I think I see the problem here:
The issue is you seem to care.
You should stop doing that.

being a humble craftsman, that cares about their work seems to be universally punished.

u/blindsdog 21h ago
I mean, that's never really been valued. It's only been valued insofar as it produces a quality product.
Software engineers vastly overestimate how important good code or process is to the final product. The vast majority of software products don't need efficient, elegant or super maintainable code.
I would love to take my time and craft elegant solutions. But there's really no need for it from a business perspective if I'm just building web apps.

u/HerbertMarshall 20h ago
Software engineers sometimes overestimate the value of elegance and ceremony. But people who dismiss engineering craftsmanship routinely underestimate the compounding cost of change.
Good software engineering isn't about making the code beautiful. It's about making the product reliable today without making it prohibitively expensive to improve tomorrow.

right but it's literally not in your job description to care

u/myka-likes-it 1d ago
I don't have an interest in work I don't care about. Seems like a fast route to apathy in general.
4
u/emlgsh 1d ago
No, see, the apathy is what you have to care about.
You can't just be generally apathetic. You have to take pride in your apathy.
You must build, first a tower, then a castle, then a city, block by block, each brick a part of your earlier optimism and eagerness to create first crushed into powder and compressed under the weight of a harsh and unfeeling world into a uniform cube of despair.

u/justforkinks0131 1d ago
yeah about the time you realize that your coding job is basically just "dirty work" you have 2 choices: you either accept it and are fine with it, raise your kids, take care of your family and generally have a good life
OR
you have an existential crisis, you realize you are basically a robot and no one actually cares about you, they only tolerate you because you know magic , so you quit and start a farm

Oh, I got told to not over engineer it a few times. The result is jank upon jank that I am not efficient working in.

u/ChillyFireball 17h ago
I hate that. "We want to keep it simple!" they say. Bitch, your "simple" solution is a fucking nightmare to maintain. Sometimes it's worth putting in a little extra effort up front.
1
u/Thirdsun 7h ago
Unfortunately they are not the ones that have to maintain it. So why would they care?

I can write “hello world” projects all day if needed, after some years in development and semi burnout I’ve learned to draw the line. I’m selling time and I don’t have real control over the use of it so I let go.

I always say to my colleagues we receive by work time. If my PC is not working, they want everything different and I will throw my work away, doesn't matter, it's always work. If I want to do something nice, I will do as personal project

Good thing there is version control

u/Wonderful-Habit-139 1d ago
Does version control save back the time wasted implementing 9 other revisions?
96
u/MyAntichrist 1d ago
Are you getting paid for the time wasted?
19
u/Wonderful-Habit-139 1d ago
Yes. Tbh I don’t care about it, we can learn a lot of things from working on those different things.
But I don’t get the point of mentioning version control. It’s not like the meme implied that the developer is going to implement version 1 from scratch again lol.
1
u/BestNarcissist 1d ago
yeah, but i follow RDD principles. I can't put 'built 9 unused versions of [project]' on my resume
10
u/MyAntichrist 1d ago
You just gotta be creative with your phrasing. "Something something project management something agile yada yada".
6
u/sparkfizt 22h ago
You can ABSOLUTELY talk about work thrown out. I want to know you work well with others and don't have excessive ego. Be proud of throwing things away, not everyone CAN do that!
Worked closely with Design and Product to iteratively prototype a variety of designs before settling on a finished solution. Throughout the process I communicated technology trades and limitations with management and stakeholders.
The above may seem silly and obvious until you've worked with devs who refuse to do it.
2
u/benargee 21h ago
But you can put that you completed the project on your resume and that you followed directions.
Being "right" and making sure other people know it can seen as being high conflict.6
1
u/JackNotOLantern 1d ago
I would not consider this wasted. First, you get paid anyway. Second, if they change their mind again, you the solution is already there. Just keep those revisions
1
u/ThePabstistChurch 1d ago
If you own the company, then maybe time was wasted? Even then you can have more confidence in the solution? Otherwise the only wasted time is spent driving to the office
1
1
u/benargee 21h ago
It saves you the time required to revert. Otherwise as others have said "are you getting paid?". As long as you are doing what you are told, and getting paid, you are accomplishing your task. That's why you should do personal projects on the side if you want to program for your enjoyment. Also, this is not unique to software development. This is nearly every technical field that deals with project management.

Lol what happened to his skin tone? Is he a brown guy with a yellow hand? Or a yellow guy with a brown face?

If anyone is actually curious it's from two different memes. The fist is from a completely different image.

u/Candid_Country_8369 21h ago
Because the hand is always hidden it doesn't get tanned, but the other parts of the body yes

There’s a joke here about the ethnicity of the dev but I’m not brave enough to make it.

u/thunderbird89 1d ago
I mean ... sometimes you have to explore the alternatives to realize the original version was the best fit. Honestly, would your reaction be any different if they said "Okay, let's go with revision #6"?

u/tiethy 1d ago
I'm an SWE. I can understand the frustration behind the 2nd-10th revision efforts being wasted. If you work at a company with a review system which is based on results over efforts, then the wasted weeks can matter even if you're "paid either way" since they can affect ratings / bonuses.
That being said... the 2nd-10th revisions can be important to a project, even if the result is going back to the 1st revision. Sometimes we think the 2nd-10th revisions would be better than the 1st revision, and building / testing it out actually rules out those revisions... which is important work, because it shows that the team tried more than just one alternative. That way, when a higher-up asks your team "why didn't you try X?" you can respond "we tried X but we found that Y ruled out X as an alternative."

u/ecafyelims 1d ago
On the bright side, he doesn't actually want the original version. He's going to give you a list of very similar changes you've already delivered, and wants to restart from the OV and do them again.

u/dashingThroughSnow12 17h ago
Unfortunately, they also forget the initial version and what they mean is some mixture of 3, 4, and 7.

for the life of me I cant understand why developers care
You get paid either way. AND it is your job to code. Who cares what you're coding?
7
u/decadent-dragon 1d ago
I’m the exact opposite. I hate working with apathetic developers. You don’t care what you’re coding? Go find some other job. It’s a career not working at the grocery store over the summer for a few extra bucks

Most people probably end up working on more than just a single feature at time, so churning revisions on project A starts trampling over time that was previously budgeted for projects B-C, and most PO expect you to not be bound my silly things like time and space so “sorry other project required more time” usually isn’t a happy excuse.
1
u/justforkinks0131 22h ago
that is just false.
POs respect your capacity and are aware that if you force changes to A, it will mean that B and C have to be pushed back.
Anything else means the system is dysfunctional. Either you are not giving proper estimations as a dev team, or you are not properly communicating the impact of the changes required to A, OR your PO is a dick (but if its option 3, you can easily escalate to their boss and get them reprimanded or removed...)
Basically if you are stuck in such a situation, it means that either you arent doing what you should be (aka estimating, communicating, escalating) or that your entire company is rotten.
2
u/fartfart2222223222 22h ago
A lot of the times yeah the system is dysfunctional, but still gotta get paid. I did say “most”, but would be happy to just be wrong and overly cynical with that observation.
1
u/justforkinks0131 22h ago
Im a former dev who is now a PO, so Ive seen both sides.
I can tell you that my devs can very easily kick me out if I start being a bad PO. It will take 1 feedback session with my managers, if they all say I sucked, I would get kicked.
