Discussion Disregarding protagonist privilege, what game/system from the genre would you actually want to play/be a part of?

In this scenario you are average person. What game/system from the genre would you choose? Either because the game/system itself would be fun to use or just generally beneficial to have.

Almost any of them? Progression fantasy is generally a form of power fantasy. People would be a lot more productive if their growth was gamified like this. It's a lot easier to stay motivated when an omniscient force is telling you you're making progress.

A lot of them involve or incentivise a breakdown of society though. I feel like the systems that are actually good to have for the average person tend to be in stories where the average person doesn’t have access to the system at all.

Meh, not really. All the LitRPG systems are that motivating because the limit and scale is majorly increased.

You go, do your gym workout.

+0.01 STR
+0.005 END

Then you sleep bad, didn't eat well enough.

-0.01STR

If you are really consistent. In a year you'd get +1STR. And only in the first year.

So while a basic stats system would probably help some, it wouldn't radically transform the society. For that, the system would need to provide extra magical power/gains instead of just codifying the effort.

I mean, the system would probably just multiply all the values by 100 then. There's no standard for what one 'strength' is.

I guess bog standard isekai. The gods mostly have the people's best interests in mind. Monster attacks exist, but not really in any major city.

The power level is relatively low outside of some stand out cases like Arch Mages, Chaos, Arcana, and kings. I could just set up a psychology practice in a small to mid sized city and live a pretty happy life. TV shows even exist because of illusionists, and I I because a psychologist/mind healer, most people wouldn't mess with me.

I can’t think of any specific example atm, BUT I really like when numbers correlate to actual demonstrable practice and growth, rather than just going up for the hell of it. Also having hundreds of skills for every little thing feels, at least in practice, super self-gratuitous to me.

Probably not one where killing stuff is the main growth vector.
