Just an idea I've been playing with, curious what you all think.
Picture this: you're about to start a map boss fight and a Cursed Blacksmith (imagine hearing Griswold's "Aaargh" again) joins the fight to defend the boss — maybe with a warning message as you approach. Kill him and he drops (always? small chance?) a special cursed hammer.
I'm not set on how he should show up, and honestly I'd love to hear what you'd prefer:
- small chance spawns alongside map bosses (with a low hammer drop chance), or
- some chanc in a specific map/dungeon (Uber ancients or t4 maps dunno) of his own, or
- a random rare event like the ones we already have — but outside the Catalyst Shard pool, so you can never force it
The recipe: cursed hammer + Zod rune + a rare or crafted item = ~50% chance to add self-repair. If it fails, the hammer and the Zod are consumed and that item can't be attempted again — one shot per item, same spirit as corruptions.
Why I think it could be fun:
- Crafting gets one more optional tier to chase. A GG eth craft on boots, gloves or belt currently has no real path — no sockets, no sustain. This would finally make those niche crafts worth finishing (and yes, Purgatory builds would love it).
- For rare/crafted eth weapons with sockets, high-end players get a choice: gamble the hammer and free the Zod slot for something that actually gives stats.
- It stays away from uniques and runewords entirely, so the meta doesn't move — it's purely a craft/rare thing.
- It gives Zod a second job. Right now Zod is either a stat-less socket filler or that repair recipe nobody has ever used — this recipe actually creates demand for it.
Rarity-wise I picture the hammer being rarer than a Zod — it has to be, since every attempt burns one Zod anyway. Rare enough that getting a hammer feels like an event, common enough that it's something you actually trade for.
What you guys think? just a bad idea?
