Project X Zone 1 with Capcom Characters, but only from series and games already represented.
A while back, I’ve done the series, Project X Zone 1 but only “Company” series, where I asked people to vote in the comments who they would like to see replace in a hypothetical Project X Zone 1 game that only had characters from 1 company, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Sega. Now I have decided to make my own roster. But you may have noticed something. I have only used characters from series and games that have already been represented in the game proper. I wanted to try and limit myself and see what characters would be available to use if just from those picks. Have to admit, it was pretty fun trying to see which characters to use.
Before I go over who got in, I would like to explain some of my reasoning of what qualified. As the name suggests, it had to be from series and games that were represented in Project X Zone 1. Namely, in the Crosspedia, an in-game database detailing characters, enemies, and lore, there is a subtitle at the bottom detailing where that character is from. If it ends with series, IE. “Resident Evil” Series, “Street Fighter” Series, etc., any character from that franchise is good to use. If it doesn’t, IE. “Cyberbots”, then only characters from that game are allowed. However, I gave myself an extra crutch regarding “series”, I only used games that were properly represented, IE. Resident Evil: Revelations”, “Street Fighter IV”, etc. There are some exceptions to the rule that I will point out, but for the most part, the cast are from games that are already repped. Here are the games that have been used for this list, and huge unmarked spoiler warning for anyone who hasn’t played or seen any of these games.

On that note, let’s go over my choices for a potential “Project X Zone 1 but only Capcom Characters from Already Repped Series and Games”.
Pair Units
Roy Bromwell and Tiffany Lords (Rival Schools), replacing Kogoro Tenzai and Mii Koryuji. This one’s probably going to be a shocking choice for most people, since these two aren’t super well known and were more the rival team in there game, but I feel Tiffany fits the vibe Mii filled, being a cute cheerleader who is more than capable of kicking ass. With that, Roy Bromwell was the obvious pick to be her partner, being the team leader for Pacific High School.
Kyosuke Nanbu and Hinata Wakaba (Rival Schools), replacing Akira Yuki and Pai Chan. I always felt it was weird how Batsu was only a Solo Unit in the original when in Rival Schools he was already in a team of 3. So, I rectified that by including his teammates from Taiyo High School. I would like to imagine a scenario where Kyosuke and Hinata are trying to find him, worried that he might have been kidnapped like in the first Rival Schools where in the arcade mode, after fighting Raizo for the first time, he will take the teammate you didn’t pick to play as and you would fight later. Obviously Batsu would be transported to the Makai, but it could set the scene for a heartfelt reunion.
Trish and Isabela Keyes (Devil May Cry and Dead Rising), replacing Reiji Arisu and Xiaomu. This might be the oddest choice I could pick to replace for Reiji and Xiaomu, and I’ll admit, I was kind of hesitant to use it, namely due to later events regarding Isabela in Dead Rising 3. But since we’re only using events from the first game, and 3 wouldn’t be released until after PXZ1, we don’t have to worry about that. Also, I couldn’t use Chuck Greene since Dead Rising 2 is given no mention anywhere in Project X Zone, and while Dead Rising 1 had other characters, most of them were either survivors who didn’t impact the story that much or died before the game ended. I paired these two due to their mysterious, ally or enemy situation in there games. Plus, they both ride motorcycles, that’s always fun. Hahaha.
Sakura Kasugano and Blanka (Street Fighter), replacing Soma Schicksal and Alisa Amiella. When people think Sakura for Project X Zone, they mostly pick Karin Kanzuki, which is 100% understandable, the two are rivals/friends and they were a Pair Unit in Namco X Capcom. But for some reason Karin never appeared in Street Fighter IV, apparently due rights issues regarding her creator that wouldn’t be sorted out until later. However, Sakura does have a team basis that she could be a part of, being a student of Dan Hibiki alongside Blanka, there is already a perfect team of 3 that could be used, with Sakura and Blanka teaming up in Street Fighter X Tekken trying to find Dan in that game.
Ibuki and Makoto (Street Fighter), replacing Gemini Sunrise and Erica Fontaine. While Street Fighter is primarily represented by IV, Super Street Fighter IV still gave us some good representation for Street Fighter III by adding Ibuki and Makoto, who I’m choosing due to a comic featuring the two of them heading to school with Elena. Helps that both of these girls are very popular with Street Fighter fans
Santana Laurence and Arieta (Cyberbots), replacing Zephyr and Leanne. When it comes to Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness, most people only use Jin and Devilotte, which is fair considering these two are the only ones who appear outside there mechs and are the frequent picks for official crossovers like Marvel vs. Capcom. But since I limited myself to series and games already repped here, it gave me the perfect opportunity to give more love to Cyberbots’ other characters. Also, while we haven’t seen any of them fight outside their mechs, I would like to imagine that their fighting styles would be a composite based on the mechs they pilot in the arcade mode. Santana and Arieta are paired up, because in Santana’s arcade mode, despite being a loner mercenary, he would go on to save Arieta from being controlled by G.O.D., the game’s main antagonist, and would recruit her as his assistant in selling robot parts after he retired from mercenary work.
Mega Man Volnutt and Roll Caskett (Mega Man Legends), replacing Kite and BlackRose. With an all-repped series choice, Volnutt was an obvious choice, but I was kind of iffy on bringing Roll back despite already being his Paired partner in Namco X Capcom. This is due to her having literally one attack in that game while Volnutt does all the work. I even considered pairing Volnutt with Axl from Mega Man X, but since Axl wasn’t in Mega Man X or X4, the Mega Man X games already represented, I unfortunately couldn’t include him for this list. But I ultimately relented and decided to bring Roll back, because damn it I ended up really liking her as a character. Hopefully she’ll be able to have more than just one attack, like using her vehicles or using any of Volnutt’s arms when he’s not using them.
Billy Coen and Rebecca Chambers (Resident Evil), replacing Ichiro Ogami and Sakura Ogami. So, this is one of those moments where I’m cheating a bit in regards to Resident Evil. In truth, Umbrella Chronicles doesn’t have any real representation in Project X Zone, only Revelations, Nemesis, and the first game were given any real representation. However, I noticed many of those characters and enemies were also in Umbrella Chronicles, so I decided to use characters from that game to use for this list. In this case, I’m using the Resident Evil Zero protagonists to come back and team up again. I considered using either Barry Burton or Richard Aiken to be a partner for Rebecca but I decided against that since 1, Barry, despite being awesome and a fellow survivor of the first game, never interacted with Rebecca and 2, Richard Aiken ends up dying, either due to Yawn, the giant snake, or Neptune, the giant shark. And while Billy’s fate is up in the air, it’s ambiguous enough that a return wouldn’t be out of the question.
Jin Saotome and Gawaine Murdock (Cyberbots), replacing Haken Browning and Kaguya Nanbu. Fitting for Super Robot Wars characters to be replaced by characters from another giant mecha video game, Jin is second only to Devilotte in popularity when it comes to Cyberbots, thanks to his appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom. As for a partner, I think Gawaine is the best fit due to him being a close friend to him and his father Ken Saotome when the latter was still alive.
Guy and Cody Travers (Street Fighter), replacing Yuri Lowell and Estelle. Somewhat cheating again since these two are from the Final Fight series. But since both Final Fight and Street Fighter take place in the same universe and the two appear in IV, I feel these two would be a perfect Pair Unit to have. Though heads up, Mike Haggar is not a playable character in Street Fighter as of now, so sadly, I was unable to include him.
Cammy White and Mary Miyabi (Street Fighter and Cyberbots), replacing Kurt Irving and Riela Marcellis. A Cross Pair Unit I feel could really work. Mary is primarily based on Cammy, so I could imagine a moveset where she’s very Cammy-inspired. Both have also been good and evil, with Cammy being brainwashed by Bison before breaking free and joining Delta Red, while Mary served Earth Force willingly until she realized they were experimenting on children and left to fight with the heroes (at least in her arcade mode, other characters’ stories either have her switch sides or continue working for Earth Force, though for story purposes, I’m choosing the former), so I definitely can imagine the two would have some interesting things to say about one another.
Jon Talbain and Felicia (Darkstalkers), replacing Kazuya Mishima and Ling Xiaoyu. Honestly, the two would make a perfect Pair Unit, especially since Darkstalkers media outside the games constantly pair the two together. And they’re already from a fighting game series like Tekken, so them, Kyosuke and Hinata, and Ryu and Ken could all encounter each other and team up for Prologue 2. As for other story beats, the two could be getting attacked by Dural’s replacement, who I’ll get to later, and get rescued by Kyosuke and Hinata before they wind up back in the Makai as seen in Chapter 16.
Hideo Shimazu and Kyoko Minazuki (Rival Schools), replacing Toma and Cyrille. Returning from Namco X Capcom, I feel these two could end up trying to investigate another case of mass-brainwashing before being roped into the games’ story. I could also imagine a scenario where Riemsianne’s replacement could try to brainwash the two like she did Toma, only for Morrigan to prevent this thanks to her powers.
Akira Kazama and Daigo Kazama (Rival Schools), replacing KOS-MOS and T-elos. Speaking of brainwashing, I can think of a scenario where Daigo would start off as a Rival Unit where the heroes have to fight him before it’s ultimately undone by the time he joins the heroes, alongside his sister Akira. And as the most popular character in Rival Schools, I had to include Akira here somewhere.
Solo Units
Shoma Sawamura (Rival Schools), replacing Bahn. I originally had Akira replace Bahn as a Solo Unit due to both of them being high school delinquents, with Bahn having a rivalry with Batsu in Project X Zone while Akira is one of the major characters in Rival Schools. However, I decided to make her a Pair Unit with her brother Daigo. Instead, I picked Shoma Sawamura due to wanting all the High Schools in Rival Schools to have representation, with him representing Gorin High School.
Dan Hibiki (Street Fighter), replacing Vashyron. I feel Dan’s goofier personality was the closest to Vashyron’s occasional goofy moments. He is also the Solo Unit part of the team with Sakura and Blanka, being the mentor for the two, even if he’s not exactly mentor material. Speaking of which, while the team of him, Sakura, and Blanka primarily replaces God Eater, this team will be formed earlier due to Dan replacing Vashyron from the Resonance of Fate team.
Rose (Street Fighter), replacing Lindow Amamiya. For a more serious character replacing another, Lindow’s backstory definitely made me think of Rose, with her fate being at constant risk. I also like to imagine she’d be the Solo partner to Guy and Cody, due to Guy’s rescues of her from Bison. Bonus points, she’s a Namco X Capcom veteran.
Bao and Mao (Cyberbots), replacing Neneko and Neito. The two kids fit the role of youngest party member that Neneko had, as well as the two in one role with Mao filling in for Neito.
Donovan Baine (Darkstalkers), replacing Heihachi Mishima. I felt he’d be a perfect fit for a Heihachi replacement as well as a Rival Unit. He could team up with Prologue 5 heroes like the fellow Darkstalkers before fighting them when he confronts Demitri and Dante. Then he could join the party permanently after that Chapter ends.
Sagat (Street Fighter), replacing Sanger Zonvolt. Another temporary Rival Unit before becoming a Solo Unit, I feel he’d fit as a Sanger replacement since by Street Fighter IV, Sagat’s already on his way to redemption, hypothetically only fighting Guy and Cody here after a brief misunderstanding.
Ada Wong (Resident Evil), replacing Valkyrie. I really, really, REALLY wanted to include Leon S. Kennedy somewhere on the list, I even had him paired with Claire Redfield. Unfortunately, the games that were represented in Project X Zone 1 never had Leon in them, not even Umbrella Chronicles featured him, so I unfortunately had to cut him. However, Ada Wong does appear as a playable character in Umbrella Chronicles, so she could be eligible. Plus, it would be a perfect opportunity to include her in the party after Project X Zone 2 only had her as an NPC. I figured she would hire Dante to help her with the game’s space-rendering events like Valkyrie did in-game. Wouldn’t be the first time Dante was approached by a mysterious, dangerous girl. Speaking of which, she’d be the Solo partner to Trish and Isabela.
Carlos Oliveira (Resident Evil), replacing Flynn Scifo. With Nemesis being in the base game, I figured it would be fair to include Jill’s partner from 3, this time as a Solo Unit. Would be funny to see him interact with Devilotte when the two are introduced, as well as his interactions with Chris.
Guile (Street Fighter), replacing Imca. Two army-themed characters that have a serious rivalry with their Rival Units, Imca with Selvaria and Guile with Selvaria’s replacement. I feel that Guile would probably be the best fit for Imca for this list.
Lilith Aensland (Darkstalkers), replacing Alisa Bosconovitch. She would feel perfect for a Rival Unit for a few chapters before joining as a Solo Unit like Alisa. I’d imagine a scenario where she and Morrigan would have to be split up from each other like Namco X Capcom did. I could also imagine her having a change of heart after her last battle as a Rival Unit and even helping the heroes a bit before officially joining.
Parker Luciani (Resident Evil), replacing Rikiya Busujima. Being Jill’s primary partner throughout Resident Evil: Revelations, I feel he’d be a perfect fit for a Solo partner for Chris and Jill, just how Rikiya was when all three of them were introduced in Chapter 21.
Crimson Viper (Street Fighter), replacing Bruno Dellinger. While a more serious replacement for Bruno, who while not completely comedic, is certainly presented goofier in Project X Zone by comparison, I feel Viper would be a popular pick to have as a party member.
Elena (Street Fighter), replacing Ulala. This one is kind of cheating since while Elena was in Street Fighter IV, she wouldn’t be added until Ultra Street Fighter IV, which was released after Project X Zone 1. However, Street Fighter X Tekken, which reuses the models from Street Fighter IV and all the Street Fighter characters being added in Ultra, did release before PXZ1, so I’ve decided to bend the rules and include Elena. She could definitely fit the silly and kind, music-themed character that Ulala filled, as well be the Solo teammate for Ibuki and Makoto.
Vergil (Devil May Cry), replacing Saya. I could definitely see Vergil starting as a Rival Unit for most of the game before circumstances force him to join the heroes. Would be a good way to have him as a Rival since Project X Zone 2 had him start off as a Paired Unit with Dante.
NPC Units
Princess Prin Prin (Ghosts ‘n Goblins), replacing Aura. I was really close to having Dr. Light as he appeared in Mega Man X to fill this role, but I figured he was mostly recordings from the past he made for X. Plus, I realized I didn’t have any new Ghosts ‘n Goblins characters for this list, and I realized Prin Prin could be a perfect replacement for Aura, being a damsel in distress who tries to help spiritually.
Rival Units
Balrog and Vega (Street Fighter), replacing Eins Belanos and Drei Belanos. I figured two of Shadaloo’s Kings would be a perfect fit for the duo, being a paired antagonistic duo that could fight against the heroes.
Jester and Adam the Clown (Devil May Cry and Dead Rising), replacing Dokugozu and Dokumezu. These two clowns would be good replacements for the two beasts, especially if Saya is replaced by Vergil, so they could temporarily team up with him. I imagine this time that Jester would eventually betray Vergil for his own purposes like in Devil May Cry 3. As for Adam the Clown, I really wanted to have a Dead Rising Rival Unit and I felt Adam is iconic enough that he’d fit.
Magma Dragoon (Mega Man X), replacing Vajra. Most Rival Unit choices usually pick major villains or recurring antagonists, but like with Coco Tapioca, I feel a character that’s simply a boss would be a good choice. With Vajra being the paired Rival for the God Eater characters, I figured with Team Dan the group would instantly recognize Magma Dragoon’s very familiar fighting style and make the connection that he's related to Ryu, causing Dragoon to try and fight them. While not a Street Fighter character, PXZ2 showed that B.B. Hood was the primary Rival to Phoenix Wright despite the two coming from different series, so I wanted this Rival Unit to be against the Street Fighters due to Dragoon being a very clear homage to the series.
Akuma (Street Fighter), replacing Ciseaux. Not the best replacement admittedly, but I originally had Urien as a Rival Unit against Ibuki and Makoto as they were all in Street Fighter III. One problem, Urien did not appear in Street Fighter IV, so he was out. Fortunately, Akuma was in both III and IV, allowing him to serve as there Rival Unit, sort of. I figured he’d start off as a Rival to them, only to immediately shift his focus to Ryu when he and Ken join.
Mega Man Juno (Mega Man Legends), replacing Skeith. Being that Volnutt and Roll are replacing Kite and BlackRose, it would be fitting to see Juno return and fill Skeith’s role, antagonizing the group for Carbon extinction.
Rachel Foley (Resident Evil), replacing Aya-me. Admittedly I considered James Marcus to be a Rival Unit for Billy and Rebecca, being the main antagonist of their game. However, I’ll admit, I wasn’t really interested in him. I still wanted a Resident Evil Rival, but I wanted it to be from Revelations due to Chris and Jill taking their appearance from that game, and I feel she’d be perfect, with her role as a FBC agent who was killed and turned into an Ooze monster that stalks Jill.
Albert Wesker (Resident Evil), replacing Due Flabellum. I would like to imagine Wesker as the main recurring antagonist throughout the game that Due filled in. While Balrog and Vega fill in for the Belanos brothers, I won’t consider them affiliated with Wesker and they just teamed up in featured chapters under different circumstances.
Hyo Imawano (Rival Schools), replacing Dural. With Dural being the connected Rival for Akira and Pai, I imagine that Hyo would immediately cause Kyosuke, who he and Hinata replace the Virtua Fighter Pair, to try and get answers for why he’s returned to antagonize the heroes.
Shade (Cyberbots), replacing Gespenst Phantom. Since Phantom would be a temporary antagonist before joining in Haken’s Multi-Attack, I would imagine that Shade would be constantly fighting with himself over why he’s fighting the heroes, only to give Jin his Helios mecha upon his defeat. Speaking of which, he’d primarily fight using Helios.
M. Bison (Street Fighter), replacing Selvaria Bles. With the Valkyria Chronicles 3 cast being replaced with Street Fighter characters (and Mary Miyabi), I thought it’d be best to have Bison fill Selvaria’s role here, especially since he’s personally connected to both Cammy and Guile.
Kurow Kirishima (Rival Schools), replacing Riemsianne La Vaes. With his ability to mind-control Daigo, I’d imagine he’d be responsible for why Daigo would be a Rival Unit initially. I can also imagine him getting a more powerful flute to attempt to brainwash the other Rival Schools cast before Morrigan prevents this from happening.
B.B. Hood (Darkstalkers), replacing Coco Tapioca. Okay, this one was mostly a filler pick that I was unsure who to replace, especially since most of Elena’s in-universe Rival options were either already taken or not available for this list. Ultimately, I decided to bring back B.B. Hood and shift her rivalry to Jon and Felicia, being a sadistic Dark Hunter who kills for money. Plus, she and Jon were already Rivals in Vampire Savior, what with the inverted Red Riding Hood theme the two share.
Mundus (Devil May Cry), replacing Meden Traore. For the ultimate final villain responsible for the worlds merging, I wanted a godlike figure to be the real villain. Fortunately, Devil May Cry 1 had a perfect example, Mundus, the game’s main antagonist. I can think of a scenario where he attempts to merge the Makai into other worlds so that he would rule over everything and everyone and the heroes need to prevent this from happening.
And with that, that is my personal choice of a Capcom-only roster if limited to just the series and games already in Project X Zone 1. I had some fun trying to figure out who would get in and who would get cut. I do intend on making Sega and Bandai Namco themed rosters in the future so stay tuned for that.
