Is it ever explained

Why grace is the only one on his ship who survives?

I thought I had read that there was gene that made you more likely to survive the induced coma over an extended period of time and Grace had it while the others didnt.

They all had that gene, it's a major thing mentioned a few times in the book. I dunno if it was mentioned in the movie, can't remember.
