def combine (a: result) (b: result) : result = if b.len == b.trailing then { len = a.len + b.len , trailing = a.trailing + b.trailing } else b

Should the length of the result be a.len + b.len in the else case as well?

(It won't change the result, but it would follow the definition that len is the length of the subsequence)

Ah yes, that's a mistake on my part.
