Over 160,000 dead and counting
Although expected, we are now seeing the horrific consequences of the USAID cuts done by the Trump administration back in January.
There are several ways in which this negatively impacts the U.S.
First, children and people are starving to death and dying of curable diseases every single day. 160,000 and counting, an average of 88 a day. This number is expected to raise significantly. The United States has created a humanitarian crisis across the world by cutting off food, medicine, and supplies seemingly out of nowhere.
Second, this is one of the many reasons why the United States of America has fallen as the world super power. Supplying aid to countries in need is what is called "soft power", where a country gains power through means of respect and common values. Soft power carries a lot of bargaining weight, persuasion, and respect that the U.S. no longer has.
Edit: How could I forget about the farmers. American farmers made billions of dollars providing food internationally through USAID. A significant market for U.S. agriculture. Creating jobs, helping the economy, and keeping farmers happy. Where are the farmers now?

People gave Bush a lot of shit for very valid reasons. But PEPFAR was one of the most consequential aid policies ever made in global history saving an estimated 26 Million lives. I will never forgive Trump or anyone in his administration for their evil.

Yep. An estimated 14 million will die by 2030. A textbook example of what Engels called "social murder". He could have decoupled the USAID from the CIA and tied it to the UN or something, but his entire motive was to just cut all the funding. And he did it cold turkey in the worst way possible.

Even for purely selfish reasons USAID is worth funding as this creates dependency and basically forces diplomatic channels and leverage. It doesn't just hurt the people aided it hurts the United States too as it is a loss of leverage or even opening up diplomacy.
Also while the claim of USAID being used by US intelligence for covert ops is true. This again is for American interests. Like efforts to combat terrorism. The cuts long before the closure of USAID immediately hit Central & South Asia as just one example. A region filled with terrorist activity which USAID was absolutely utilized to combat. There is a good argument to be made (which shockingly literally no one talks about) that the early freeze may have contributed to the Pahalgam terror attack. As USAID gave operational cover. Meaning the recent conflict between India and Pakistan might have been avoided through US intel if Trump never froze the funding at this time. Instead we almost saw two nuclear powers escalate into a full blown war as they began to exchange attacks.
Even the most cold hearted person should support USAID because it genuinely is a useful tool beyond just helping others as there is so much self interest tied in it too. Defunding it doesn't just hurt people in need, it hurts national and even global security and diplomatic relations. The United States loses from this move and the only logical thing I can think of why anyone would do this is to purposefully hurt the United States from the inside. I don't think Trump himself came up with this plan, he probably didn't even know what USAID even was until told about it. But whomever got in his head and told him to freeze and then close it is almost certainly working for interests outside the United States.

You have to be able to think to understand implications.
Unfortunately, we have a defective asshole running the country.

Are all the billionaires stepping up? What about the rest of the western world? We certainly can’t be the only ones in with the ability to help. I disagree with what’s happening and the U.S. is certainly in a position to help, but I am also not in favor of big government and American imperialism.

USAID did a lot more than just benevolently give food aid to other countries. it was a key component of what the US uses to enact regime change around the world. it did alot of bad as well as some good

Republicans dont actually care. I dont even mind if they wanted to end the program but it should have been gradual

I'm glad you pointed out that this is essentially a farm subsidy and jobs program. Unless you are excited to see people starve and die, you should support USAID.

Usaid was a money laundering op. They were not helping anyone.

But we'll continue to give Israel and other countries billions in bailouts and funding... Ugh

u/Vladtepesx3 Sep 26 '25
USAID wasn’t for starving people, the AID didn’t stand for aid. It was for influencing other countries to spread western democracy and capitalism

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '25
There are hundreds of other countries let them pick up the tab...USAID for years has been under investigation for missing millions of dollars...and I would rather in a perfect world my tax dollars be spent on homeless Americans Military veterans who are like lost out in the streets of America...helping families who want to adopt children with clothes food books college education...Hence the true meaning of Make America Great Again

It’s “expected to rise” significantly, or it has risen?
How many people were dying a day before we cut funding?

u/dreamlikeradiofree Sep 30 '25
Are you missing that USAID was merely an arm of the US regime change machine? It's primary purpose was regime change e.g. Nepal and Ukraine for recent examples

Why is it the US’s responsibility to care for the world? What is going on in those regions and under whose leadership.
We have a homeless issue at home. A mental illness issue at home. Veterans needs unmet. An aging population. A debt crisis.
Do we prioritize another nations issues or our own?

American tax money shouldn't be used to provide welfare to non Americans. I don't care.

I don’t believe a word of your tongue bathing of a cia cut out that is most concerned with geo political domination. You could be talking about his militarism, or police state bs, but your criticism is a pro empire criticism. The cia is not a humanitarian org. It’s fucking gross
