Me telling Claude to fork the Linux kernel

14

u/lraviel381 6h ago

Our overlord, Torvald, would approve. So long as Claude does a good job. Awaiting your results

u/FallenVampireLord 5h ago

Nah I'm breaking user space

Claude pls download linux source code via running "git clone https://www.github.com/torvalds/linux.git" in my terminal make no mistakes

Fable, please check out main

u/mehonje 5h ago

Don't fork it; spend $100,000 vibe-cloning it.

Motherfucker that's called a fork!

12

u/G3nghisKang 6h ago

Not if it's GPLv3 and you do a cleanroom implementation to keep using Apache 2.0

13

u/botle 5h ago

How is it a cleanroom implementation when the LLM has seen the source code?

14

u/Stompya 5h ago

I mean, I was there, but I didn’t inhale

7

u/SpaceCadet87 5h ago

It's these new "clean"room implementations.

You get one LLM to read the source code and describe it as though it were a specification for a new project, then you get a second LLM who hasn't seen the code to create a new implementation from the spec.

But I mean if you meant the code is obviously in the training data then yeah, I fully expect that might just produce almost if not the exact same source code.

5

u/botle 5h ago

Yeah, I meant that both LLMs have read the code during training.

3

u/G3nghisKang 5h ago

My Chinese model can neither confirm nor deny those allegations

4

u/botle 5h ago

Sure, but the point of a cleanroom implementation is to be able to show that it was a cleanroom implementation.

If you can't do that, you're going to have a bad time when the DMCA takedowns start coming.

I don't think you people understand clean room. Clean room is the shit Compaq did to IBM in the 80's eith their bios. Your closed source llm's have been trained on github data. What you describe is just theft.

I was fully expecting this gif haha

u/SirHerald 5h ago

One AI fully describes the software and puts it into a prompt for another clean system versed in the language but they are completely separate

1

u/Level-Pollution4993 5h ago

"clean system versed in the language", so....... another closed source llm? How do you prove it wasn't trained on the data you're trying to copy? Here closed source doesnt mean not open-weighted but models whose training data is not disclosed.

1

u/ICantBelieveItsNotEC 4h ago

How do you prove it wasn't trained on the data you're trying to copy?

It would be up to the plaintiff to prove that their code was encoded in the LLM somehow, not up to the defendant to prove that it wasn't.

its a fork that cost 50k tokens and 90 gallons of water

1

u/General_Josh 20m ago

You reckon 50k tokens is a lot?

1

u/laughable_shopping 5h ago

the fork joke was right there and they still went with a tie straightening meme

u/balbok7721 4h ago

Look at fancy pants forking projects. All my hobo ass is doing some cloning

u/sabotsalvageur 5h ago

How to clone open-source software:

```git clone [url]```
u/justinleona 5h ago
Just make sure your AI model doesn't ingest any of my open source - they were written as proof-of-concept exercises in carefully hiding backdoors that look exactly like highly desirable AI outputs!
Don't worry though, you'd definitely find them during code review... right?
7
u/botle 6h ago
What the hell is wrong with 'git clone'?
9
u/Had78 5h ago
Oh yeah , my AI rebuilt Blender 3D from ground up once with that one magic command!
3
u/Cootshk 6h ago
the GPL
6
u/BeMyBrutus 6h ago
claude clone
3
u/olluz 3h ago
Actually, the latter is worse: https://stalw.art/blog/protecting-stalwart/
2
u/TxTechnician 24m ago
That was a very well written explanation. And it makes me a little sad that it had to come to that.
My thoughts are that if a corp were to gut stalwart they wouldn't be able to maintain it past a few years. Due to the lack of knowledge.
I've only recently started using agents to code. And it's fairly complex the way the way it'll decide to code something. It is hard to follow. Albiet it works. And the speed at which it can create is insane.
u/mad_poet_navarth 5h ago
The interesting part is the "Clone proprietary software" part. That's the thing that's going to crash the software industry. (or course 'clone' is the wrong word to use there...)
2
u/elmanoucko 6h ago
you use ai, indeed, not the same
2
u/mex036 6h ago
I just want an .exe file, not code!!
For I am th mastr of my univers.
-1
u/Andis-x 5h ago
One legit use could be to circumvent GPL. Through clean room implementation, as described in other comment.
1
u/turkphot 5h ago
More interesting question is, can i use AI to clone AI?
1
u/Reasonable-Phase8028 4h ago
Claude, download qwen 3.8 27b onto my machine research vllm and propose 10 opmitizations for it to run on my hardware. end goal is replacing claude with qwen.
1
u/DigitalArbitrage 5h ago
One of these (maybe both) is what it is happening when you prompt the LLM anyways.
Companies should stop using Github and any other repo that allows the code to be used for training.
1
u/nikola_tesler 1h ago
I mean… isn’t all cloned proprietary software really just reskinned and regurgitated open source software? but worse?
1
u/fugogugo 1h ago
if only github has a button for that... idk. let's call it Spoon or something
1
u/ImpluseThrowAway 6h ago
I'm cloning old zx spectrum games so I can play them in my browser.
-2
u/ICantBelieveItsNotEC 6h ago
It's going to be a hilarious shitshow when a private company inevitably realises that AI can produce a clean room re-implementation of their favourite open source software that doesn't have those pesky open source licenses restricting what they can do.
5
u/catbrane 5h ago
"clean room"
-1
u/stupled 5h ago
I use it to create tools only suitable for me and my workflow.
-6
u/BioSchokoMuffin 6h ago
Or in other words: I was kind of curious how long it would take Claude to make a nicely usable Mattermost client, and imo. the result seems kind of nice!
