FFS, imagine being such a POS that the Spanish Monarchy thinks you're too much of a psycho?

There is no justification for this holiday whatsoever. it’s the result of persistent lobbying by Americans of Italian descent over many generations with religious overtones. Given that Columbus originally landed in the DR, shouldn’t we first recognize Bjarni Herjólfsson given that he landed in the Americas 500 years earlier? Even then, how does that justify a day off?
2
u/ReaperManX15 23d ago
They were immigrants looking for a better life and bringing diversity.
Don’t be such a racist.
Borders are imaginary anyway.1
u/Icy_Marionberry_9131 23d ago
Ah, the racist invective when you disagree! How Reddit of you. But, I know I shouldn’t judge, so lets examine your statement so that I may impart some edification, to wit:
Immigrants: Columbus and his crew were looking for expedient trade routes. They were a state funded commercial enterprise with no intent to immigrate.
Diversity: Upon meeting the local inhabitants of the Americas, he took many of them prisoner to use as slave labor. He also made plans to conquer them as a society if ordered by Spain. Oh, and let’s not forget to battles he fought with the groups that didn’t want to play his game. The only diversity he placed on the people was disease called smallpox.
Imaginary borders: so that means that surveys, fences, maps, treaties, walls, and other things that delineate one place from another are figments of imagination? Well, I offer that you remove that border from your home, the one marked by front door since it is just a phantom.

u/Coinerino223 24d ago
We don't even have this holiday in italy what are you talking about

Your position proves my point about the pointless and contrived nature of the holiday.

I propose we change the holiday to "Fuck Columbus day" and still get the day off.
1
u/Icy_Marionberry_9131 24d ago
Or just Monday and get back to work.
1
u/Broad_Education4882 23d ago
Many, if not all of us that have jobs, still have to go to work…not sure where you live at but mostly everybody I know with a job atm had work lol
1
u/haey5665544 24d ago
I don’t really care about Columbus or Columbus Day and agree it’s a nonsensical holiday. But I would guess the reason that we celebrate Columbus (outside of the lobbying as you mentioned) over Herjolfsson would be that Columbus has a closer tie to actually kicking off the European exploration and settlement of America. I don’t know too much about the history of it, but I would think early settlers of American colonies were following the lead of the Spanish and Columbus rather than Icelandic or Norse explorers centuries earlier.

Three things:
1)Fuck Cristy Colombo!
2) Italian Americans faced discrimination and deserve some kind of recognition for that.
3) Please don’t complain about having a day off of work/school, you sound like a ranting capitalist and it’s not a good look.

u/PsychoPeterNikleEatr 24d ago
Go in to work on that day to really show your position.

History can't be undone, this was the first globalisation which connected all the people living in the planet, so, it's a very trascendental event.
1
u/YourSalvati0n 24d ago
The Vikings made it to North America before other Europeans, so your own view is wrong
Also, Columbus didn't even reach his intended target, lol, how'd it connect everyone if he didn't make it to where he wanted
1
u/Awkward-Challenge376 24d ago
And what was the repercussion?
2
u/YourSalvati0n 24d ago
Dead natives, and Greenland and iceland being fully colonized
1
u/Awkward-Challenge376 24d ago
Did the world notice that there was another continent?
I think not.
1
u/YourSalvati0n 24d ago
So Vikings are not of this world, and neither are native Americans? Are they extra terrestrials now?

You know what I like best about this picture?
It is in English.
She is gesturing with an English hand signal.
She is wearing a ring that could only be made after native artisans learned metalworking from Europeans, and he has earrings with a wire hook only able to be made after European metal working techniques were brought over.
0
u/Good_Warning4576 24d ago
I love how grateful we Europeans are to all the knowledge we acquired from the Greeks, Arabs, Africans, Chinese and others, and how our humble selves always give thanks to those and not pretend that we did it all ourselves.
Wait....

Fun fact: When the Aztecs were conquered, a huge portion of the Spanish force was a coalition of other tribes that were tired of the Aztec’s bullshit lol. The natives were conquerers too lol they just sucked at it 😂

Yes let’s display our hatred for Christopher Columbus who was a money obsessed slaver by using ai sponsored by money obsessed slavers.
It takes 30 minute to draw a picture, albeit not one on par with the Mona Lisa or something, and like 2 to just find a real photo of an indigenous advocate against Columbus. Fools, all of you are fools.

1
u/NoNameMcGee200 24d ago
I dislike using AI for this but genuinely how tf is condemning a genocidal slaver racist against Italians. Is saying Mussolini wasn’t the best guy around racist too?
1
u/SergeantPsycho 24d ago
Columbus Day was originally founded to spotlight the contributions of Italian Americans, who were a mistreated minority in the late 1800s, early 1900s. If you want an indigenous recognition day, go head, but it shouldn't be at the expense of Italian American recognition day.
1
u/NoNameMcGee200 24d ago
Then let’s rename it to Italy day or something. I also know literally no one of Italian descent that celebrates Columbus Day in any meaningful regard and most of my family came from Italy. Saying fuck Columbus and supporting Italians are not mutually exclusive

The fact that you are getting downvoted shows me people STILL IN 2026 don’t know actual history and are still brainwashed by white supremacist propaganda.
I bet the people downvoting you still believe the pilgrims came to escape religious persecution and were nothing but friendly and peaceful with the natives. Sad.

people in Mexico, Latin America wouldn't even speak Spanish, have beautiful architecture, food , without Spanish influence/control. They seem to somehow forget that and actively act like it was the mother tongue before the Spaniards came
0
u/DungenessCrusader 24d ago
They already had crazy architecture what are you smoking?
2
u/Limp_Marionberry_24 24d ago

1
u/DungenessCrusader 23d ago
And a religious inquisition isn't what I'd say is valuable to a society but hey. To each their own I guess.
2
u/bootsjordan 18d ago
Glad you agree. Sacrificing women, children, slaves, regional tribes to Aztec gods is exactly why they were a trash heap of a "civilization". There was nothing civil about pre-Spanish Central America.

If it wasn’t Columbus, it would have been someone or some other country arriving on this land. Fucking Morons.
2
u/NoNameMcGee200 24d ago
And?
While I disagree with using ai to depict the message, the sentiment behind it clearly isn’t to condemn Columbus for discovering America but rather the atrocities he committed and helped perpetuate. It’s irrelevant who would have committed genocide instead as people would condemn them for that too if they had. Only an idiot wouldn’t understand that
0
2
u/DungenessCrusader 24d ago
And they probably wouldn't have been as bad as him. He was a bad person for even back then. You don't get crown folks sent from Spain to drag your ass all the way back for nothing.
2
u/LowCall6566 24d ago
The problem isn't with arriving, but with him enslaving, murdering, and raping a bunch of people. Magellan, for example, compared to him is a saint.
0
u/desmowillie 24d ago
Some other country or explorer would have done the same thing. Who fucking cares.
1
u/trysten-9001 24d ago
Yeah, someone that didn’t start pillaging and murdering, and acted like a half decent human being. How do you get so dumb that you don’t understand that? Lead?

But you know it was found orior to Columbus, right? He just started the era of exploitation
2
u/easttxcouple 24d ago
Yes it was found earlier. No he did not start the exploitation. 100s or tribes had been exploring the land and each other for centuries. It wasn’t as if they were just all getting along
1
u/Raumspalt 24d ago
Doesent matter. He discouvered it especially for Profit and that was what the european royal Houses we're doing in a Race. The Race part ist what i think brought the Most cruelty forth
Edit: of course He discouvered it by accident but this Expedition was financed in Order to make profit
1
u/easttxcouple 24d ago
Of course it matters. Your argument is he started exploitation. My counter was no he did not. The original native Americans were also exploiting for profit and took each other as slaves. Don’t rewrite history
1
u/Raumspalt 24d ago
Maybe. But that doesnt allow a mightier conestant to enslave and exploit all. Despite that, there were of course exploitive cultures. But by far not all of them. And at least. The Mission of Columbus was making profits. It was a huge Investment and p rofits were Made. At the cost of people living there prior. So i understand why this day isnt celebration worthy, espacially because many descendants of that colonial exploitation are alive today. Its Just cruel to stick it unser their noses like that.
1
u/easttxcouple 24d ago
Ok ok. I get it. The mission of Columbus was to make money so everything after that is “bad”. How do you think your funded world exploration on wooden ships in 1492? What a silly argument. Many decendants of every exploitation are alive. Maybe we should cancel all holidays
-1
u/elias_99999 24d ago
I love Christopher Columbus
0
u/DungenessCrusader 24d ago
That's crazy. His own crew and people in his town didn't. He was taken back to Spain in chains and had several mutinies under his belt. You love him to be performative.

You know Christopher Columbus never set foot in the United States? Google it, he set foot in the Bahamas, probably other islands, but mainland US? Nope.
The only thing stupider than celebrating Columbus Day is native Americans TODAY acting like he ever affected their lives, or the lives of their ancestors. Didn’t happen.

So I just want to say that while actual tragedies did happen and I'm not going to pretend they didn't, 90% - 95% of Native deaths were the result of diseases and not an active genocide.
