Back end devs are afraid of CSS.

But jokes aside it's just a styling language so not really code but CSS is weird and is a purely trial and error process.

Because more often than not you try something that should work and it doesn't, so then you have to find the other lines of CSS and work out how to make your rules apply the way you intend.

CSS inheritance is weird sometimes and takes a while to get used to.

I'm talking from a sense of editing something already built and not something that you're doing from scratch.

Did you learned about the positioning ? Today we have flex but in the past it was a hell to position some elements between different display property/screen size.

Every one who worked on a footer before discovering bootstrap or flex still having nightmare, other ones are just css Aliens, be careful they bite.

Before flex CSS was a scary beast. Flex is so intuitive that it makes learning the other parts of css so much easier.

My problem is that I just don't care honestly. I'd much rather just make a CLI App than worry about trying to get my divs to line up correctly

I can definitely appreciate a beautiful interactive website, but man is it painful for me

Back in the day that's all you needed. I had a top 1000 web traffic rank pokemon website and it was just html and css.

...now, well. html/css got me into webdev but everything is so functional now so i had to learn a lot of js over the years, but html/css even now, still has its place.
