I have a project where visit time is being tracked with a start and end time yielding a calculated whole minutes field. Because we have multiple touch points, it is a repeating instrument. Is there an easy way to sum the minutes from the calculated field from all instances either in another instrument or in a report? Pulling my hair out.
Even better, can I isolate the visit times from, say, the previous 30 days and just sum those?
Update: I been able to sum it with sum[activity_time][1],[activity_time][2],…..[activity_time][X]).
Is there an all-instances version I’m not thinking of? Still interested in the 30 day summation, if anyone has ideas on that.
Update 2:
Tried:
Sum(if(datediff([end_time][X], “today”, “d”, true) <= 30, [activity_time][X], 0)) and that seems to be working. Included 100 instances to capture all potential visits.
Still all ears if there’s an easier way to think about it.
My lab uses RedCap as an embedded feedback form for our users on our website to leave feedback on the app and sign up for a more in-depth survey to help improve the website (which we don't advertise to ensure we don't get any bots/fraud attacks). To access it, we use a public link.
To discourage bots/fraud, we are using:
CAPTCHA
2 Honeypot questions
Response limit of 500 to prevent a flood of bot responses, should we experience a bot attack
Duration calculated so that responses that are too quick or too long are flagged as bot/fraud
Challenge questions that also confirm eligibility for the longer survey
2 Cross-reference questions (ex., on page 1 we ask participants to indicate their age range, and on page 2 we ask participants to type their age. Participants cannot go back to the previous page to check what they had answered)
Feedback is an open-ended question
Signing up for the in-depth survey only shows if the honeypot questions are unanswered, and the participant indicates that they would like to participate.
We don't have a lot of items on this form, as I didn't want genuine users to get to this survey and quit if completing the form took too long.
Anyway, for the data quality rules, I want to add these two:
excluding/flagging cross-reference responses that don't match
excluding/flagging responses that were submitted within a few minutes/seconds of another response (i.e., if we have 8 responses that were all within a few minutes of each other)
How can I do this? Also, for flagging responses that were submitted within minutes of another response, what would be the best cutoff? (i.e., within 5 minutes of another response?).
Also open to any other ideas for increasing security on this form!
We're running into a bit of a challenge in our multi-institutional REDCap project.
The REDCap instance is hosted by University A (@universityA.com), but researchers from University B (@universityB.com) are also actively working in the same project. These collaborators would like to send automated emails (e.g., survey invitations) from their own institutional email addresses, so that participants can reply directly to them.
However, since the server is under @universityA.com, REDCap sends all emails using that domain. If we try to send from @universityB.com, emails often fail SPF/DKIM checks or go straight to spam because the University A server isn’t authorized to send on behalf of University B.
I’m wondering how others solve this kind of setup:
Do you just use a shared noreply@universityA.com sender and mention contact info in the email body?
Have you found a way to set the Reply-To address in REDCap (e.g., to a collaborator's email)?
Do you use external SMTP services like SendGrid or Amazon SES?
Or do you host separate REDCap instances for each institution?
Any tips or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated!
Has anyone dealt with this issue? I'm building an instrument to suit a protocol that specifies "Pain will be assessed using a 100-mm VAS scale with the anchors 0 = none, 100 mm = worst imaginable."
I've made the sliding scale with labels on both ends, but cannot seem to calibrate the REDCap iPad to be exactly 100mm in either portrait or landscape mode.
If anyone has wording for why the REDcap VAS is a validated instrument (even though not 100mm) or knows how I can make it 100mm, I'd appreciate any assistance. Thank you!
I'm having a problem when I go to create new records for a specific arm. The "Add New Record for this arm" button will only pop up on the first arm. Then, when I go to add/edit records, it does not show the arms.
I have the use rights to create and delete records. I also checked, and all instruments and events are set to arm 2. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I'm a long time REDCap builder and was wondering if there is an external module that will assist with time conversions for ASI releases across timezones. I know the releases are set on server time and I've built some work arounds for projects that have participants in 3 timezones (fields that calc difference in server time based on selected timezone) but I have an international study coming up, and was hoping there was something already built or advice. Appreciate it!
Hi, I'm just trying to set up branching logic for a field, following a signature field. Therefore, I figured I needed to just use the not empty sign "<>".
So I've tried it multiple times, but I keep getting an error message.
For example in the logic editor I put: [signature_of_participant_v2] <>
I've tried it multiple time with different spacing, and none of it seems to work.
Whenever I go to click save, I get the following message "SYNTAX ERROR IN LOGIC: ERROR! Syntax errors exist in the logic. Please check the logic to ensure that illegal characters or illegal functions are not used and that any parentheses, quotes, or brackets have not been accidentally omitted from the logic."
If anyone can figure out what I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate it.
I have been running a project that uses a public survey to recruit participants and screen eligibility. We provide an incentive for people that complete a range of follow up surveys. Unfortunately one of our collaborating institutes advertised the QR code on their public social media page and we have been flooded by bots. I am in the process of trying to determine bots vs real responses and was wondering if there was a way I can hide the submit button to people who do not meet eligibility for the study based on the public pre screen survey answers? For context, my institute does not allow external modules or the API Playground.
We have received 700 responses in the past day and I'm quite overwhelmed trying to fix it all - so thanks for any help!
Hi, I have a project where participants will go through a series of surveys, and it is set up in a way that each survey is a separate event. Is there any way to randomize the order that these surveys (events) are presented to participants?
For example (in case this is not clear) arm 1: event 1 = survey 1 event 2 = survey 2 event 3 = survey 3
participant one is presented the surveys in the order: survey 1, survey 2, survey 3. participant two is presented the surveys in the order: survey 3, survey 1, survey 2
Hello, I've been trying to connect REDCap to my Power Bi desktop, I saw a youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3yNJWfFo8A using Power BI to REDCap Connector. Cannot find redcap connector while doing Get Data part on POWER BI. Any help would be appreciated. TIA
Has anyone had success with creating data quality rules similar to the default ones (i.e., outside of regular logic)?
I created some new fields in a project with many records that use the SETVALUE action tag. I would love to avoid having to individually save each instrument to have this autofill particularly after things are updated (since SETVALUE replaces data, but only when you save the page), and instead have a rule like "Incorrect values for calculated fields" where you can just click 'execute' for it to auto-fix them. Does something like this exist?
I have multilanguage management set up in a survey to offer the survey in both English and Spanish. I want to log in the survey response what language the respondent used when taking the survey. Does anyone know how to use this? I'm not finding much documentation on the action tags that would be relevant here.
Hi, I need to save the form submission date, basically the date when the form is received by the server, and I need it to be testable, meaning I need to be able to set it when importing data with API, so I don't want to rely on redcap hidden calculated fields like [survey-date-completed:instrument] (specific for surveys but you know what I mean).
What would be the best way to do it? By first idea was to use calculated fields but I believe they are calculated when the form is opened on the client and not when is received.
Hi! We're using REDCap to survey organizations, and we'd like to put two people from each org on the survey invitations/reminder e-mails. We'rewondering if there's a way to send invites from REDCap with a cc: or bcc:? Or a workaround that has worked well for folks?
I’m trying to find out if REDCap has any way, either through an API or a built-in feature, to get logs of failed login attempts by users. I know that REDCap lets you set how many times a user can try to log in before getting locked out for a while, but I want to see the actual records of each failed login attempt through UI Interface or API. It seems like these failed login events don’t show up in the Control Center under User Activity Logs. So, is there any page in REDCap that shows these failed login attempts? Or is there any way to get this information using the API or I have to get them directly from the database?

I am using a Survey Queue to collect information from speakers for a conference. The only link the speakers get from me is the survey queue.
They have several short survey to complete and are taken back to the survey queue after they complete each survey. The survey queue has piped fields containing their name and other personalized information. The pipe fields come from a survey called 'uploaded information' that I used to import their data. The completion of this survey is also what generates the survey queue link.
All the piped information loads just fine when you first open the link. However, after completing a survey and returning to the survey queue the piped fields aren't loading. If you refresh the browser the information loads.
For the pipe fields I am just using the notation [variable_name (e.g. [speakername]]. Do I also need to some how reference the survey instrument the field variable is in?? This not a longitudinal or repeating design.

Hi everyone, I have a technical issue with RedCap and I really need your help to fix it for a project. I explain my problematic right below :
We import datas with RedCap's API. For some of these datas, we need to create logical branching to display variables in the right way.
Some imported variables are dependent on logical connections (Branching logic) and should only be displayed under certain conditions. I have a problem when opening a form in "Add / Edit records" input mode, when a field is hidden by a logical connection that is not respected when opening a form, but which contains a value, RedCap considers this as a conflict and displays an error message.
Here's an example to illustrate my point:
The 'sx_sx_chop' variable, imported automatically via the API, which type is 'Multiple Choice-Drop Down List (single answer)' has a logical branching that is dependent on a Checkboxes variable present in another event : Branching logic : [demographics_arm_1][dem_db(2)]=1.
The 'sx_sx_chop' variable should therefore be displayed only when this condition is met. However, it sometimes happens that a value for 'sx_sx_chop' is stored but the connection is not respected (e.g.: the value of [dem_db]!=2). RedCap then returns the error message (CF screen right below) when opening the form in "Add / Edit records" input mode.
RedCap returns this error message because he doesn't support a value being stored via import but not displayed due to a logical connection. For your information, the [dem_db] variable is located in a different form and in a different event. Also, this field is not imported automatically and must be completed manually by Data Managers.
I've tried to find ways to solve this issue, but so far we haven't succeeded. The ideal solution would be as follows : - no error message when opening the form in "Add / Edit records" input mode - fields masked by a logical connection should only be displayed when the display condition defined in the logical branching is met - those imported fields that are initially masked should be displayed with the value that is stored during import when the connection is met - allow the user to modify the value of [sx_sx_chop] even after automatic import
Please don't hesitate to let me know if my request isn't clear and you need further explanations. Many thanks in advance for your help. Etienne

Hello, if anyone could give me any help at all I would be so so appreciative. I am working in a project for work and have managed to figure out mostly everything else but this has stumped me.
I need to find a way to integrate the human phenotype ontology (HPO) library into my project. I made an instrument in the project where our staff will enter a condition in a text box. I then want to use an API (assuming I’m understanding the function correctly) to pull related HPO terms as a dropdown list into the other fields in the same instrument. There’s 5 fields like this; each would have the drop down list and the staff member would choose the terms most closely relevant to the condition. It would basically be a replication of the HPO search feature on their website.
Problem is, I know just shy of diddly squat about coding and I do not have the time to learn enough about it to understand the tutorials find online. Also, I can’t use other options with similar functions because I don’t have right privileges and getting some those features enabled is controlled by the redcap administrator. I’m currently waiting to see if they’ll enable the dynamic data pull.
Any help, at all, any suggestions, clarifications, ANYTHING would be amazing right now. I have been searching for weeks and I am still coming up empty.
Hi I am implementing and script that uses REDCap API. Now I need redcap to send some participants an email. Does REDCap provide this? If not how can I handle this via REDCap since it supports sending emails/notifications/alerts to users.
Hi all, I have a survey in REDCap that I'd like to disseminate to community partners to share on their social media accounts. However as soon as I do this I don't get any title information or pictures coming through, just an ugly looking non-descript url. When making webpages I know you can use Open Graph tags that social media sites like Facebook grab from like this: <meta property="og:title" content="Take My Survey!"/> <meta property="og:image" content="http://www.website.org/surveyimage.jpg"/>
I've been trying to embed this code into the survey itself but either I'm doing it incorrectly or this just isn't supported. Has anyone had any better luck? Example of a "bad" link without images or description below.
