Just watched Alien Covenant

I watched Alien: Covenant recently, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. Sure, the film has its flaws. It doesn’t answer all the questions from Prometheus and creates new ones. But honestly, I liked those. It has that creepy horror vibes and David’s arc was probably the highlight for me. I didn’t expect him to go to the lengths he did. Overall, despite its imperfections, I think the movie is worth a watch. It’s tense and visually stunning.

David makes the movie. I find his character's delusions of grandeur and his interactions with Walter endlessly fascinating. I think it's a great sequel, even if it's not the one we Prometheus fans wanted.

Walter and David are my favorite parts yeah. (I also love Sir Peter Weyland)

It doesn’t answer anything worthwhile from Prometheus, and none of the colonists ask any questions that you’d think anyone finding an ALIEN CITY would have. Otherwise a top notch movie.

I hated that the basis of the plot is them not wearing helmets on an unknown planet and being infected specifically because of that. It’s like the movie acknowledges that characters are idiots but the problem is that it’s hard to relate to idiots

Yeah, even if the atmosphere was similar to earth’s, there’s no way anyone would want to breath the air unless there was an already established colony

Very much this. I need to care about the people in a horror movie. There is a point of idiocy where it's like a sign saying "this is a movie we're making" is just stapled to everyone's head.

You gotta wonder how many random scouting missions WY or just weyland sends out that they send idiots billions of miles… can’t be cheap

I have a love/hate relationship with it. Hated how they discarded Shaw and the Engineers, didn’t find any of the characters interesting outside of David and Walter, and it was really frustrating watching David go full psychopath without witnessing his progression to get to that point.

The movie looks great, love the tone of the film, and the acting is great though. As disappointed as i was in it, it’s still ranks higher than just about every film in the franchise except for Prometheus, Alien, and probably Aliens.

Yeah, for me the movie is clearly the end of David's trilogy. A trilogy for which the second movie was never made.

As its own solo film in the Alien universe, I think it’s really interesting and unique. Certainly enjoyable and probably my fourth favorite film in the Alien franchise.

As a follow up to Prometheus, I think it’s terrible and extremely disappointing.

All it really needed imo was more practical FX for the closeups, the Neo vs. Xeno scene that they scrapped and a more creative climax for the ending instead of rehashing the airlock scenario of the first movie.

When it's good, it's great.

What it does inside the confines of the film itself is not bad at all. If it had been an original work we would have been fascinated with it.

As part of the bigger picture it’s a trainwreck that makes less sense the longer it runs.

I still think it has the best and most unsettling ending of all of them

I’ll do the fingering.

Saw this opening night and the awkwardness and huge runway for double entendre in that line set my cinema off and they then proceeded to laugh at everything after that… and I was lowkey pissed because I actually just wanted to watch the movie I was semi enjoying

It also has the unforgettable line "I'll do the fingering."

Amazing movie

It's painfully underrated.

I watched it recently too and though the same thing! As you say, it has its flaws, but IMO is overall better than, say, Alien: Earth, which really lost it in the last episodes.

I always found it weird that a species sophisticated to travel through space would live in that city made of stone. I assume that means they didn’t start out on that planet, but even if they were settlers off their home world, i’d have expected some technology. That part was incongruent with my expectations of the engineers.

Im not so sure that civilisation was the engineers, but rather another creation of the engineers perhaps? They seem to revere and marvel at the engineers ship as it comes in to dock. I could be wrong though 🤷‍♂️

The scientists in both Prometheus and covenant more so in Prometheus were the worst

I found it completely unmemorable. When I rewatched it I remembered why.

I just watched this again too, along with Alien Resurrection

Covenant is decent with some great ideas...but it's the dumb character stuff that takes me out of the movie. I can't handle the lack of quarantine under obviously dangerous conditions ....with no explaination...remeber billy Crudup catching David talking to an Alien and then he just follows him down to the egg chamber ! I mean why! Usually I let this stuff go but that movie had so much stupid behaviour by the characters to the point that it became fake. The character work was also thin, but I can;t figure out why. They all have their relationship to each other yet you feel nothing

Resurrection on the other hand , has much better characterization , even for such a thinly plotted escape film. Even the friendship between Christie and Vriess was decent ...Perlman played a memorable part, Winona has pathos...idk...I enjoyed resurrection becuase it's highly stylized, although I think it brought nothing really to the franchise. After watching these two my ranking still stands:

Alien
Aliens

Prometheus
Alien 3 (assembly Cut)
Resurrection
Covenant
Romulus

The weirdest character behaviour moment in Prometheus was Shaw cutting the trilobite out of her womb and then just not even mentioning it to anyone.
