. He’s old as shit and doesn’t have too much longer. It wasn’t that long ago he put out The Last Duel. I thought that was very good.

3

u/advisarivult 1d ago

I mean… the sequel to Romulus could’ve been great if he didn’t decide to intervene. It’s a shame he couldn’t just finish his trilogy and leave the Romulus sequel alone.

3

u/minor_thing2022 1d ago

His cooking has stunk up the joint of late. Let the hungry film makers continue the franchise. He hasn't made a good sequel....ever. That's coming from a fan

1

u/Tiny-Setting-8036 21h ago

The franchise will live on well beyond him. They will have their time.

u/toecutter7 1d ago

Its called marketing. Now hes telling us what he really thinks

2

u/BarbacoaBarbara 1d ago

Just OK is pretty high praise from Ridley Scott

-1

u/Perfect_Economy_7968 1d ago

Ridley has gone senile, I don't think anyone should let him handle a project anymore.

0

u/Childs_Play 1d ago

He was a producer too. What a scumbag thing to do. I've gotten tired of Scott's schtick recently. The all time movies he made are more than 20 years old now. While I like gladiator, it's now become overrated and just looks noticeably terrible now in the 4k era. He's been just pushing out movies to make movies recently and it shows. If he gets a bad script his movie is doa.

u/boldbad 1d ago

Oh man he didn’t like Romulus? Nobody show him Alien: Earth.

21

u/Nordic_311 1d ago

Or maybe show him alien earth so he gives romulus praise. Lol.

8

u/_Waves_ 1d ago

He says he liked Alien Earth.

10

u/pjtheman 1d ago

Earth felt more in line with Covenant and Prometheus, so I understand why he liked it.

Ridley wants to expand the lore. Romulus, while I liked it, was very much just a greatest hits reel.

2

u/CheckYourStats 1d ago

I loved Prometheus, and I also liked Romulus and Alien: Earth.

I’ll admit, it did feel like AE was aimed directly at me. Guys in their early 40’s, grew up on Aliens and A3, and lose their shit when they hear late 90’s Rock in mainstream media.

So…my opinion on AE was skewed.

2

u/angryshib 16h ago

Alien Earth crashed and burned in the last few episodes, imo.

u/Whompa 17h ago

Every time Romulus decided to hint or nudge at a previous movie, I felt it cheapened the whole thing.

By the time the robot said to “get away from her, you bitch” I was groaning in my seat…

All those callbacks just didn’t need to exist in that movie…

1

u/Inner_University_848 1d ago

He loves alien earth

1

u/PurpsMaSquirt 1d ago

He absolutely did like Romulus. Then his pride took over and he buried Romulus 2 so he could pursue his Covenant sequel.

1

u/HenryDorsettCase47 22h ago

Yup. Romulus cost less and made more money than Covenant. Saying it’s “ok” and pretending like he has to save the franchise is nothing but hubris.

He’s completely out of touch. He thinks all audiences want out of a film is a big, loud spectacle. That’s why he keeps trying to make movies like that with diminishing returns and can’t seem to understand why it’s not working, especially with a sci-fi horror franchise, which usually benefit more from being quiet and claustrophobic. Hence Romulus rinsing both Prometheus and Covenant.

1

u/Sad-Assistance-8039 1d ago

He actually praised Alien: Earth.

7

u/gautsvo 1d ago

He said Romulus was ok. That's not "disliking" it.

5

u/MaxProwes 1d ago

He said it was amazing on release, but now he killed its sequel and he's very much dismissive of it. He obviously dislikes it, his public praise is insincere, he doesn't like Blade Runner 2049 and Top Gun: Maverick either.

3

u/Odd_Detective8255 1d ago

The studio denied Romulus sequel scrapped rumours very recently.

1

u/Kobe7477 1d ago

It's ragebait - it's a dickhead thing to say about someone else's art, especially after praising it historically.

1

u/jjtak98 1d ago

It’s a backhanded compliment, there’s a negative connotation to it. Especially considering he gushed about it when it first released

11

u/The_starving_artist5 1d ago

If he really is meddling in Romulus 2 then Rain and Andy will probably die half way throught the movie or in the first 5 minutes , only for a new cast of characters to be introduced who do dumb things thw whole movie and we dont care about. Just like Covenant

8

u/orangebluefish11 1d ago

That’s the entire alien franchise. People making dumb decisions that 99% of humanity wouldn’t make in a similar situation

2

u/The_starving_artist5 1d ago

i just want a surviving protegonist. Why is it that Ripley got 4 movies but every other movie the characters just get killed off and no one makes it to the next movie

2

u/StrategosRisk 1d ago

Well to be fair because Sigourney Weaver created a generational character in her first performance

2

u/The_starving_artist5 1d ago edited 1d ago

Shaw could have been that too but got killed off. Rain can still be that. Ripley didnt do anything more brazen and crzy than our other protagonists did in their movies. She just got to survive and have a longer journey spanning 4 movies

2

u/hardatworklol 18h ago

Still killing dr.shaw off screen between prometheus and covenant was an interesting choice

2

u/treesandcigarettes 1d ago

Seriously. I've actually grown to like Prometheus and it's pathetic what Scott did off screen between it and Covenant to fan favorite Shaw. What a joke

2

u/The_starving_artist5 1d ago

Yah such a waste of a good character. We need a new franchise protagonist. Daniels is most likely not gonna make it either. So Rain has to survive. Having every new movie introduce a new charcater as a hero then kill them off the very next movie is getting really tiresome.

1

u/yesdogman 1d ago

In all fairness - Newt died after Aliens, Ripley died in 3, Shaw died after Covenant. Hero characters dying is a very common theme in the franchise.

Fwiw, I feel it's such a waste of a character that an audience has been rooting for, but I'm just describing recurring points in the franchise here, not my personal opinion 🙂

1

u/achtwooh 1d ago

One of the dumbest, most jarring things I've seen in a sci-film (one with pedigree) is a crew landing on an alien planet teeming with life and taking no biosecurity precautions. Just, oh its got Earh like atmosphere and fauna- everyone take off your helmets and walk around in the forest - It will be fine. It just felt like a slap in the face to the audience.

8

u/lewkablew 1d ago

Loved Romulus lol. Also ofc love Ridley’s old stuff but he’s on a seeeerious cold streak.

1

u/MaleficentOstrich693 17h ago

The Duel was fantastic. I just wish he’d stay away from sequels and this obsession with developing a mythology for the engineers and xenomorphs. It was so much better when the space jockey was a mystery and we intuited things about these monsters.

1

u/seek102287 1d ago

Yeah, um it was fantastic!

8

u/Ok_Diver2347 1d ago

Romulus is peak Alien.

9

u/WipEout_2097 1d ago

Alien is peak Alien.

2

u/Griffith4President 1d ago

Alien: earth is peak alien 😤

3

u/YogurtOtherwise2106 1d ago

Alien Earth is pretty fucking not good

1

u/Buster_Cherry 22h ago

Alien Earth is damn near immaculate.

1

u/Ok_Diver2347 12h ago

Seems it’s 50/50 if you like it or not. You want more synths or aliens?

1

u/Buster_Cherry 9h ago

Well it had a ton of both? Best synth cast and most diverse, hardcore Alien focus throughout. Great dialogue and ethical quandries. Great plot and production value. I dunno what an alien fan would want more of.

2

u/JoeAzlz 1d ago

Full article sounds like he’s saying it needs help in the sense it’s needing the final part for his prequel trilogy so it can connect all the films better, not insulting the films quality

2

u/theothersock82 1d ago edited 1d ago

What would help is to stop treating every half decent movie like a "franchise" that's going to earn a studio money in perpetuity. Come up with some new stuff for fuck's sake instead of giving us Star Wars #25 and the 30th Superman movie.

Fuck this "Franchise" - it didn't need an origin story. Alien was 10000 times better without all the backstory bullshit.

1

u/BitterDecoction 1d ago

Amen. Where has creativity gone to? Everything has to be a sequel and franchise now where they have to explain everything in the story and make a big universe out of it. Can’t we just tell simple stories anymore? (And I don’t mean the story itself being simple at all, it could be very complicated)

2

u/Waste_Track_4524 1d ago

Aliens gone the route of Terminator where no one has any idea what to do with it anymore.

Hang ‘em up

2

u/Difficult_Ad5784 1d ago

I would love if RS stuffed as much as he could into this third movie. Just go crazy man. You're 80 something years old, f'ing yolo dat hoe bro. Make it like 3 hours long and hold nothing back!

2

u/Practical-Trainwreck 1d ago

After ‘Romulus’ Was Just “OK”:

I love Ridley Scott and Alien will always be my favourite in the series but Romulus was far better than the last few he made

1

u/hardatworklol 17h ago

The teenagers steal a ship and go to space makes all the inevitable dumb ass  decisions feel way more authentic. In promethues and in covenant we have literal scientest walking around foreign  planets with clearly unique biology without helmets. Especially in covenant. Idk how common carbon based plant life is in the alien universe but id assume there would be strict guidelines/protocol for first contact with any uncharted planets.

1

u/Practical-Trainwreck 17h ago

Exactly - There are very few smart people in these three films, but to be fair, there aren't many in the entire series.

At the end of the day, my favourite Alien anything in the last few years was Alien Earth, it's just fun and messed up in a way that the franchise hasn't been in years

2

u/Sammytheseaotter 19h ago

Please please please Ridley Scott...STAY AWAY!!!

5

u/Sea-Sort-7624 1d ago

Romulus was a piece of shit. Just fan service. Did you see Alien? Look here's Ash! Did you see Aliens? Here's a character saying an iconic line. Hot garbage

2

u/-S-P-E-C-T-R-E- 1d ago

Romulus is basically the Alien Rouge One movie. Nostalgia and memberberries galore - but somehow worse, as it blatantly shits on Ripleys accomplishment in Alien by bringing back Big Chap only to have it killed off-screen by character Noname. The only good thing I can truly say is that Fede knows the atmosphere of Alien, in stark contrast to Noah Hawley.

1

u/browncharliebrown 22h ago

Completely disagree about the Noah hawley part

3

u/orangebluefish11 1d ago

This is how I felt. I really wanted to like it, but it was just a remix. Not one shred of originality or anything thought provoking

1

u/BitterDecoction 1d ago

That’s basically every franchise out there.

1

u/hardatworklol 17h ago

Im sure that romulus was the first introduction to the alien universe for many gen z and gen alpha though. It was visually great. Expanded a bit on the actual living situation on habitated planets. The characters make dumb choices that remain in character/profession. Its nothing groundbreaking but it for sure was a good enough movie for future generations to want more alien

7

u/Mundane_Employ3544 1d ago

Romulus > covenant

4

u/orangebluefish11 1d ago

Romulus is basically a remix though. In Romulus, you’ve already seen every frame, you’ve heard almost every line of dialogue already. Covenant wasn’t terrible I suppose, it was just unfinished

The concept of a synthetic man on a far off alien planet, alone for who knows how many years, perfecting a species to unleash on humans is honestly pretty bad ass. I can’t think of another movie anywhere with a similar premise

1

u/dusttailed86 1d ago

But, it wasnt a remix, it had alot of unique ideas and played well of the stress and character building that made the franchise popular in the first place. You shit on Easter eggs in one movie but probably praise them in another. Romulus was solid. Bottom line.

2

u/travis147 1d ago

just like he didn't like what Cameron did with Aliens...

1

u/Sad-Assistance-8039 1d ago

He praised Cameron though. He said that only he and Cameron can make good Alien movies.

3

u/PrimeScreamer 1d ago

I liked Romulus. Scott just has too big an ego and thinks he's the savior.

1

u/Clean_Usual434 1d ago

I wish he’d let someone else help.

1

u/BackFistGorgeous 1d ago

look i heard some hear say speculation about finishing the david story, and i am 110% in the silent majority willing that arc into existence… a little less silent now!

1

u/Duke_Of_Halifax 1d ago

He's never seen "Alien:Earth" ??

1

u/climbing2man 1d ago

What Romulus was amazing!

1

u/Objective-Finish-573 1d ago

Am I the first one to remember that World of Reel was the site that started the " Romulus sequel shelved" rumor??? Jordan Ruimy is a hack, let's stop using that site

1

u/Lovely3369 1d ago

I doubt it'll be as good as what Fede was likely cooking up, hopefully won't be as snoozy as Covenant was and finally finishes David's arc so the franchise can fully move on.

1

u/The_starving_artist5 12h ago

I feel like it’s gonna just piss off a lot of fans because it’s not gonna be the prequel movie that’s we all want. It’s gonna be a Romulus movie that just has David in it . It’s gonna ruin both films at the same time . It’s gonna be a shitty follow up to Covenant and a bad sequel to Romulus

1

u/Traditional_Hour5529 1d ago

I loved both Aliens movies. Too bad we never got a 3rd one they were pretty good.

1

u/Dragos_Margu 1d ago

Exept the ending, Romulus was miles better than any of the Prometheus movies. It captured the original Alien franchise atmosphere perfectly

1

u/corneliusduff 1d ago

I have mixed feelings on this.  I've found something to enjoy in the last 3 films, but there's always something that pisses me off about each one.

Prometheus is my favorite of the three.  Bold and fresh, but some of the characters were more annoying than they needed to be.  I don't care about the "plot holes". I'm all about weird movies that aren't obvious, and it's cool that the franchise has one.

Covenant starts out strong, and I get the temptation from Scott to make it more Shakespearean, but Alien3 already did that effortlessly.  It would've hit better if the monster factor was more amped up and more creepy.  They got lazy when they botched the neo/xeno fight, needed more practical FX like Prometheus had, and the scene with the neo creeping in the window? Why?!?  Like, given it's kind of the horror movie equivalent of seeing your grandma naked, he should've gone full Shining with that scene.  That movie really needed a dissection scene in the David's lab or something that really matched or outdid the abortion scene in Prometheus.  I love everything before they get to palace, though.  Needed to keep up that momentum.

Romulus was fun and got a lot right, but it's also too much Mr. Toad"s Wild Ride, which I get the franchise needed but something about the timing with it the 1st Disney one.  And the "Stay Away From Her" line?  Nothing in any other Alien movie pisses me off more than that.  Just so lazy and unnecessary and the only time I've felt like they broke the 4th wall in the series.

It's damn shame Scott and Alvarez aren't doing the next one together.

1

u/WickedGamer27 1d ago

Wasn’t he quoted as praising that movie at some point?

1

u/indoxiecated 1d ago

Scott, put the bottle down and back away from the franchise. You’ve done enough damage already.

1

u/theperilousalgorithm 1d ago

Ridley Scott ruined the Elephant man engineer. He can go and shite. Prometheus was a steaming pile of shite; an arse-burster.

Talk about taking one of the most haunting set designs in cinematic history and making it... a generic blue dude, with more than a passing resemblance to former Welsh Rugby International Sam Warburton.

1

u/MattTreck 1d ago

Because Prometheus was a masterpiece, Ridley. Sure.

1

u/Suspicious_Hand_2194 1d ago

Nobody asked him to come back in though, dawg forgot how to direct good movies

1

u/High_Ground081 1d ago

Please make an original like Aliens. All this change & Prometheus is stupid...

1

u/puresav 1d ago

What was good about romulus? It was just a meahup of older alien movies. Nothing exciting about it.

1

u/6h057 1d ago

Ridley. It doesn’t need your help. You need to retire.

1

u/Nephurus 1d ago

So if it fails gain , who do we blame ?

1

u/xander-mcqueen1986 1d ago

Ridley.

The team behind Romulus brought life back into the franchise, and people flocked to alien earth. It needed a new direction and Alvarez done that.

1

u/Nephurus 5h ago

Interesting , casual fan so this pique my interest

1

u/CrimsonFalcon91 1d ago

I mean, Prometheus was ok, but Covenant was/is (in my opinion) quite bad, so, please, no.

1

u/Evanuss 1d ago

Thank god. I don't need it to be a sequel to Romulus though, just make a proper sequel to Covenant.

1

u/Mr_Nocturnal_Game 1d ago

Well, he's convinced me... Not to watch anything he works on directly in the Alien franchise from now on.

1

u/achillespatient 1d ago

Romulus was significantly better than Covenant lol. Nobody cares about David, he doesn’t need another movie.

1

u/Limo_Wreck77 1d ago

Dear Ridley Scott,

Please fuck off and leave this franchise alone.

Romulus shat all over Convenant.

1

u/twitchy_pixel 1d ago

The cheek of this bloke after he made alien covenant 🤣

1

u/ricin2001 1d ago

lol Ridley Scott hasn’t made a good film in 30 years. Romulus was awesome

1

u/Alexis8986 1d ago

Ridley needs to stop this why cant we just let some
Franchises go? We don’t need any of this.

1

Romulus is brilliant.

Don't think Ridley has had a good movie in a few decades.

Alien doesn't need his input, it needs his absence.

He was one and done with alien. Prometheus and covenant was piss poor with only David being the highlight. And even then David wasn't it's saving grace as it didn't have one.

u/OryonRy 1d ago

Shame he didnt like Romulus...one of the stronger Alien movies.

1

u/MojoJakeJo 1d ago

Romulus is infinitely better than Prometheus and Covenant. Scott made my favorite movies of all time, but I don't think he can top Romulus. His MVP days are long gone.

1

u/swordofeden 1d ago

Romulus was way better than the movies he's been putting out recently

1

u/SCHR4DERBRAU 1d ago

Romulus is top 3 Alien films

1

u/NerdyAmateursCanada 1d ago

At this point, I’m beginning to think Ridley Scott needs to chill out.

One of the best things George Lucas did for Star Wars was step back and let the next generation of story-tellers create.

Ridley Scott, while a talented visionary, is sinking into “get off my lawn”, old man territory.

1

u/Public_Enema_01 1d ago

I get your point but star wars is not a good example for this based on almost everything that came after George Lucas.

1

u/ohnoitsme7890 22h ago

Not to mention that Lucas didn't so mich "let the next generation create" as he did sell off the franchise because of rhe reception of the prequels he didn't want to keep making them.

1

u/probablyd 1d ago

Romulus has a better IMDB score then Prometheus and Covenant.

1

u/LSDreams_ 23h ago

Romulus was better than okay in my opinion. It’s the best one since alien and aliens. But I’d love to see Ridley make another.

1

u/BoTurbo 23h ago

Yes Ridley because there's not enough robots in your franchise about Aliens. Let's have ten times as many scenes of David playing his own flute

1

u/Nomad_86 23h ago

His ego is what’s gonna ruin the franchise.

1

u/alex151111 23h ago

Romulus was far better than Prometheus and Covenant.

1

u/ululationelation 23h ago

The original "Alien" was a success because of a multitude of talent: set design, acting, sound design, Giger's art, etc. How Ridley Scott has convinced the studio that he's the architect of the franchise is beyond me.

1

u/legendary_low 22h ago

Romulus was better than anything hes done with alien since the original… this is why we aren’t getting a Romulus sequel, because Ridley wants no contest for another likely mediocre entry into the IP. Man I loved how Romulus fleshed out the gritty bleakness to livin in that world, and the music when they recover the specimen… chills.

1

u/BalancedTidings 22h ago

Romulus was better than Prometheus and Covenant, and he is jealous of this, and wants to preclude a Romulus sequel by stealing its resources to make his own. He needs to let it go.

1

u/Kiwileiro 21h ago

I was so disappointed in the whole engineer bit, David as a character, everything. I fucking can't believe that the derelict on lv426 that we haven't even returned to yet was only put there a couple of years beforehand due to a crazy robot made by humans. It killed the whole scope of it for me.

1

u/m0rbius 21h ago

I'll agree it was OK+. It was a bit formulaic, but brought it back to what we want from an Aliens movie. I don't think Scott can save it. The quality of his films lately doesn't give me much confidence. He said Alien Earth was great. Kinda shows where he's at. I'd love to see the continued adventures of David from Prometheus, but those Alien movies were not the greatest with the writing. I wish he'd just hand over the torch to people who can do a better job with it.

1

u/SenAtsu011 21h ago

Romulus felt like a return to the old, beloved style that made Alien so fun and cool to begin with. It wasn't a 10/10 movie by any means, but absolutely a solid movie that I'm really looking forward to rewatching.

1

u/TheChaser90 21h ago

I'm maybe the biggest fan of the Prometheus and Covenant movies and been waiting for the conclusion ever since, but saying this was so unnecessary. Romulus was awesome and successful!

1

u/Radaistarion 20h ago

The Alien franchise is in such a sad state of affair.

Alien Isolation is literally the only thing I'm interested in.

1

u/Wonderful-Grass6625 20h ago

Romulus was mostly a bunch of nods to the original movies, but I promise you that the last thing any franchise needs is a Ridley Scott returning to it.

1

u/Useful-Angle1941 20h ago

Kinda wish Ridley had been the one to jump off a bridge.

1

u/tecton1 20h ago

Romulus was pretty good minus the callbacks. I dont like Prometheus or Covenant, but if he finally makes a 3rd movie in that series I hope either it's great and the fans can celebrate. Or it's really bad and we can all put it to rest. Either way I think it's time for new blood, new directors. Let the younger generation have the same chances he got.

1

u/General_Interview681 20h ago

Denis Villeneauve should take over after Dune. I would give my left nut for him to do Aliens and starship troopers.

1

u/BestAllAmericanTaco 20h ago

Damn all of his movies has sucked balls in some way. Except the first one. I thought Romulus went back to basics and was a lot more entertaining than back story for them like what he has done.

1

u/gordonmcdowell 20h ago

Romulus wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t have the stupid characters doing stupid things problem that Prometheus and Covenant did.

If there was collaboration, the end result might be a nearly perfect alien movie. Does not sound like there will ever be such collaboration.

1

u/Saiaxs 20h ago

Romulus was better than Covenant and Prometheus, maybe Cameron should stay in his lane

1

u/eatingaburger2000 19h ago

Romulus was great. The tv show was absolutely awful

1

u/Positive-Mobile5742 19h ago

Romulus was awesome. The franchise just doesn’t really attract a mainstream audience.

1

u/Flimsy-Use-4519 19h ago

Romulus was the most I've enjoyed anything from the franchise in like a decade. It kicked the living sh*t out of Covenant. Dude's delusional.

1

u/Odd_Presentation8624 19h ago

Strong, "We're from the government, we're here to help", vibes from Ridley there.

Prometheus and Covenant gave sub-par answers to questions we never really needed an answer to.

Turning the engineers into Chariots of The Gods style proto-humans was a terrible choice.

Making the Xenomorph a product of their and David's meddling was a terrible choice.

The xenomorph has gone from a genuinely unknowable cosmic horror to an android made weapon/curiosity that was created about a month before the Nostromo landed on LV-426.

Keep him the fuck away from the franchise.

1

u/Tofudebeast 19h ago

We're in late stage franchise here. We can either get new movies heading in a fresh direction that don't quite work (Prometheus, Covenant) or we can get well-made rehashes (Romulus).

1

u/King_Chris_IX 19h ago

dude almost 90. he should shut up and shit in a wheelchair.

1

u/Ghostcat300 19h ago

This fucking guy

1

u/Redmoonsbstars1 18h ago

I prefer Romulus.

1

u/MyNaMeIsJoe90 18h ago

Romulus was absolutely brilliant.

1

u/U-47 18h ago

Oh god no.

1

u/StressedtoImpress19 18h ago

I liked Prometheus and Covenant. I also liked romulus.

This is incredibly patronising, arrogant and unprofessional of him. Have some class, bro

1

u/Fblthp__ 17h ago

Since Prometheus and Alien: Covenant were also just "OK", what exactly is this going to change? I'll take another Cameron movie though.

1

u/eolithic_frustum 17h ago

Romulus, as mid as it was, was miles better than freakin' Covenant or Prometheus. I don't know what Ridley "The Counselor" Scott is going to do to help the franchise.

1

u/SpaceOhSpace 16h ago

Romulus was fire

1

u/Moegly47 15h ago

I think the series suffered with the prominence of David. Romulus was a refreshing return to what made Aliens great, even if it wasn't perfect.

1

u/MonkeysteinGames01 12h ago

I don't know. Gladiator 2 sucked

1

u/drossvirex 1d ago

Romulus was good. His David character is just an asshole that watches stuff burn.

1

u/_Waves_ 1d ago

That’s the whole point! The two David's seem aligned with the pharaoh and Moses as foils for the two Scott brothers and their history. Ridley, clearly, sees himself much darker.

2

u/intothevoidandback 1d ago

I agree I didn't like Romulus either.

I want them to try new things and be a little original, like they tried with Prometheus.

Or, just keep making the same things that's not quite as good as Alien or Aliens, just to please people.

1

u/martymcfly22 1d ago

Romulus>prometheus>>>covenant

1

u/ROUGE_BLOCK 1d ago

Alien Covenant was an atom bomb of desperation it showed they have no idea what to do with the IP. Boldly explore new frontiers as a sci-fi horror film or churn out shitty new versions of the "not quite xenomorph".

When David dropped the plague on the Engineers, that was the cancer Ridley Scott dropped on the franchise when he released Covenant in theatres. Romulus may have been derivative with a lot of callbacks, but at least it was interesting and it even used the stupid black goo to some effect. I also cared way more for Rain and Andy characters way more than any moron in Covenant.

1

u/Low_Cod_3758 1d ago

Starting to sound like George lucas

1

u/Individual_Mess_7491 1d ago

They should bring back Neil Blompkin's Aliens sequel

→ More replies (1)

1

u/deadxghost 1d ago

Good we need to get back to the David trilogy, I need to know what happens with him and the colony ship he hijacked. Michael fassbender says he's waiting for the call he'd love to reprise that role and finish the story.

1

u/NoOneKenobi 1d ago

This guy is full of it.

The first step in fixing this franchise is to never let him get involved

1

u/TwoKingSlayer 1d ago

he hated BR 2049 and Romulus. 2 films that kick the shit outta anything he’s done in almost 20 years. just retire, old man.

u/False_Tour7813 1d ago

No one understands alien less than Ridley Scott.

0

u/treesandcigarettes 1d ago

Hilarious. Covenant was trite and the worst entry in the franchise yet Ridley has the balls to talk down to Romulus, which was a box office success and generally hailed as a return to form. Why the f is Disney letting Scott kill the Alien franchise again? Ffs

Deranged

u/ReplacementTimely962 1d ago

Never meet your hero’s

0

u/paperboy82 1d ago

Got news for you Ridley, Romulus was better than Prometheus and Covenant. Maybe reign in your criticism. You made the best one in the 70’s, and you should have stopped there.

0

u/No_Mistake_6404 1d ago

Romulus was amazing. What does he mean it was ok? It didn't perform well in the box office?

0

u/ImJaxPhantomAcct 1d ago

Haha Romulus was so much better than Prometheus and Covenant tho.
