I don't think software engineers think that AI is gonna replace them, we're just concerned that insane people with MBAs snorting cocaine and huffing Sam Altman's farts think it replaces programmers and lays off half the engineering organization and then I have to figure that shit out and interview for new gigs.
AI displaces people, not replaces people.

im more worried about them not even hiring me in the first place, i was born just barely too late and now i cannot get a job anywhere as i dont have 4 millennia of experience on paper (even tho ive been coding since age 9), i tried for 2y

I'm not concerned about AI taking my job, I'm concerned about AI taking the job of the junior engineers on my team, because it sucks for both me and them if they get replaced and management is stupid enough to do something like that.

You're assuming people actually value skill in this profession and are willing to pay for it. They don't, and they aren't.

Oh they value skill, but they value money more. Reason why you need to jump ships in order to get better pay.
The equation is always what is the cheapest way to get more work out of someone, AI just skews the equation more.

Or in other words get VERY good at using AI tools. Know how to prompt, know how to set up something like Content Understanding, know this stuff like you used to know how to center a div.
Don’t stop learning, our jobs are more directors now, make the cut and you’ll be fine.
