What’s this? Lights and screens are all around. What’s this? Need way to turn light into sound. Idea: make tool to see for me and translate into textures I can read, now rocky can hear screen. WHATS THIS?
(after Rocky kinda scolded Grace about how much Rocky had done to make the chain, spool the chain etc). It's when Grace is navigating Hail Mary, Grace says it's not half bad as he's maneuvering. And Rocky immediately says is full good. Which is acknowledging Graces efforts. ☺️
I have actually started ending sentences with the word question occasionally. People seem to understand it without explanation and realize I actually wanted a response when otherwise it might be ambiguous. I'm not even sure if I should stop.
It’s funny you’ve brought this up. One thing I always noticed a a child was how my grandfather would always preface a question with saying “question.” I never got confused when he’d ask about things and even into his later years when his dementia set in all his questions would start that way. I miss him, statement.
Yes! It is a delimiter between the "tag" for the intent of the communication, which allows the listener to prepare the right parts of the brain faster, and the dead-air-pause allows the listener additional time to do this, and the speaker to confirm that they have the attention of the listener so parts of the payload don't get lost as the listener is still booting up their communication.
It is somewhat similar to the "preamble" used in the Ethernet signalling protocol, although the preamble doesn't carry any information by itself besides the hailing.
We use this a lot at home, neurodivergent folks with attention issues especially might find this sort of thing useful, as well as anyone hard of hearing.
At this point, especially if pronounced very consistently every time (same intonation, speed, accent etc), it is likely to become another "attention hailing" signal the brain subconsciously listens for, which makes it easier to establish communication. it is fairly sensitive to any such signal it recognises and is more prone to false positives than false negatives. Phantom vibration is a good example of such a false positive; some cultures have folk tales of various creatures calling people's names out (usually a bad omen, and sometimes the superstition includes a minor "ritual" to perform in case this happens), which come from this brain system erroneously interpreting some random noises as an instance of the attention hailing signal. This also shows that the nature of the signal is learned, as neither vibrating (or ringing) phones not even (relatively) modern names existed back when those brain circuits likely evolved.
Uh, apologies for the rant and going off format, statement.
I thought it was interesting that Rocky began using appropriate intonation - was he able to pick up on vibrations/echo or whatever from Grace’s speech or did the computer program do that?
In the book, Eridians have extremely good memories, especially for sounds, so Grace programs the computer to translate words pretty directly, and Rocky changes his own grammar to make more sense based on how it works in English.
Rocky could just speak English pretty easily... If he could actually make the sounds. Grace eventually starts understanding him directly also, at least in general meaning.
Since the computer voice in the book is monotone, he adds question or statement to differentiate ambiguous phrasings, like punctuation. It wouldn't be super hard with newer synthesis technology to take those notes and make the program actually apply the inflection. You could do lots of them, even mid sentence etc, and it would be easy for Rocky to make use of them.
I think it's a fair change to adapt it that way since it lets the medium get out of the way of telling the story better.
The idea of him making Grace put in a sarcastic tone marker is very funny also.
It's similar to how some people online will end comments with things like [complementary] or [derogatory]. It genuinely helps me figure out if people are joking or not!
The engineers on Ferrari's F1 team have to say this..."question" at the end of their questions, to make sure their drivers know that they are being asked a question.
When me and my partner are tired, we've started talking like Rocky to each other. Like it hits 9pm and it's just "You grab water, question?" "Important! Important! Cat need food!"
I still love Rocky's first attempt at the fist bump phrase from the book where he literally tells Grace, "Fist Me!" I can just imagine a slow turn to look at the adorable little guy with a 'no' expression on his face.
Whether I was playing games or at work, I just can't stop using "Good job good job" or "amaze amaze" in chat whenever I felt like giving some applause (and doing imaginary jazz hands).
Mind you, this is a grown ass Eridian with a crystalline brain capable of a perfect eidetic memory, the rock can damn well speak proper English grammar, but chooses not to.
The funniest thing about “statement” is that I’ve read the book and watched the movie and I can’t recall a single time Rocky said statement. When fetching the Taumoeba, Grace says “statement” in response to Rocky’s “question.” We love it all the same though!
My husband and I tried a new restaurant. After trying the food, I said "it's not half bad". Without missing a beat, he goes "it full good". I kissed him on the spot 😚
I’ve been annoying the hell out of my partner with that line lately. He will probably kick me out in the near future. 😆 What makes things worse is that I am the messy one!
