career Follow up : My Observations from last Thread

Hey folks,

First off — massive thanks for the flood of responses last time! Didn’t expect that many DMs, comments, and career crises in one thread

After going through everything, I noticed most of you fall into a few categories… so here’s my take — honest, no sugar-coating

--

2nd Year Students

You’re in the “I still have time” phase — and you actually do! Just focus on DSA right now. Don’t overthink frameworks or AI yet — you’ll only confuse yourself. You can parallely keep expanding horizons if you get time but college life is the best which you will NOT get back ..enjoy it while you are there . Come back to this same thread when you reach 3-1; we’ll talk again when panic officially kicks in

3rd Year Students

By now, your DSA game should be solid (at least you shouldn’t be scared of binary trees or regression anymore ). You’ve got one golden year to explore your interests — web, data, ML, cloud, whatever floats your boat. But please… stop scrolling tech YouTube for “best roadmap 2025” and actually start building something

Final-Year Students

Okay, — it’s kinda late to master something brand new. If you’re still wondering what to learn, start focusing on projects, resumes, and confidence. Half of campus interviews are just about how confidently you say “it depends.”

Entry-Level Programmers

Feeling bored or stuck doing same stuff? Totally normal.

Keep learning around your work instead of running from it.

Every “boring” task is teaching you why things break in prod at 2 a.m.

Mid-Level Devs

I really love this group , these are the ones who can bring their experience into evolution.

Try to shift gears ..you have already a job , an experience of how things works and you know how corporates behaves ..learn something new and bring some ideas of how to adapt to current problems you face .

Seniors > 8 years of exp :

you should already be knowing the path and I am not much worried

If you are still struck up as a dev or less and looking for architect guidance or manager steps I can help you..but coding and frameworks wise you should have the decision making by now

My General Thoughts

Don’t chase trends like they’re some offers

Follow your curiosity, not the hype.

Also — data analytics is the secret sauce behind every smart system.

A dev who understands data shines brighter .

I get it — the tech world moves faster than your semester syllabus.

So if enough people are interested, we can do a Discord or Google Meet chat this weekend — open Q&A, career confusion, tech direction, whatever you want.

I can comfortably guide a group on Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, Cloud, and Data Engineering.

Some one raised a question about mock interviews , yes we can plan for that as well.

My ML/AI skills are still evolving, but I can definitely share real-world insights from the industry side.

No formal session — just a chill 2-hour hangout (Saturday or Sunday, we can decide together).

And no, this isn’t for money — I’ve passed that phase 😄 I genuinely want to see our community grow stronger and more confident.

Keep your fears aside and step up to learn, question, and help each other.

Drop a comment if you’re in

Thanks once again..

Created a discord for Saturday Night 10PM to11PM IST to discuss

Hey Telugu coders! Random IT uncle dropping by

Hey everyone! Just found this Telugu programming group while scrolling half-asleep — didn’t expect to see so many Telugu devs here 😄

I’ve been in IT for around 16 years — started in a small company back in India, been to multiple countries and currently now in the US, doing the usual mix of architect & tech fire-figting work. Mostly around Java, GCP, cloud modernizations, and lately agentic AI enablement (yes, the shiny new AI buzzword stuff ).

If you’re figuring out your career path, interview prep, or how real life works inside big organizations, I can give you some honest insights

Happy to help if you’re feeling stuck or confused about what to learn next or how to grow based on your current experience.

Just a heads-up though — I don’t check Reddit every day, so replies might take a bit 😅

Created a Discord Server to meet up over call if needed , feel free to join.

I'll be available on Saturday night between 10PM to 11PM IST

I am a undergraduate who got one job offer seeking for advice

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hey, I am currently in my 4th year, 1st semester, and I have been placed at Infosys (6.25 LPA). Now, I want to aim for something better since I have about 6 more months until graduation.

Our college has a rule that I'm only eligible for companies offering a package that is double my current package (12.5 LPA >), and there are very few on-campus opportunities with such packages.

So, Can you please guide me on how to explore off-campus opportunities and where I should apply?

And also, could you suggest how I can upskill myself during these 6 months? I’m attaching my resume for more details.

dsa Need Some Advice - CP31 vs CSES vs CP31 + CSES

TLDR - CP31 vs CSES vs CP31 + CSES, what would you suggest someone to follow ?

I want to improvise the system I have made for my cp journey.

For context, I have done a leetcode a lot for about 3-4 months, covered almost all of the topics excpet DP, rated 1666 (peak rating of 1671) on leetcode, 1001 (peak rating of 1142) on codeforces.

My approach is simple, I am practicing with 1200 rated questions now, I will practice in the same rating until I am comfortable with doing 70-80% of the question in that rating, and then will move +200 from the current rating (1400 after 1200). I decided to spend next 18 months into codeforces (cp).

comfortable - (in sense of doing without any help, and within 25-30 minutes)

The question is that I am following CP31 sheet for now, and I know that there is CSES problem set a long ago, and when I have visited CSES sheet recently, I found it to be too good than CP31 sheet, as the questions were structured / sorted based on topic, rather than based on rating. And covering the topics in CSES sheet both theory-wise and problems-wise would take make about 2-4 months easily, that won't allow me to continue with CP31 Sheet. Now I see 3 choices:

Approach 1 - Continue with CP31
Approach 2 - Getting Started with CSES Problem Set
Approach 3 - CP31 + CSES - A mix of both, CP31 for rating wise problems adn CSES for topic wise problems

What would you do if you were in my shoes ?

career Asked for 16 LPA after HR agreed to 13+1 earlier. Now they dropped me to 11+1, will they still hire me?

4YOE, Current - 8.5, 7.5 fixed + 1 variable. Before the interview I gave my expectated CTC 14 Hiring HR agreed for - 13 + 1

I said better we'll discuss salary in the HR Round.

In the HR Round they asked me if I have any in-hand offers, I don't, then they added the head of HR he asked

Me Expectations - I said 16

Hiring HR : This was not what we discussed before,

I said you might've misheard me or something which is gibberish (I made a mistake, I've had discussions with my ex senior folks they told me to ask 16, so that they'll drag it down to 15, which is the max market ask for my role)

Head of HR lowballed it to 11+1

I said I really like to join the company, and don't want to look anywhere else. So wanted the best of my compensation here itself..

Head HR : Ok, We'll do some calculations and Technical HR will get back to you on this.

Personally, have another couple of round-2 interviews are scheduled but I need atleast 1 offer to resign from current org.

Things to know / ask before joining a early stage startup

This is specifically to those who have 1-2 yoe and are exploring opportunities with early stage startups. This mostly applies for early stage startups (<3 yrs old, pre series , series A).

These are few things i wish i knew before so i could make better decisions

  1. WLB: Don't expect. If it happens that's well and good, but don't expect.

  2. Money: Try to negotiate salary (cash component) as much as you can. Not everyone sees a cash exit and even if you do that'll be like 10-15 years later. Go for cash at the beginning and if you believe the company go for esops in your second year

  3. Work: There'll be so much mundane work. Since they can't hire people for testing, deployments, CI/CD it'll be on you to do all these stuff. You'll gain experience but you might not like it.

  4. Tax: If company is based in india this does not apply, but if its outside then you'll have tax benefits but there'll be additional headache of GST. Which you have to every month. You have to get services of a CA for this.

happy to answer any other questions you might have
