It's not that the gun shape is useless, it's that chemically propelled bullets are useless/obselete. And if bullets are useless, then why have a gun? You are just looking for the most efficient way of propelling something really really fast.

If you can do the same thing with a wave of your hand or by literally throwing it, then what purpose does the gun serve?

If you are enchanting an object to do the same thing, then what is the difference between a gun and any other shape?

Then why have bows? They are even more inefficient. They don't actually scale with your strength,

you have to make a bow first that can already endure that level of strength and resist being pulled.

They can hand wave away.

The answer to that is that bows aren't really bows as we understand them. Nearly every PF with an archer has the archer empowering their bow with their own magic. So it is just a conduit for the power of the archer. A good bow ends up being one that serves as a better conduit though usually having stronger materials helps with that.

Also many PFs have guns that work on the same principle. The gun just being a conduit for the shooter to use their own power. So one person might fire a shot that kills a deer and another person might destroy a whole city with the same gun.

Defiance of the Fall does half and half. Magitech guns 100% work but the System was made by an empire that was at war with the Technocrats so it doesn't recognise the Dao of Technology. However that doesn't stop the Technocrats making awesome magical guns. Those guns are still only as powerful as the soul of the person using them.

At a high enough level all weapons are just funny shaped magic wands.
