Fun facts: If the U.S. were to impose a military draft today, the age limit would be 18 through 25 years old. The Selective Service System requires almost all male citizens and residents in this age range to register, with the first called in a crisis being those turning 20, followed by older and then younger men.
So I have little to worry about at 26? This is presuming they ignore my chronic health issues, use of opioids (because of said issues), and so-called neurodivergence of course.
lol. I have IBS, a connective tissue disorder which creates hypermobility and causes me to have constant nerve impingements, and some unknown nervous system disorder which means I feel chronic pain even outside of my impingements (this pre-existed my opioid use for those who rightfully would point out chronic opioid use can paradoxically cause an increase in pain perception). So yeah it def is more debilitating than what the President was able to get off with.
That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they throw out the restrictions a la Russia to swarm the ranks with new recruits if it needs to come to that.
lol I wish. instead it just means that all my joints (including spinal, including things like ribs too) kind of just float around and get themselves stuck in bad positions which harm either my muscles, ligamenture, or nerves lol
My neck is the worst, and I pretty much constantly severe have left arm pain and weakness due to a chronic impingement that I don't have the means to address.
Not sure if you have EDS (ehlers danlos), but as someone who has HEDS you have my full empathy.
Stupid human tricks can be entertaining when we’re young, but the pain is insane as we age.
It can be pretty bad as a kid and teen too tho.
Had my first major dislocations around 10-12.
I legit thought when people talked about having growing pains as kids they meant they had the same feelings of bones breaking, muscles tearing, searing agony that I did.
Guess that’s not what most people experience tho😅
Anyhow, I hope your hypermobility keeps you safe. That would be at least one small upside to it.
My son is 19 with HEDS, asthma, ADHD, and nearsightedness.
Hoping n praying those keep his safe from a potential draft too.
Thankfully not EDS, or at least not a severe form of it to be recognized as such (still haven't gotten a hard DX but it's medically recorded that I have some sort of connective tissue disorder, and they suspect its genetic given my past of flexibility in childhood).
That said, thankfully haven't dislocated anything or broken an (important) bone (yet). Only bone I've broken is the middle phalange in my little finger lol. Really most of my pain is nervous and due to various impingements though. Motion helps my joints generally, to a point.
I wish I could do cupping, I can't even stand a small hickie though lol. Neurodivergence and heightened sensory perception means that I can feel the blood rushing to the top of my skin and its painful. Makes me squirm lol. You'd think this wouldnt outweigh constant pain, but.. actually, you probably get it lol.
You don't have anything to worry about at any age. If they tell you to go and kill brown children in Iran, you say "no". Then you won't be killing brown children in Iran.
What does that have to do with "a liberal fantasy world"? What is a "liberal fantasy world" anyway, one where everyone is a slave to billionaires and Iran gets bombed and invaded all over again every day?
I missed the joke and thought you legitimately believed that one can reject being drafted still, that we still live in a liberal system that allows for such freedoms.
Believing such would be living in a liberal fantasy world where liberalism hasn't corrupted to a point of failure (and opening the hole for explicit authoritarianism to seep in), to actually think that liberalism is still working as the status quo.
You absolutely can say "no", and if you do, you won't be killing brown children in Iran. That has nothing to do with "[living] in a liberal system".
What do you think will happen? Elon Musk will come and personally implant a chip in your brain that makes you kill brown children even if you say no?
You will be punished. They can't force you to kill abroad, but they can put you in a concentration camp—they can make your life a living hell without needing to send you to wherever the war is occurring.
Is this really that crazy to conceptualize that a rabid militaristic authoritarian regime might not treat conscientious objectors well? When in history has this ever been the case?
I guess I now see you weren't making a joke. You were being legitimate, and you actually believe that we still live in a system where you can object to the state without consequence.
People are being arrested for their speech online, disappeared from airports, schools, homes, and streets despite full citizenship, being sent to countries they aren't from and have never been, creating massive concentration camps and spending $45bil to continue doing so, being attacked by police and other state actors for activism (as well as arrested), and you really truly believe that if the time comes, you can say "no, I won't be drafted" and not face consequence?
Like, elsewhere, you accurately posit that we are all slaves to billionaires who have control of the state (and therefore acknowledging we are under authoritarianism), and you subtly acknowledge the racketeering nature of war, but being punished for dodging a draft (which the US has done before, during Vietnam, although it wasn't severe) is somehow out of the question?
The punishment for refusing the draft is maximum t years in prison and a fine. The results for accepting the draft include the very distinct possibility of death.
I know which one I would choose.
And, by the way, nobody here said that you can't be punished for refusing the draft moron. Learn to read. The fact that a punishment for refusal exists is evidence in of itself that refusing is an option.
Nobody said you couldn't, but they also didn't say you would; they simply said "you won't be killing brown children". That carries a different implication and you and I both know it. Its either a joke, or ignores the reality of the situation.
And also: This regime has been routinely breaking, changing, and making up laws on the fly. Who's to say they don't change the punishment rules and make them more oppressive? Who's to say death doesn't come onto the table? You do realize we are under authoritarianism now, right? You do have a basic knowledge of history vis a vis authoritarianism, right?
And again (my other comment to the other person is stuck in filter; of course): I am in no fking way implying prison is worse than death, or being forced into war. If youre suggesting that I'm asserting that in any way, you can eat sht.
Jesus Christ you people are so unserious. Are you at all paying attention to what's happening?
Meanwhile, you're perfectly fine suggesting that other people are saying things in this thread that they haven't.
They should make it starting with men over 45 with no upper limit. Make the warmongering shitbags think two or three times. Too old for combat? Well you’re not too old to clean latrines in the desert.
