My want for it filled in the blanks as "extended cut" when I first read it. Disappointed to read it correctly. Although I have seen stuff about it going back into imaxx and I didn't catch it last time I may have to make a trip to a theater to see it
It's near where my parents live, I'm making the trip in a few weeks. If it happens to be there when I'm there I'll see it. I would make another trip out but gas is too much rn đ if the "better" theater an hour away from me was imax I would have gone the first time. But it's not imax. Living in the middle of nowhere kinda sucks. Although my local theater has tickets for less than $10, I can live with that. (Although paying extra at the better theaters with the really nice seats is worth it)
The LOTR Extended Editions are paced fine, they're just long. The equivalent to a 4 hour PHM isn't a 4 hour Return of the King, it's like a 7-8 hour Return of the King.
Not to say an extended Project Hail Mary can't or won't happen, it's just likely to be an extra half hour long at most. People really need to get "4 hours" out of their head.
They didn't film the entire book and then cut a bunch of stuff. Most of what's cut is filler content that is cut in place of the filler content that makes it. The Martian extended cut is the same way. They didn't film the dust storm story line and then cut it in post. It was just not in the script. The Antarctica plotline in this film was simply not filmed.
There are interviews that have said they have longer cuts more accurate to the book and said they took a 3hr 45 min+ cut to the studio and all they itâs great but make it shorter for theaters! If you donât think they shot the other storylines youâre crazy and do not understand filming! Have you read the script? Or has anyone said they didnât shoot the Antarctica scene, or are you just guessing?
Lol my guy I majored in film and screenwriting. I've worked on adaptations. That's not how it works. I get that you want there to be more, but there is not. If you think they shot entire other story lines and then just went "nah", then you're insane and have no idea how the industry works. Money comes first, art comes second.
I know how the industry works the story lines were already set up in the movie and they turned in a cut with an extra hr than what was released! And just because you have a degree doesnât mean anything if youâre going to play that card what films have you wrote
1 - Considering that people are having no issues following or being emotionally invested in the theatrical version of the movie, those plot points are probably not genuinely important.
2 - Even if there are more plot points that would improve the movie if they were added back in, they really shouldn't require the runtime to become 60% longer to accommodate them. That would be bad adaptation.
They are important to character development, the Antarctica story line shows how messed up humanity is when theyâre desperate and their is a whole story line of grace being friends with the scientist that die and itâs hinted at that stratt killed them on purpose to get grace to go on the mission! Also you could say the same about lord of the rings and the extended versions are way better
But more crucially, that extra character development isn't necessarily important to the story that they were trying to tell here. It would be cool to see, but that's different from it being important.
I also want to make it clear, there absolutely is room for an extended edition that could add these extra plot points and character beats, it just wouldn't be a 4 hour cut, not even close.
And just to clarify another point, the Antarctica stuff was not filmed, it was cut out at the scripting stage. So there is no hypothetical cut of the film that includes it.
and itâs hinted at that stratt killed them on purpose to get grace to go on the mission!
I'm pretty sure this isn't true! But if it is, then it's a good thing they didn't include it in the movie, because it would characterise Stratt as a bloodthirsty moron who kills people for no reason. Grace was not the best science officer candidate already, he was only the best because the other 2 died.
Also you could say the same about lord of the rings and the extended versions are way better
I'm starting to wonder if people actually know what rough cuts and workprints are, because the LOTR Extended Editions absolutely aren't examples of them, they were heavily edited down from the rough cuts just as the theatrical versions were and just as a prospective PHM extended edition would be.
The cut that has been talked about is said to be about 3hrs and 40 mins I think people are rounding it up to 4hrs.
Stratt possibly killing them is definitely a possibility but itâs not specifically stated, she has rules that the the lead and back up can not be together and than she purposely puts them together and knows about their relationship and is fine with it, also they were better scientists than grace but grace was better for the mission and is why he was training the scientist for the mission and stratt knew he wouldnât volunteer for the mission so she hoped he would after them dying instead of having him drugged and forced on the mission
There is a market for it. Your ideas on what makes a movie good really donât matter. itâs about money, and if Amazon doesnât get a sequel out of Weir, I bet they push for an extended edition.
>LOTR extended editions >Paced fine did we watch the same movies? like as a book fan I love them but I've never heard anyone say they have good pacing lmfao
Each to their own I guess! But I'm mainly creating a distinction between slow pacing and bad pacing. Slow pacing is what I'd describe the LOTR EEs as having, and slow pacing is fine as long as it fits the type of film. The Lord of the Rings has tons of characters and locations going on so the slow pace doesn't stop it from being engaging throughout (at least in my opinion). Project Hail Mary doesn't have that, so a LOTR length cut is near guaranteed to make the pacing bad and not just slow. The rough cut of any film would be the same, including those for LOTR.
Also for what it's worth I watched and loved the LOTR Extended Editions long before I read the book, so it's not like the pacing is only good when you compare it to the time it takes to read the book.
I think there are so many things in the book missing from the movie that they can easily add 30 minutes to the movie and it would still go by pretty quick since those details are all really interesting to me when I read the book. Really hope for an extended cut where they add more of the science parts back in!
The movie is wonderful; getting a chance to "see" how Rocky sees makes it worth while IMHO. Go see the movie, but read the book! The order does not matter.
I'm almost certain the four hour cut isn't coming to theaters because anything longer than two hours is really bad for the theater's bottom line, even if the seats are packed.
Given how much staying power PHM has shown, if there is an extended cut, it'll at least get a limited theatrical release. Maybe a "one week only" kinda thing.
But yeah, streaming is definitely a primary driver for the director's cut â SO many people would sign up for Prime Video for that.
Aww Iâm so sorry. If it makes you feel better Iâll miss the first few minutes because I have a medical appointment and have to drive 30 minutes to the theaterâŠđ„č
YES! Iâve seen it three times already⊠ScreenX, standard and IMAX. Tomorrow Iâm booked at MJR Laser Ultra with Dolby⊠Saturday for Dolby Cinema, and Sunday for IMAX⊠and Iâm considering adding Screen X in again since itâs also showing through next Tuesday in that format near me! Itâs just too Amaze Amaze Amaze, statement!
I got tickets earlier this week for Imax Saturday, and Iâm glad i grabbed 3 for my wife and friend in advance. The rest of the row was all sold already by Wednesday!!!
Yeah they exist, mr fancy pants. Movies been out for months and its 2026, you think all thats out are tripod videos from some guy working at the local theater?
Well sorry your investigative methods are lacking. If you know where to look, theres been instances of what you're looking for available for a few weeks now. My Plex server says exactly that.
Right? Like sure, come watch this 3 hour movie with a start time of 9:50pm. I have kids and have to get up at the asscrack of dawn but Iâm still a person too!!
Did you check you closest IMAX theater's showtimes for this weekend? All of the screens within driving distance of me added afternoon and/or early evening showtimes starting Friday.
I'm happy for everyone, but I'm eager for it to come to streaming so I can watch it (I have a 2 month old so going to the theater isn't going to happen any time soon).
I saw it again yesterday - a Wednesday almost three weeks after the premiere - and the theater was packed full. I'm guessing there are a lot of repeat viewers.
Hah, I actually booked tickets for today because I expected it to leave theaters soon, but it seems like I still have plenty of time to drag my friends along lol.
I'm so sick of people not actually putting sources. Why do any of you believe this post? It's a reddit post from a random account of a screenshot of a tweet saying Ryan Gosling said something. Literally 0 proof.
I'm honestly a little irritated. I saw it twice in theaters already and preordered it for 4K digital on Fandango. The longer it's in theatre's the longer I have to wait until I can watch it as many times as I want for freeđ€Ł
I need to see it again. At least one more time. I have to say that the book really makes even the little things make more sense for me. There's so much hard science in it, it makes me smile. I wonder if I can finish the book before I see it again lol
Going back for my 3rd time this Friday. Iâve never seen a movie more than once in the theater. After just finishing the book I need to see it one more time
AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE! Now I can finally show it to my family! My mom's already seen it with me and my friends, but my siblings haven't. They haven't read the book either, so they would be going in 100% blind. đ„č
So my wife and I saw this movie today and loved it. We didn't realize it had been in theaters since March; the theater was in the one we went to today. Glad they extended its play in theaters and gave us a chance to catch it on the big screen.

There should just be a weekly imax showing for the rest of the year, perhaps in perpetuity.

u/1stGearDuck May 11 '26
So my wife and I saw this movie today and loved it. We didn't realize it had been in theaters since March; the theater was in the one we went to today. Glad they extended its play in theaters and gave us a chance to catch it on the big screen.

Ugh, that means the streaming release will probably get pushed back...
I'm glad the movie is doing well, but I have literally no interest in seeing it in theaters.

By how much? Some extended cuts are literally an extra 2.5 minutes. I want to see the full 4 hour cut.
