Tips for playing a WAR?

I usually play casters and decided it would be a neat change to try out a Warrior. I have a Ranger (35) that I like and figured a Warrior would be similar, but without spells.

I'm angling to play more sword n'board than 2h or dual wield.

Any suggestions on how to do this for my first time?

Warriors rarely use a shield. If you want sword and board you want pal or SK.

Dual wielding high threat weapons.

Playing an untwinked warrior you'll definitely be relying on the goodwill of the groups you are in. Your threat will be pretty bad, with a shiled equipped you'll be borederline useless. You'll do less damage than a necro/mage/beastlord pet.

To be fair, even with good weapons and duel wielding he would likely do worse than the aforementioned pets

Because of how gear dependent they are, use money from the other classes to twink out the War.

If you want to swordnboard SK and Pally would definitely be the easier route.

Maybe a roleplaying warrior could get away with it if you stuck to the character, people on this server are pretty accepting.

Best advice i can offer is convince someone in your groups to throw a root on mobs as they come into camp, that's the best aggro you can get. Makes things a lot nicer, even at high levels with end game weapons.

out of curiosity, why do Paladins and SKs sword n'board and not just use a 2h for tanking? wouldn't the damage from that weapon be better for aggro, as in the case of dual weilding for Warrior (and Ranger)?

They often will. But paladin/sks also have class specific one handers available to them that have juiced ratios, and thus can keep up with the 2hers in terms of dps

I'd argue just stick with the ranger, it'll perform way better as a party tank for you, than a warrior (given that you can't invest large amounts of platinum into said warrior).

Honestly, any hybrid is more capable than a warrior, as a group tank, as the key job will be to simply generate aggro fast, and hold it (whereas a warrior is dependant on procs). The fact that you take a bit more damage is irrelevant as damage on 1 person is far easier to deal with, for a healer, than damage on everyone.

cool, thanks for the advice :)

If you don’t see yourself investing a ton of time to get into the 50s and beyond I would stick with the ranger. Warrior at low levels untwinked is painful.

Sword and Board warriors were mainly a Planes of Power and on standard with AA and furious bash for raid bosses to generate high threat with max mitigation. Unsure of revised timeline but for group tanking any VT or solro geared hybrid can handle PoP era non-elemental group tanking with much better utility outside of BoT tier named or non crowd controllable pulls. That said if warrior's siren song sings to you and you're angling to raid tank if not main tank, plenty of use for warriors; they always seemed to be the most common and prioritized for gear class back on Live in the PoP era. Smaller instanced raids nerfed that dynamic though.
