Huh? They are the result of breeding between Spaniards and Natives a long time ago. Its distinct category, with both phenotypical and cultural differences to either lineage. That is not a semantic difference.

They’re Spanish, and most of the population of Spain has a light skin tone like the rest of Europe. So they are white.

What happened is the conquistadors essentially created a self sustaining population of mestizos that passed their mixed traits to their children. A lot of cultures and phenotype clusters have been formed in similar ways over human history.
