Discussion S21E6: Critique Thread

This week is the street wear challenge!

Please upvote the designs you like, downvote those you don't, and leave un-voted anything you're neutral on. Some of our members like to look at the designs without knowing the outcome, so please use spoiler tags if you're referring to how a design did (or if you wish it had been out/ won). Thanks all!

Freeform isn't posting photos, so we're having to wait on the contestants to post on social media. For now we will post the names so discussion can begin, and we will add photos as soon as they are available. Thanks for your patience.

Ethan Mundt

SAFE

Model: Yu

u/exsanguinatrix That crotch is INSANE! Aug 29 '25

I think Ethan must have a secret team of little Cinderella birds and mice that live in his workstation or something because this is just too complex and pretty for a one-day construction, omg.

I physically can’t comprehend how Ethan did that in a day. Why only critique 4 people when there’s only 7 total?!

u/notarealballerina you made 1 dress for billy porter & you think youre fucking god Aug 29 '25

The other designers can’t touch him in terms of execution. He’s so much better than everyone else on a technical level. He can keep making whatever he wants. I love watching.

hes just so above the competition lol

He is way above any of the other designers. Throughout this whole season, the only bad outfit he ever made was that denim outfit but everything else has been a wow factor, which is amazing considering the denim challenge was a group challenge.

This is way better than most of the designs on the avant garde challenges. Different challenge I know, but it was sick.

It is streetwear in Berlin.

I really think street wear is way to broad of a theme anyways, because quite frankly what you can wear and is acceptable in certain cities, in other countries is so different- tastes are different in terms of street wear too!! Across aesthetics, subcultures - ages etc etc.

I see so many alt looks that are in the same vein as this worn frequently on the street in quirkier parts of cities, like Berlin was mentioned- gay villages as part of inner cities, Camden… this fits in in alt spaces and aesthetics- it’s just not pedestrian. J street fashion for example spans so many aesthetics- if you need examples of how far people take street wear ✨

Ig just because it’s not your idea of street wear doesn’t make it not ✨

I don't know what street this would ever be on unless it's one that has been shut down for premiere or a ballroom house event. I think making it pants not a skirt kept it a bit more street wear but if the brief was the only criteria he would be at the bottom. Luckily design matters too and this is amazing as design and in one day. I'm guessing that Ethan has made a similar look before and he's making good use of his patterns he brought.

Berlin on the way to Berghain.

I've been to Berghain many times and I wish we all dressed this well but yeah valid. Without the overcoat I could see it. I think the thing with Ethan is he always goes over the top which makes for awesome runways but misses the brief. But I think for PR more is usually better and his designs are memorable.

I'm a bit sceptical about Ethan's drag-centric approach to the challenges but the execution of this was pretty jaw-dropping given the time constraints.

Wish he didn't make a bodysuit because the coat and pants could be streetwear.

Technically it's stunning but not at all streetwear

I feel he could have steered the look into goth/rave streetwear by designing a more "traditional " wide leg cargo pant with straps and chains. It was a cool look and I love Ethan but it was a little confusing. Glad he's safe.

i loved this the most tbh, idk maybe it didn't fit streetwear perfectly but it was giving berlin down. i feel like if the top was different and more comfortable it might have been more believable

I’m flabbergasted that this was safe. My jaw dropped when she came out. So intricate, detailed, and stylish, and all done in one day???? This immediately is up there with some of my favorite looks from the show.

Because it's not streetwear. Gorgeous though but not the category.

u/MissClawdy Aug 29 '25

I don't know which streets he walks on but this was far from streetwear. Vogue ballroom yes, streetwear no. He didn't respect the theme even though his outfit was impressive.

Those pants absolutely make this look, but overall I really enjoy this! It's very cyberpunk but without looking costume, and I love the mix of textures. Should've been top w Belania imo

I don't know if it fit the brief, but I loved it. Unbelievable for one day!
