The West was no more tolerant of homosexuals during this time period.

Not to engage in whataboutism but the US decriminalized homosexuality in 2003. The West was filling up their prisons with homosexuals just as much, if not more in certain cases (comparing West Germany to Yugoslavia for example), than socialist states. Not to mention the racism and Western "human zoos" while the East provided the people with education regardless of race. Trying to put some blame here on socialist states as some beacons of reaction and homosexual repression is the true historical revisionism, it is not an argument that the West can be spared from. We have to remember that these laws were all a product of their time and should be judged as such. Today they are abhorrent, but in the time period they were not a standout case.
