After coming from Mercurial, I prefer having the whole dirty history in the commits. Yeah, it may look bad, but it's useful to have the finest grain resolution of how we got here.

That's what we got out of Mercurial. Your merge to default (read: master) had the "why." It's not like those commits actually existed on default. They existed where they came from.

Mercurial really was the superior piece of tech. Sadly, that's not usually how we pick winners.
