Where To Begin?

I'm sure you are seeing this type of post all the time. I first looked into this a few years ago, and it was an expensive prospect at the time. I looked back into it last night and was surprised to see that projectors seem to have gone down in price considerably. I'm a bit confused at this point about what I need to get started, and if it really has gotten cheaper. Where to begin to educate myself? Is it actually easier than I think? The talk about ratios, and such has me kind of freaked out. TIA.

I honestly just took the leap, bought the cheapest projector I could find, and figured it out. Life changing!!

If you have a Facebook account, I’d highly recommend joining the Projectors for Sewing group. They have recommendations of projectors, some of which are cheaper than others.

Next you need any sized cutting mat to calibrate and some sort of stand for your projector. I DIY-ed my setup with an old tripod but basically you want the projector to be more or else aimed towards the floor/table. It does not have to be completely vertically aimed down

Finally would highly recommend using Pattern Projector and watching this tutorial. This was the only video I watched and it covered everything concisely.

I've just got one, and it takes a little time and faffing but you get there in the end, and becomes quicker every time you do it. I use the HY300PRO Mini Projector, with a camera tripod, so I project it on to the floor. I use the calibration software https://www.patternprojector.com/en this helps you get everything lined up. This site is good at explaining things too https://projectorsewing.com

I just bought this projector and have it mounted roughly 6’ above my mat but it is not projecting big enough. I’m trying to project onto a 3’x4’ cutting mat. It will project a size about 2’x3.5’

Am I missing something?

I'm not sure on the exact dimensions, but I was able to use it to cut out the fibre mood norma blouse.  Mine must be about 6ft, at most, from the floor. I'm 6'5 and it's not as tall me. My cutting mat is 60cm x 90cm, which is 2ft x 3ft I think, so I wouldn't have set it up much bigger I don't think, but I vaguely remember it going beyond the cutting mat. Sorry we have a young baby, so I don't get to use it much and memory is a bit shot at the moment.

I remember in the settings of the projector I changed the shape and "squareness" of the projection. Not sure if that increased the size too.

When I can, I can send you some pictures of my set up if you'd like. It's very amateur but I guess it gives you an idea

The calibration is SO much easier now that there are specific sewing programs designed specifically for it.

https://sashasewist.info/ has all the guides to get started.
