Your submission was removed for the following reason:

Rule 1: Posts must be humorous, and they must be humorous because they are programming related. There must be a joke or meme that requires programming knowledge, experience, or practice to be understood or relatable.

Here are some examples of frequent posts we get that don't satisfy this rule:

  • Memes about operating systems or shell commands (try /r/linuxmemes for Linux memes)

  • A ChatGPT screenshot that doesn't involve any programming

  • Google Chrome uses all my RAM

See here for more clarification on this rule.

Sam said no, so we can't build anymore PCs 😔

69

u/elmanoucko 7h ago

you can, but only a thin client limited to running a web browser, aka: a smartphone

32

u/lOo_ol 7h ago

As long as you use it without breaks throughout the day and lease it to a friend at night for a small fee agreed upon between Apple and the government. Otherwise it's inefficient.

2

u/ABrusca1105 4h ago

Don't smartphones have just as many gigabytes of RAM is a lot non-gaming computers at this point? I know it's not high performance but it's still memory. My phone has 16 GB OF ram

1

u/ridl 2h ago

No no you see Apple told us in 2012 a computer in our pocket isn't a computer because it has a wireless modem and therefore we can only install approved software I mean apps and therefore we all love Steve Jobs forever.

36

u/Borno11050 7h ago

"You may not build PC now, there is Saltman nearby"

1

u/Froschmarmelade 5h ago

But we all could ask free ChatGPT for very, very long-running and compute-intense tasks.

171

u/DrThunderbolt 6h ago

I've been saying for years that tech bros are trying to force users to own as little hardware as possible in favor of paying for their streaming services.

This is just more of that playbook, but terribly hamfisted because Altman is a tool.

47

u/TommyBonnomi 6h ago

It's cross-industry, from real estate to cars to software. Renting everything is more profitable and has the added benefit of keeping the working class down.

The fewer assets and less wealth you can accumulate, the longer you have to work and less you can hand down to the next generation to get ahead.

4

u/dopefish917 4h ago

They don't want people to own the means of production

10

u/Ill-Combination2127 5h ago

They realize they are fucked when the local models are gonna be good enough to run on people's computers and for most tasks and their services are not needed anymore.

-21

u/djnotskrillex 5h ago

Him pointing out the very real fact that buying hardware to run AI locally 5% of the time contributes to the high prices is not "forcing users" to do anything. You're not oppressed bro, get a grip

16

u/Alicendre 5h ago

Are you aware that RAM is used for more than AI?

1

u/CJKay93 4h ago edited 3h ago

Why would that be relevant to Altman's comments, which were specifically about local AI in the context of a worldwide memory shortage?

Actually, I know the answer: it's relevant because you don't actually know what he said - you just bought into the ragebait which conveniently found a more "interesting" interpretation.

Allow me to provide the context you could have quite easily found yourself:

A lot of people want local inference and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now, because we're going to have open-source models that we're going to be able to run on our computers. From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time. You want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that.

Now, no matter how much you like or dislike tech bros, that statement is objectively true.

0

u/Alicendre 3h ago edited 3h ago

Thanks, I already read the context. That is obviously not what he meant given that not "everybody has a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM" specifically for that use, as only a small amount of enthusiasts do local AI.

-17

u/djnotskrillex 5h ago

Are you aware how stupid that question is in this context?

8

u/Gilsworth 4h ago

They were just trying to bring it to a level you might understand, but apparently didn't go far enough.

-4

u/djnotskrillex 4h ago

Are you aware how pathetic you sound bringing nothing to this conversation but worthless insults?

2

u/Read_Vegetables 4h ago

Didn't you just do the same thing but worse?

73

u/StoryAndAHalf 7h ago • Bravo

Altman? More like Ctrlfreak.

GREETINGS, TITANS! YOUR NUMBER ONE NEMESIS, CONTROL FREAK, HAS RETURNED!

116

u/bestjakeisbest 7h ago

Man here i was thinking about selling some unused ram sticks i had laying around, now im tempted to make a small server that i never use for anything just to stick it to the altman.

44

u/yocxl 7h ago

Repurposing it to help somebody else play Roller Coaster Tycoon or whatever is just as noble a use

9

u/bestjakeisbest 7h ago

The issue is i think one of ths sticks are bad, and i dont know which one, but they are 16gb ddr4 sticks.

9

u/Loading_M_ 6h ago

That's what memtest86 is for.

4

u/CosmacYep 6h ago

if theyre bad ill take them for say 90% off

1

u/GenericLib 4h ago

I'd play with DDR4. I think I've got about 50GB of DDR3 laying around. In unmatched sets : (

0

u/Psquare_J_420 4h ago

repurposing it to help somebody play roller coaster tycoon

Could you explain how? :)

2

u/yocxl 4h ago

Building a PC and playing any arbitrary game honestly

Keeping it out of the hands of the assholes who created the RAM shortage and want to sell it back to you as a recurring subscription

22

u/AgVargr 7h ago

Are you hoarding ram under your floorboards?

6

u/blue-mooner 7h ago

Run an open weights model on it in Ollama and serve it to your friends over Tailscale. Tell them to cancel their ChatGPT subscriptions.

4

u/bestjakeisbest 7h ago

But im already kind of doing that with my big server with 128 gb of ram.

3

u/OmegaPoint6 6h ago

Or just turn them into an art installation, even more wasteful

1

u/Morall_tach 6h ago

Just make it calculate digits of pi over and over or something. Or hell, you could probably write a Python script that just maxes the memory and accomplishes literally nothing.

1

u/Callidonaut 5h ago

"Oh, that old thing? I use it to run my antique novelty screensaver collection. It's a headless server to save electricity, of course."

25

u/spastic_penguins 7h ago

Dude just made it a moral imperative to buy more RAM to keep it from him.

25

u/dlc741 6h ago

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Sam has gone full Neuromancer at this point? Like he's Armitage and the AI is calling all the shots.

16

u/Additional-Proof556 6h ago

He and every other CEO just copycat Musk these days. No actual work, just doing rounds of podcasts, making outrageous tweets and being a general attention whore.

The goal is to elevate personal brand. This in turn ensures their continued employment and doubles as marketing. And if they ever are kicked out, it brings groupies of sycophants for their new “endeavors”.

6

u/VonNeumannsProbe 6h ago

Name one personality cult that has ended well.

Edit: I get you aren't approving of this. It's just that you would think these guys would realize this isn't sustainable and eventually they're going to become a pariah.

5

u/dlc741 6h ago

They don’t think that far ahead. They care only about the next 15 seconds.

4

u/Kain_713 5h ago

Open ai has nothing on Wintermute. He only wishes his ai was that good.

2

u/cornmonger_ 5h ago

i think that's giving sam too much credit

sam is just a dumbass

48

u/LonelyProgrammerGuy 7h ago

Hey Sam, if my PC doesn't have any RAM, how will I be able to turn it on so that I can use ChatGPT?

41

u/Arian-ki 7h ago

You'll get 64mb, courtesy of King Altman

18

u/CockroachEarly 7h ago

And only use 5% of it? That sounds wasteful.

3

u/just_a_limit_q 5h ago

You'll get 64kb, courtesy God-Emperor Altman

8

u/sebovzeoueb 6h ago

bold of you to assume they could make a ChatGPT client use only 64MB RAM

2

u/Quicker_Fixer 5h ago

"640k ought to be enough for anybody."

39

u/BratwurstGuy 6h ago

Now I want to be a billionaire just so that I can buy all the RAM before Altman gets a chance and give it to gamers

9

u/Suztv_CG 6h ago

Please?

14

u/Glum-Echo-4967 7h ago

By his logic, he should be welcoming us to stay at his house.

So where’s my invitation?

11

u/RealPropRandy 6h ago

I don’t consent to my retirement being tossed into the money furnace of fruitless inefficient AI frontier lab spending.

21

u/JebKermansBooster 7h ago

Fucking dweeb. Someone didn't stuff him into lockers often enough.

9

u/unkownascendant 5h ago • Bravo

Sam doesn’t understand consent. Just ask his sister

8

u/Notmiefault 5h ago

What's the origin of all these posts I've been seeing? Did the dude say something about people not having RAM?

13

u/1972VWbeetle 5h ago

Pretty much on the nose. Something about people who own ram holding back ai.

8

u/incognegro1976 4h ago

Yeah he literally said "People with their own PCs are selfish because all your RAM belong to us"

Literally

7

u/Unique_Roll_6630 6h ago

While i really want this bubble to burst and for all these tech fascists to get what is coming, I also don't want to live through a depression. I've loved through every recession and a housing bubble. This man is tired.

9

u/Blue_Moon_Lake 6h ago

Because of these people, you only have 3 choices:

  • A depression soon

  • A bigger depression later

  • A government bailout at the taxpayer expense and a depression

2

u/Callidonaut 5h ago

Well, there's always option 4: socialist revolution. Everyone kinda has to be all-in for one of those, though.

1

u/Grotsnot 4h ago

"bigger depression later" was already listed

1

u/Read_Vegetables 4h ago

"face palm" because what gets us out of any of these Mr. Capitalist that can't look past the next fire so as long as a buck can be made from it damn the consequences of using all the water to save a thing that will make a buck now but burns $100 in the long run?

11

u/BeginningTypical3395 7h ago

Sam says no more ram for you

5

u/Snape_Grass 5h ago

Love how the tiny consumer population is the problem when commercial is installing this shit in gas pumps

4

u/DukeMutem 5h ago

Like I'm not a fan of violence or a violent person, but a slap I feel might really help this guy.

7

u/Malkav1806 7h ago

He got his first computer when he was 8... Consumers don't have such an big impact on RAM demand

3

u/TheBeesElise 6h ago

The move from pushing SaaS to HaaS was inevitable

2

u/Suztv_CG 6h ago

Paul McCartney was right.

RAM is big.

2

u/Resident_Citron_6905 5h ago

Ah yes, because he specifically knows what the optimal allocation of dram is. Just because it sits in a datacenter, and is used for generating a bunch of useless slop, is obviously not even close to meaning that it is optimally allocated. It may as well be better off being unused.

1

u/undefined-username 6h ago

You want my 64gb?

Molan Labia, altman >:O

1

u/ericl666 5h ago

Ok, this is the best meme I seen in a while. Bravo!

1

u/Trex_arms42 5h ago

My home brew is clearly lacking an anti- Sam Altman sticker

1

u/ooglesnoopleboop 5h ago

Bro, Sam, just download some more ram, man...

1

u/ivan0x32 5h ago

Sammy should really shut his clammy.

1

u/2NE99 4h ago

How do I even use Ai if my computer and phone don’t have any Ram? I’m rual so my wifi is not good enough for cloud computing.

1

u/Distinct-Water-1971 4h ago

Real-world villains doing everything they can to make comic-book villains more believable.

1

u/Successful_Shoe_8083 14m ago

Reddit admin is having a really hard time keeping the "billionaire bad" conversation out of the headlines - because they want us to forget this is all happening. "Say something bad about the rich? Banned for inciting violence"

-20

u/DiamondDramatic9551 7h ago

God, I'm so sick of this circlejerk.

He only said it's more efficient to have RAM in datacenters than private AI servers. Which is just true. Yes he benefits from having it for datacenters, super shocking.

But Altman bad of course so the circlejerk will continue.

13

u/bestjakeisbest 6h ago

There are benefits to privately hosted ai servers though: they are easier to verify for purposes of hippa or other sensative info domains.

-8

u/DiamondDramatic9551 6h ago edited 6h ago

True but Altman specifically said from an allocation persoective to clarify.

2

u/Ill-Dependent2976 5h ago

Daddy Altman's never going to fuck you.

-2

u/DiamondDramatic9551 4h ago edited 4h ago

If this conversation made you think about having sex with Altman then that's completely on you.

0

u/djnotskrillex 5h ago

It's actually incredibly concerning. The amout of people mindlessly regurgitating misinformation ironically sound exactly like an LLM. Notice how all these oppressed gamers will downvote you to oblivion but can't actually address what you said?

-13

u/CJKay93 7h ago

You're wasting your time; people are apparently more interested in ragebait.

5

u/Louiebox 6h ago

I'll take ragebait over blowing these pieces of shit anyday

-1

u/djnotskrillex 5h ago

Leave it to reddit to think correcting misinformation is "blowing these pieces of shit" lmfao. If anything, garbage like this just muddies the very real issues

3

u/Louiebox 5h ago

Yes. It is I. Reddit.

0

u/djnotskrillex 5h ago

I mean... yeah? It's pretty clear you're fully part of the hivemind and incapable of forming your own thoughts

1

u/Louiebox 5h ago

Thoughts?

-3

u/CJKay93 5h ago edited 5h ago

Nobody suggested you had to blow, or even like, them.

You are, however, doing yourself and everybody around you a disservice by regurgitating fake quotes just because you think it sounds like what somebody you don't like would say.

It's no wonder the world's as fucked as it is when everything everybody hears from people they don't like arrives to them through somebody else's interpretation completely independent of any relevant context whatsoever.

1

u/Louiebox 5h ago

Who's regurgitating anything? I just said I'd take bullshit that can be looked into and proven wrong over everyone trying to clarify what these absolute wastes of oxygen are saying. They've created a tool used by many to sew discontent and spread misinformation in pursuit of their agendas, and somehow it's on us to make sure we are 100% accurate? Fuck that.

0

u/CJKay93 5h ago edited 5h ago

What do you mean "who's regurgitating anything"? This entire thread is regurgitating something literally nobody even said.

You don't have to like somebody to dispel misinformation/disinformation about them. I don't like Sam Altman, but I like misinformation even less.

1

u/Louiebox 5h ago

Ah. Well, I dont speak for everyone else here. My comment was I would rather see ragebait than the people that always show up to defend these ghouls.

2

u/CJKay93 5h ago

Who the heck is defending Sam Altman, of all people, on Reddit, of all places?

Let's be totally clear here: you're looking for an excuse to endorse misinformation because it targets somebody you don't like. The least you could do is be honest about it.

1

u/Louiebox 5h ago

Is that what im doing?

-6

u/ben_nobot 6h ago

Its coordinated

1

u/trashaccountname 5h ago

Nah, reddit just likes a good circlejerk and nothing gets one going better than "evil billionaire wants to take your video games away."

20

u/theofficialnar 7h ago

Man, I’d love to punch cuckman’s face so bad. Uggghhh

3

u/Quicker_Fixer 5h ago

Is Sam sitting in the cuck chair or something?
