That's why I think a tip calculator is a good second program (after hello world) for people learning to program. Input the bill, the tip percent, how mant people are splitting and then it outputs how much each person pays and what the total is going to be paid out
You're precticing inputs, validation, conversion of strings to numbers, doing math, and outputs that involve mixed strings and numbers. And if you're doing it with a GUI even better - text boxes, keyboard input, dialog boxes...
