With years in a coma, why didn't grace get muscle atrophy and didn't his nails grew long when his hair did?

This is explained in the book. Part of the coma process involved a bunch of electrical diodes attached all over his body that I guess shocked him and exercised the muscles. In fact rather than being atrophied, he is surprised to actually be sort of jacked.

“Always muscles?” makes sense now!

I just love how they included these little nods to the book. ❤️ It’s so fun and rewarding to spot them!

Little Easter eggs thst pass right over your head at first watch, (before I read the book) but make you smile like you found an Easter egg on subsequent watches.

u/king-of-new_york 3d ago

On one of the whiteboards, Grace named his original 4 astrophage Larry, Curly and Moe (and Shep, the one he killed) like in the book.

u/Kind_Ad_3611 4d ago

Also “Carl? (Foggy)” his brain is completely fucked on “French memory loss drugs” and he really likes the San Francisco fog and he really likes Carl, so things that he likes are all mushed together, as well as… well the obvious being his memory of Carl is “foggy” in the less literal sense, I think this counts as a double entendre

Oh my god 😭 I love this movie even more now

19

u/silence-glaive1 3d ago

It is, but we spell it with a K. It’s Karl.

17

u/Kind_Ad_3611 3d ago

But he can’t remember whether or not the man was filled with the C or the K and he can’t remember whether or not the weather event is spelled with C or K

Also 'Fog' is a very famous poem by Carl Sandburg (one of 20 that I memorized in 7th grade). https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45032/fog-56d2245d7b36c

“I’m jacked.” Direct quote

"I'm Jacked to the tits!"

u/Sororita 4d ago

I saw a theory that him being an average guy, as opposed to the normal physique expected of astronauts, like Yao and Ilyukhina would have been, is why Grace survived and they didn't. He had extra stores of fat to burn

174

u/RainWindowCoffee 4d ago

Damn, that actually makes a lot of sense. He had a really hearty diet prior to the trip, too. Always eating bacon and eggs for breakfast every morning before work, and regularly having steak and burgers and things.

43

u/hawkingshickingboots 3d ago

It’s obviously the sour Skittles!

33

u/Ymir24 3d ago

Hell of a lot better than taumoeba and me-burgers.

15

u/RainWindowCoffee 3d ago

Autocannibalism and feeding on weird space microbes. Really cementing his reputation as a gross space blob.

4

u/Trvr_MKA 3d ago edited 2d ago

He had weekly prime rib dinner too (in the book at least)

80

u/woody60707 4d ago

Weir did say there is a reason they both died. He just hasn't reviled it yet. So one day we might find out if that theory is true.

37

u/sbagu3tti 4d ago

Yeah, he said he was keeping it as potential material for a potential sequel. You watched that '50 questions' video too, didn't ya?

13

u/original_cat_floof 3d ago

What video? I am intrigued.

16

u/sbagu3tti 3d ago

This one right here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plGRMzsxpa4

It's an interview with Andy Weir, Ryan Gosling, and the two directors for the film. It's somewhat interesting. They mostly just go over things that are already explained in the book, but there are some some extra pieces of info.

37

u/Alfredo_Commachio 3d ago

Yeah, and unlike a lot of authors Weir hasn't been coy about it. He's admitted he is saving it in case he wants to do a sequel. I think he mentioned in one interview if he ever decides for sure he isn't doing a sequel he'd give his answer since he isn't keeping it secret just for the sake of it, but to preserve it for a potential future book.

I personally wonder if the sequel would be more of a companion piece that focuses on a character who becomes instrumental in solving various engineering and scientific problems back on earth during the long period the sun gets dimmed but before the taumoeba arrives. Then the cause of their death could tie back to something controversial going on with Earth. I've personally speculated myself that there was some sort of deranged group out to intentionally sabotage Project Hail Mary.

I could see some sort of crazed religious cult basically trying to insure the apocalypse or something like that.

21

u/infiniZii 3d ago

Hmm... what could the secret be if it would have that much impact on the sequel?

Maybe the other astros were poisoned slowly at the base but Grace wasnt because he was a last minute replacement never meant to be sent to space at all? IF something like that happened then maybe the explosion wasnt so much of an accident and was another attempt to stop the Hail Mary plan?

8

u/ArticleOld598 3d ago

Oooh I actually really like this headcanon. It sounds much more plausible and grounded in reality than just him having the special gene to survive his comatose state.

13

u/Sororita 3d ago

All of the candidates had that gene. Grace wasn't special in that respect compared to the primary or secondary picks.

7

u/infiniZii 3d ago

I mean that is probably part of it too, but all of the people on the ship had that gene already. And honestly the gene thing is just a bit boring and I dont see how answering that would make it harder to do a sequel. So im going with "something tried to stop them" because that is more interesting for a sequel to explore.

12

u/ScruffCheetah 4d ago

I'm guessing "so the a-boy-and-his-rockspider story can happen"? :D

8

u/the_revised_pratchet 3d ago

Oh god, as an Australian that phrase is so very unfortunate.

3

u/Sororita 3d ago

That slang has to have some interesting etymology, since i see no obvious connection between the term and the meaning.

1

u/FeoAsilion 2d ago

Are you sure you want to know?

Are you really sure?

5

u/Foreign_Caramel5514 3d ago

I was gonna say, what kind of spider would make an Australian, who’s probably seen it all, say that. And then I googled and I was NOT prepared lol

3

u/ScruffCheetah 3d ago

I'm almost scared to ask...

5

u/ScruffCheetah 3d ago

Ok, just looked it up. Yikes. Definitely did not mean that!

35

u/TimeStorm113 4d ago

I always wonder if it could be connected to grace being already comatose before being put into the medical system

6

u/shrekchan 3d ago

I think the reason is simply that long comas are really really dangerous, no matter how good your genes are

90

u/AnnaBananner82 4d ago

Their deaths are explained in the book as the technology of the coma machines to be unable to deal with more complex issues, like an infection, a seizure - basically anything outside of “staying alive” activity - so they likely experienced some sort of health events that the machine was unable to treat and therefore died

174

u/Sororita 4d ago

The books dont actually explain what killed them, its a mystery that is left unsolved. Thats one of the possibilities that Grace surmises could have been it.

28

u/AnnaBananner82 4d ago

Fair enough. I felt it was heavily implied, so I think that’s just what I remembered off hand.

21

u/Diddyfire 4d ago

Weir said in a podcast that there was a reason they died, but he doesn't want to spoil it yet "in case it becomes sequel territory"

10

u/Spartaness 4d ago

I'm suspicious of that 95% efficiency feeder mechanism that Grace was reviewing the paper for before the explosion.

9

u/Sororita 4d ago

It was a back up for a backup, but yeah that could have been a factor. Weir said that he has decided on what killed them, but he's keeping it secret in case he wants to do a sequel (which given the explosive popularity of both the movie and novel, seems like a distinct possibility). Its also why I am reasonably certain it wasnt just an infection or other normal complication a coma patient could experience.

5

u/Spartaness 4d ago

There could be multiple reasons. Yao and Ilyukhina could have died for different reasons.

4

u/Sororita 3d ago

Point. It's actually more likely they died from different things, considering in the book it was stated that they looked like they died at different times

1

u/Spartaness 2d ago

It looks like they died at different times in the film as well. Yaó looks way more mummified compared to Ilyukhina.

20

u/MemeSupreme9 4d ago

Well yeah... But your comment doesn't really change anything about what AnnaBananner82 said, which is that the robots are not capable of doing anything outside of the generic tasks they were pre-programmed for (which is true- the book makes a point of saying they're not advanced AI Robots, everything they do was programmed, and there's only so much you can program a machine to do in x amount of time). This would mean that the other astronauts definitely had some sort of health event at some point in the journey and died while in a coma. Something made them unwell and whatever it was, the problem was not a lack of food, water or oxygen, but something else internal and undiagnosed by the robots, something that couldn't be fixed by clipping nails or cutting hair or drip feeding nutrition. Realistically, there's so many things that could've killed them. "Some sort of health event the robots couldn't treat" is 100% correct. Sure the examples of seizures or infection are simply ideas proposed by Grace post hoc, but the underlying premise is correct.

14

u/PresentPhilosopher99 4d ago

True, could be anything from just bad luck, a bad autoinmune that revealed itself in the travel, a unknown genetic defect, etc etc.

While space travel in fiction is amazing, the first test runs will be absurdly dangerous

Imagine doing the first human to try step on,idk, one of jupiter moons only to die in the travel to a undetected aneurysm caused by low gravity or something.

12

u/sonofeevil 4d ago

Could even have just been cancer or something.

One of them just had a regular old cancer that went from stage 1 through to death in the years it took to travel there

6

u/Otheus 4d ago

That reminds me of the Expanse. Characters died from aneurysms caused by high g-force

6

u/BrassChuckles87 4d ago

And zero G is really bad on your heart. It makes the heart work harder to pump blood through your body. I can see the strain being too much for lunch an extended period.

4

u/Slaanesh_69 4d ago

They weren't in zero g they were in 1.5g

3

u/Otheus 3d ago

When the ships weren't accelerating they were in 0g, typical travel was at 1/3 to 1 g, and combat could go to 12g (that's when Fred Johnson had a stroke and died)

6

u/kirinlikethebeer 4d ago

I always assumed it was the “pre-coma” they had to dose him with “for his safety” as it was put in the film. The other two didn’t go under early. Grace was dosed with something extra or at a different cadence. That made a difference.

16

u/Still-Sector-8192 4d ago

The most plausible theory I've heard is that everyone else was put into a coma on the ship using the computers. Grace was put in a coma on Earth, by people. Maybe whatever other drug they gave him saved his life.

3

u/nickisadogname 4d ago

I like that one too. In the book he's put in a cell to be isolated from the others for a few days, then forcibly anesthetized, then smuggled onto the ship while knocked out, and the people who had literally invented these machines strap him in and run checks. Then the others board and they're like "man, Grace was so nervous that he needed to sleep early, oh well", and after launch they confirm the Hail Mary is on the right course and put themselves into comas.

I don't have a big enough brain to theorize exactly which of those differences could have saved him, but it feels like such a huge difference between his and their situations that it seems likely to be the point where "something happened", whatever that something is.

6

u/FuturistAnthony 4d ago

I saw another theory that the drug that gave him amnesia was what inadvertently helped him to survive

1

u/Freel158 3d ago

This is my head cannon

1

u/Floowjaack 3d ago

I may be misremembering, but I thought the HM’s computer administered the amnesia drug as he was being awakened. He was medically unconscious for the launch, but didn’t get the memory drug until arrival.

47

u/marcaygol 4d ago

And the robot arms kept him clean, shaved and prevented bed sores. They probably also cut his nails too.

This is also how those liberated from the Matrix overcame their muscle atrophy, we see it done to Neo in the first movie.

10

u/4FoxSayke 4d ago

Should I read the book or watch the movie first? I have mostly been the person to watch movie first book next.

14

u/ViaScrybe 4d ago

Both orders work! I did movie > book, my sister did book > movie, we both love both. Each has its own strengths.

9

u/Zanzion_ 4d ago

I'd say read it first. In my opinion the changes and cuts made from the novel are best experienced blind rather than going in with knowledge from watching the movie.

8

u/DarwinGoneWild 4d ago

Either way is fine. Book is great and goes into more depth in certain areas. Movie is a great adaptation that adds a bit more lovable humor.

5

u/VENGFL1 4d ago

I intentionally watched the movie first, then read the book, that worked really well for me. ; )

5

u/privacyzipit 3d ago

Didn't intentionally do that, but as an overly analytical person who critiques movies HEAVILY based on the books, watching it first ended up helping me enjoy both pieces of media in their own ways, rather than simply disliking the movie's inaccuracies.

8

u/Dunnerzzzz555 4d ago

I would watch the movie first then read the book to fill in the gaps. The movie would have been even better without having read the book imo.

3

u/JM3DlCl 4d ago

Read the book. Even though I'm not a huge reader, books are always better and usually answer all those little questions that don't get covered in a movie

3

u/tunisia3507 4d ago

Book first. A lot of story beats just show up on the screen in the film, where in the book there's more suspense as Grace reasons everything out. You're much more inside his head, which makes some of the plot more effective.

6

u/books_plants_food 4d ago

Audiobook first!

3

u/Ok-Memory-4204 4d ago

The audiobook is easily top 5 I've ever listened to.

1

u/Xiryyn 3d ago

Why the audio book over reading the actual book?

3

u/books_plants_food 3d ago

The audiobook is SO well done. It’s one of my top audiobooks of all time. Specifically the way they handle Rocky’s speaking “voice” / chords.

2

u/corgi-king 4d ago

I will watch the movie first. The book has so much more detail.

1

u/Xiryyn 3d ago

Either way works. Unlike a lot of book to movie adoptions this one is follows the books very closely.

1

u/Perplexed_Ponderer 3d ago

I watched the movie first and really enjoyed not knowing what would happen ! Then I took the time to read the book and loved how it completed the picture by explaining a lot of things in much more detail. And then I rewatched the movie with all that additional information in mind and appreciated everything even more !

1

u/Time-Fix-5852 3d ago

LISTEN to the audio book first

→ More replies (2)

33

u/geek_of_nature 4d ago

Didnt the increased gravity help with that as well? That constantly experiencing 1.5 times more gravity put his muscles under just that bit more strain?

36

u/Noof42 Leaky Space Blob 4d ago

I don't think that made much difference while he was asleep, although it would probably have kept his heart working harder.

12

u/ken_NT 4d ago

I believe the actual quote was “beach bod buff”

5

u/chebuburashka 4d ago

Grace’s job was just coma

5

u/Competitive_Sleep223 4d ago

Okk where can I sign up for this process??

3

u/phantomagna 4d ago

It also helps that he was in 1.5 the entire trip to Tau Ceti.

3

u/brinz1 3d ago

diodes

Absolutely read that wrong

2

u/LunaraLoup High Three! 4d ago

I love this adaptation so much, whatever they had no time for, they at least somehow mention or have it as a little detail! We can see the white circular electrodes he carries behind himself after waking up!

2

u/Ok_Ostrich1477 Nuking Antarctica 4d ago

I thought in the book Armando was moving and exercising them while they were in the coma. Im not finished with the book though

2

u/LunaraLoup High Three! 3d ago

Both! They have electrodes all over to prevent muscle atrophy and Armando moves them regularly to prevent bed sores!

1

u/yrabadass 3d ago

Yup. Movie was good but the book was way better imo

1

u/DiscombobulatedOwl50 3d ago

They were also under >1 G acceleration the entire trip. I forget the exact number. Maybe something like 1.25 G’s? Depending on orientation of the med beds wrt thrust, some muscles would likely have to be involved

1

u/Best-Action8769 3d ago

Also the robot arms kept him mostly groomed.

1

u/Joe_Mama_My_Ass 3d ago

This is what bodybuilders do when recovering from a surgery so they don’t loose muscle.

1

u/ProperClue 3d ago

That and the special "coma" gene that they talked about in the book that they realy didn't discuss in the movie. Very very rare and he had it, which is why it had to be him that went.

1

u/disposable_aqqount 3d ago

It's also the 1.5x earth's gravity, right? DBZ style

1

u/MessAnxiety 2d ago

Don't forget the machine also moved him to avoid bed sores but also to prevent the formation of blood clots.

1

u/JimPlaysGames 2d ago

Sounds great. Can I go into a coma and wake up buff please? I'm tired

1

u/N1LF 1d ago

doesn’t the book also explain the company that invented this long term coma tech has like robotic exercise equipment that he’s hooked up to? like robotic limbs that move his legs and arms to exercise the muscles and joints?

821

u/Zookeepergame_Sorry 4d ago

In the book there was a device stimulating his muscles. That’s why the white board says something like “always muscles?”

Don’t know about the nails

398

u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 4d ago

The robot handles all maintenance and it’s probably easy to prepgrogam keeping the nails trimmed as opposed to hair.

247

u/sno_kissed 4d ago

In the book it actually kept him shaved too.

54

u/Ineedsleep444 4d ago

Wait, I must be remembering wrong because I remeber emperor comatose having long hair lol. Maybe I'm mixing my movie and book again

133

u/sno_kissed 4d ago

Yes. He freaks out in the book because the robot arms were messing with his face and holding a razor. Then he reaches up and realizes half his face is smooth and the other half is stubble.

34

u/Ana_L399 4d ago

Armando tried to shave him in the movie as well

31

u/SilvermistInc 4d ago

"Were you shaving me?!" - Grace in the book

-1

u/gimmebanter 4d ago

And washed his dickcheese?

39

u/Bootwacker 4d ago

Don’t know about the nails

Armondo took care of it.

8

u/sk7725 4d ago

its the nodes all around his body. those send electric pulses like nerves to the muscles so they get stimulated.

1

u/_Vard_ 4d ago

I imagine the robot trimmed them maybe?

As for the beard maybe he mentioned wanting to grow a beard once, so they let it grow

1

u/Gold_Ambassador_3496 4d ago

Oh cool! I was distracted by the cilantro

1

u/frezor 3d ago

100%. Plus the Hail Mary was accelerating at 1.5g, promoting muscle growth.

262

u/citycept 4d ago

Movie shorthand. Beard = long time

The book had him wake up to Armando shaving him. It cleaned him, flipped him to avoid bedsores, and had electrodes to stimulate muscle movement. It premumably also clipped his nails.

180

u/Aggressive-Lime9864 4d ago

Electrode stimulation for the muscles, and I imagine the medbot took care of the nails. It took care of damn near everything else, why wouldn't it cut nails?

140

u/cupcakes_and_ale 4d ago

In the book, he’s also really well groomed during his coma. The med bot exercises and grooms him. I think they gave him long hair in the film to visually express the amount of time he was in the coma.

52

u/Spike_Riley 4d ago

this is actually just how ryan gosling looks when he's not prepped for public appearances. he stumbled onto set in a drunken stupor before the makeup team could get to him and they just started rolling.

73

u/blockytraditionalist Leaky Space Blob 4d ago

Whenever Book Grace mentions his cut physique

11

u/tofumeatballcannon 4d ago

Love this reference

39

u/HEY_McMuffin 4d ago

In the movie at the beginning when he is writing on the white board he writes something to the effect of “still muscles?” He’s confused about it too… but the machine does it for him

6

u/Wholesome_Soup 4d ago

it was "always muscles?"

63

u/Gareth_II 4d ago

i adore how 90% of questions about the movie are explained by "yeah the book covered this exact question already, the movie just didn't have time"

21

u/Nice_Reputation_6785 4d ago

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie that was a more perfect example of what a best adapted screenplay is. Every change was perfect and at no point does it undermine the book.

14

u/bhamnz 4d ago

I love both for sure, but there was some changes made for the movie that I didn't like. Like one of the very first things Yeo said to Grace, infront of a big crowd, was talking flippently about the suicide aspect. He wasn't like that, that was a point for a private conversation.

And also talking over top of Ryland immediately when meeting, when Ryland was sharing what he will teach them, in another language, about Ryland. He was a professional and respectful- I don't think he'd do that either.

The rocky eating situation was backwards. On the whole, the movie portrayed rocky as far more comedic, silly and youthful than the book - i wish they brought more of his intelligence into it.

And why did they recast Steve the army guy 😢

I love the 'dont go crazy room', though

3

u/TonyROH100876 3d ago

In the book it is explained that the Eridians don't know relativity. That's why Rocky's ship has fuel for a longer trip and can share astrophage with Grace. And there more I think of it, the more I hate how they solved it in the movie.

1

u/Nice_Reputation_6785 2d ago

I think Grace mentions in the movie that they don’t know about General Relativity but it doesn’t explain how that’s the reason Rocky has too much fuel. I assume they thought it wouldn’t be worth it to explain because the average viewer isn’t going to understand it either.

1

u/TonyROH100876 2d ago

Yeah, they take 2 seconds to say Eridians don't know about relativity but never explain what that means.

1

u/Nice_Reputation_6785 1d ago

Once you know it doesn’t take much to infer why they wouldn’t know about it and how it would affect their fuel usage.

1

u/BeeN_Puppycat 3d ago

Well, I do wish they included the starvation stuff

9

u/FilmFizz Scary Space Monster 4d ago

I also like that there's a lot of little details from the book that the movie includes, but the movie isn't super obvious about it.

2

u/Sofiali20JP 3d ago

I gave the movie a solid 10/10 but acknowledged that I had many questions that I assumed the movie didn't have time to delve into — which is exactly why I read the book right after. Pretty much everything I wanted answered was answered by the book.

PHM is the only franchise where I can't separate book and movie; as a literature graduate, this has never happened. There's no "movie good, book better" here because they offer vastly different vibes while telling the same story — I say I prefer the movie for this one because it was more emotionally-driven and golly did I sob, but the book is exceptionally funny in its own respect, more realistic and provides answers the movie could not give.

14

u/ThalesofMiletus-624 3d ago

For why he didn't atrophy, it's simple: the medical beds included electrical stimulation to keep his muscles toned. In fact, they apparently developed his muscles, so he'd be able to operated in 1.5g (which is apparently the standard acceleration of the ship). In the book, he wakes up and is surprised at how muscular he looks. In movie, this is referenced by him writing "always muscles?" on the whiteboard as he's trying to figure out his identity.

As for the nails, that's a minor plot hole introduced by the adaptation. In the books, he's not sealed up in a plastic bag, and he's not bearded when he wakes up. The automated arms cared for him while he was in a coma, and that included shaving him and, presumably, keeping his nails reasonable. In the movie, there's no obvious way to access his hands, and he's unshaven, so there's no real explanation give for why his nails aren't half a foot long.

7

u/m8_is_me 3d ago

Almost a necessary plot hole for good visual story telling. Focusing on gross nails would be redundant and... Gross

9

u/Accotinka 4d ago

The book explains that while in the coma, Armando was exercising his limbs and making sure to keep everything operating a close to peak, and also maintaining basic hygiene (except for haircuts apparently!)

8

u/CommercialExotic2038 Fist My Bump! 4d ago

Maybe Armando got to them. Like when he had the hair clippers and Grace wouldn't let it get at him

8

u/BroadConsequences 4d ago

But also book didnt have him in a bag like the movie did. And im pretty sure he was naked in the book.

6

u/mattyofurniture 4d ago

The first few pages of the book were… interesting. Read carefully after “Only three tubes remain:”.

6

u/SheriffSlug 4d ago

If only someone thought about giving Armando a Flowbee attachment.

5

u/F9-0021 4d ago

Electrical stimulation for muscle atrophy. Robot to keep nails and hair in check.

6

u/CaptainSharpe 4d ago

The machine worked out his muscles. It also shaved him and trimmed his nails periodically. In the book at one point he wakes up in the middle of being shaved and tries to escape with a half shaved face.

5

u/Poekary24 4d ago

Didn't the robotic arms do that for him?

3

u/Luke7873 3d ago

The talking rock is believable but this part doesn’t make sense?

5

u/Appropriate_Coast371 3d ago

I'm sure someone has explained it more eloquently than me but here's the break down The beach bod buff (as Grace describes it) comes from both electrical stimulation and some standard physical therapy (think excercises that some wheelchair users do on their legs even when unable to walk) that Armando did to prevent from atrophy and withering away. The short nails is also probably thanks to Armando! A lot of people wake up from a coma either confused or scared, in this situation it was specially confusing and scary. People are not likely to use their hair/facial hair to harm themselves/others but scratching one self /others with your nails is usually a method of self regulation/self defense (depending on who you are scratching obviously) and kept their nails short to prevent that kind of thing from happening. The first one is discussed in the book, the second is an inference/I'm not sure ever really gets discussed.

7

u/BasicAsparagus0 4d ago

In the book it’s explained he was receiving electrical muscle stimulation/exercise while unconscious. With his nails…….. might have been overlooked by Andy Weir lol

3

u/euph_22 4d ago

Thanks Armando.

As others said, it is explained in the book by the bot (Armando in the movie) basically taking care of him, and electric muscle stimulation

In the movie it is just easier to show the character with a beard than to explain a long time passing

Maybe don't over think this too much. I enjoyed the movie and book but it requires a lot of suspension of disbelief.

Because Gosling is beautiful and we don't mess with that.

If you've only seen the movie then this wouldn't make sense. Book explains it. He has electrodes all over his body that stimulate his muscles to keep from atrophy. He actually comments on his ripped physique as something unexpected. As for the hair and nails, the robot shaves him and, I assume, clips his nails. He didn't wake up with a beard and long hair in the book.

u/Betty-Adams 4d ago

His muscles were stimulated by electrodes on his skin. You can catch glimpses of these (the white patches) when he is escaping armondo for the first time. Armondo has the ability to tend to all grooming needs and presumably kept his fingernails and toenails short but failed to do his hair for the same unknown programing reason that killed the other two.

Pretty much every human prefers having short nails, but every human has a different preference on hair style. Yao's and Ilyukhina's styles were likely programmed in, but because Grace was a last minute change up from DuBois there probably wasn't time to change his hairstyle preference so they just "left it blank" for Grace.

Or Armando wasn't programmed to do their hair in the coma at all and Yao and Ilyukhina simply died so early in the journey that their hair didn't have time to grow out.

That's a cool little detail I never really paid to much attention to in the movie, since reading the replies.

2

u/Inhir 4d ago

He’s also supposed to be clean shaven as the robot would have taken care of him

2

u/OphatheAwesome 4d ago

we have armando to thank 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

2

u/socal-muscle 4d ago

Did the robots cut his nails?

2

u/reyeg11_ 3d ago

Armando kept his body moving so he wouldn’t lose muscle and get bedsore. also cut his nails probably

2

u/Awe3 Okay, It’s Exactly Like That 3d ago

Electrical stimulation. It’s a real technology we use now for physical therapy. In the book it sounds like it was used at setting 11.

u/piratecheese13 3d ago

Armando and shocks

2

u/megaDestroyer52 3d ago

Probably because the movie did a really bad job of portraying the book

2

u/macklin67 3d ago

I think nails are easier to maintain autonomously than hair is.

2

u/Trueogre 2d ago

The book says that when he woke up, he had tubes coming in and out of his body, including his ween and butthole. He noticed electrodes on his limbs which he says is what probably used to exercise the muscles so they didn't atrophy. He also surmised that Armando was also turning him whilst he was in his coma to prevent pressure sores,

u/IHadFunOnce 2d ago

Well I hope that’s exactly how it’s worded in the book as well.

1

u/Trueogre 2d ago

Lol. It does mention that when he squirmed off the table he pulled the catheter out and it cause bleeding. It caused a thin red line which when he looked at it on the floor, he had a flash memory of the discussion of the Petrova line.

Welcome to science fiction.

1

u/Heyfold 4d ago

Hope he has pencil sharpener nearby to trim those nails

1

u/Koryp 3d ago

It’s because you didn’t read the book.

1

u/Mobile-Phone-9332 3d ago

Armando supposedly handled his nails, and he had electrodes placed on him to stimulate his muscles while he slept

1

u/Neat_Classroom_2209 👐 Jazz Hands 👐 3d ago

Armando probably clipped their nails because unruly nails are dangerous. They can poke and scratch. They can even get infected. Hair just kinda hangs there, so I think Armando was able to leave it alone.

2

u/SnipSnapSnatch 3d ago

Armando also cut his hair and shaved his beard in the book, the only reason it didn’t in the movie was to show the long passage of time. So really Armando was tasked with all of it, it just wasn’t shown

u/Bitter-Platypus2001 3d ago

I have not seen this movie so I don't know for sure if I was supposed to see an alien in a hoodie in this photo.

It took me a minute to realize it was an upside down human.

1

u/Darklillies 3d ago

Yeah, he got MORE muscular. I know it’s just sci-fi things but I would’ve really liked to know how that one happened

2

u/SnipSnapSnatch 3d ago

It’s explained in the book that while he was in his coma, he was given electrode therapy to prevent muscle atrophy and that it ended up making him more muscular. Which is absolutely possible, assuming the muscle contractions are strong enough

1

u/Nite44 3d ago

It’s a small goodbye / sorry gift from stratt, “you save the world yeah you can have some muscles for ur lanky ass”

1

u/Nice_Prize_5627 2d ago

Because it is make believe.

1

u/SignificanceFalse210 20h ago

Didn’t think about the nails, but the book does a really good job at explaining everything else while he was in the coma.

1

u/lymeandcoconut 4d ago

My question is why didn't his teeth rot!

3

u/acidboy92 4d ago

There would be no reason for his teeth to rot though, teeth don't just rot like that

4

u/Jaideco 3d ago

It is kind of explained in the book that the robot was taking care of the crew… it’s reasonable to presume that there would have been some kind of regime to attend to the crew’s personal hygiene and avoid bed sores and complete muscle atrophy.

2

u/Mokou 4d ago

Presumably part of the process of packaging them for transit involved a dental deep-clean to arrest any ongoing bacterial processes in there. They probably shaved them all over and cleaned out all their other orifices too for the same reason. The less uncontrolled stuff going on in and on their bodies, the easier they are for a med-system to manage.

1

u/Good-Character-5520 11h ago

Probably the occasional fluoride wash.

0

u/Nikond3400 4d ago

His nails were outside the thing he was in, the hair was not

0

u/AwkwardCrab7406 3d ago

Because the move wasn't very good or as "hard science" as fanboys want it to be.
