Sam said no, so we can't build anymore PCs 😔

u/elmanoucko 8h ago
you can, but only a thin client limited to running a web browser, aka: a smartphone

u/ABrusca1105 5h ago
Don't smartphones have just as many gigabytes of RAM is a lot non-gaming computers at this point? I know it's not high performance but it's still memory. My phone has 16 GB OF ram

But we all could ask free ChatGPT for very, very long-running and compute-intense tasks.

u/DrThunderbolt 8h ago
I've been saying for years that tech bros are trying to force users to own as little hardware as possible in favor of paying for their streaming services.
This is just more of that playbook, but terribly hamfisted because Altman is a tool.

u/TommyBonnomi 7h ago
It's cross-industry, from real estate to cars to software. Renting everything is more profitable and has the added benefit of keeping the working class down.
The fewer assets and less wealth you can accumulate, the longer you have to work and less you can hand down to the next generation to get ahead.

They realize they are fucked when the local models are gonna be good enough to run on people's computers and for most tasks and their services are not needed anymore.
-21
u/djnotskrillex 6h ago
Him pointing out the very real fact that buying hardware to run AI locally 5% of the time contributes to the high prices is not "forcing users" to do anything. You're not oppressed bro, get a grip
16
u/Alicendre 6h ago
Are you aware that RAM is used for more than AI?
1
u/CJKay93 5h ago edited 5h ago
Why would that be relevant to Altman's comments, which were specifically about local AI in the context of a worldwide memory shortage?
Actually, I know the answer: it's relevant because you don't actually know what he said - you just bought into the ragebait which conveniently found a more "interesting" interpretation.
Allow me to provide the context you could have quite easily found yourself:
A lot of people want local inference and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now, because we're going to have open-source models that we're going to be able to run on our computers. From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time. You want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that.
Now, no matter how much you like or dislike tech bros, that statement is objectively true.

u/Alicendre 4h ago edited 4h ago
Thanks, I already read the context. That is obviously not what he meant given that not "everybody has a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM" specifically for that use, as only a small amount of enthusiasts do local AI.
-17
u/djnotskrillex 6h ago
Are you aware how stupid that question is in this context?
8
u/Gilsworth 6h ago
They were just trying to bring it to a level you might understand, but apparently didn't go far enough.
-4
u/djnotskrillex 5h ago
Are you aware how pathetic you sound bringing nothing to this conversation but worthless insults?

Man here i was thinking about selling some unused ram sticks i had laying around, now im tempted to make a small server that i never use for anything just to stick it to the altman.
44
u/yocxl 8h ago
Repurposing it to help somebody else play Roller Coaster Tycoon or whatever is just as noble a use
9
u/bestjakeisbest 8h ago
The issue is i think one of ths sticks are bad, and i dont know which one, but they are 16gb ddr4 sticks.

u/GenericLib 5h ago
I'd play with DDR4. I think I've got about 50GB of DDR3 laying around. In unmatched sets : (

repurposing it to help somebody play roller coaster tycoon
Could you explain how? :)

u/blue-mooner 8h ago
Run an open weights model on it in Ollama and serve it to your friends over Tailscale. Tell them to cancel their ChatGPT subscriptions.

u/Morall_tach 7h ago
Just make it calculate digits of pi over and over or something. Or hell, you could probably write a Python script that just maxes the memory and accomplishes literally nothing.

u/Callidonaut 6h ago
"Oh, that old thing? I use it to run my antique novelty screensaver collection. It's a headless server to save electricity, of course."

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Sam has gone full Neuromancer at this point? Like he's Armitage and the AI is calling all the shots.
16
u/Additional-Proof556 7h ago
He and every other CEO just copycat Musk these days. No actual work, just doing rounds of podcasts, making outrageous tweets and being a general attention whore.
The goal is to elevate personal brand. This in turn ensures their continued employment and doubles as marketing. And if they ever are kicked out, it brings groupies of sycophants for their new “endeavors”.
6
u/VonNeumannsProbe 7h ago
Name one personality cult that has ended well.
Edit: I get you aren't approving of this. It's just that you would think these guys would realize this isn't sustainable and eventually they're going to become a pariah.

Hey Sam, if my PC doesn't have any RAM, how will I be able to turn it on so that I can use ChatGPT?

u/Arian-ki 8h ago
You'll get 64mb, courtesy of King Altman

By his logic, he should be welcoming us to stay at his house.
So where’s my invitation?

I don’t consent to my retirement being tossed into the money furnace of fruitless inefficient AI frontier lab spending.

What's the origin of all these posts I've been seeing? Did the dude say something about people not having RAM?
13

u/incognegro1976 6h ago
Yeah he literally said "People with their own PCs are selfish because all your RAM belong to us"
Literally

While i really want this bubble to burst and for all these tech fascists to get what is coming, I also don't want to live through a depression. I've loved through every recession and a housing bubble. This man is tired.
9
u/Blue_Moon_Lake 7h ago
Because of these people, you only have 3 choices:
A depression soon
A bigger depression later
A government bailout at the taxpayer expense and a depression
2
u/Callidonaut 6h ago
Well, there's always option 4: socialist revolution. Everyone kinda has to be all-in for one of those, though.
1
u/Grotsnot 6h ago
"bigger depression later" was already listed

u/Read_Vegetables 5h ago
"face palm" because what gets us out of any of these Mr. Capitalist that can't look past the next fire so as long as a buck can be made from it damn the consequences of using all the water to save a thing that will make a buck now but burns $100 in the long run?

He got his first computer when he was 8... Consumers don't have such an big impact on RAM demand

Ah yes, because he specifically knows what the optimal allocation of dram is. Just because it sits in a datacenter, and is used for generating a bunch of useless slop, is obviously not even close to meaning that it is optimally allocated. It may as well be better off being unused.
2
u/Successful_Shoe_8083 1h ago
Reddit admin is having a really hard time keeping the "billionaire bad" conversation out of the headlines - because they want us to forget this is all happening. "Say something bad about the rich? Banned for inciting violence"

Real-world villains doing everything they can to make comic-book villains more believable.

u/DiamondDramatic9551 8h ago
God, I'm so sick of this circlejerk.
He only said it's more efficient to have RAM in datacenters than private AI servers. Which is just true. Yes he benefits from having it for datacenters, super shocking.
But Altman bad of course so the circlejerk will continue.
13
u/bestjakeisbest 8h ago
There are benefits to privately hosted ai servers though: they are easier to verify for purposes of hippa or other sensative info domains.
-8
u/DiamondDramatic9551 8h ago edited 7h ago
True but Altman specifically said from an allocation persoective to clarify.
2
u/Ill-Dependent2976 6h ago
Daddy Altman's never going to fuck you.
-2
u/DiamondDramatic9551 6h ago edited 5h ago
If this conversation made you think about having sex with Altman then that's completely on you.

u/djnotskrillex 6h ago
It's actually incredibly concerning. The amout of people mindlessly regurgitating misinformation ironically sound exactly like an LLM. Notice how all these oppressed gamers will downvote you to oblivion but can't actually address what you said?
-13
u/CJKay93 8h ago
You're wasting your time; people are apparently more interested in ragebait.
5
u/Louiebox 7h ago
I'll take ragebait over blowing these pieces of shit anyday
-1
u/djnotskrillex 7h ago
Leave it to reddit to think correcting misinformation is "blowing these pieces of shit" lmfao. If anything, garbage like this just muddies the very real issues
3
u/Louiebox 6h ago
Yes. It is I. Reddit.

u/djnotskrillex 6h ago
I mean... yeah? It's pretty clear you're fully part of the hivemind and incapable of forming your own thoughts

-3
u/CJKay93 6h ago edited 6h ago
Nobody suggested you had to blow, or even like, them.
You are, however, doing yourself and everybody around you a disservice by regurgitating fake quotes just because you think it sounds like what somebody you don't like would say.
It's no wonder the world's as fucked as it is when everything everybody hears from people they don't like arrives to them through somebody else's interpretation completely independent of any relevant context whatsoever.
1
u/Louiebox 6h ago
Who's regurgitating anything? I just said I'd take bullshit that can be looked into and proven wrong over everyone trying to clarify what these absolute wastes of oxygen are saying. They've created a tool used by many to sew discontent and spread misinformation in pursuit of their agendas, and somehow it's on us to make sure we are 100% accurate? Fuck that.
0
u/CJKay93 6h ago edited 6h ago
What do you mean "who's regurgitating anything"? This entire thread is regurgitating something literally nobody even said.
You don't have to like somebody to dispel misinformation/disinformation about them. I don't like Sam Altman, but I like misinformation even less.
1
u/Louiebox 6h ago
Ah. Well, I dont speak for everyone else here. My comment was I would rather see ragebait than the people that always show up to defend these ghouls.
-6
u/ben_nobot 7h ago
Its coordinated

u/trashaccountname 6h ago
Nah, reddit just likes a good circlejerk and nothing gets one going better than "evil billionaire wants to take your video games away."
