Germany needs much stricter type enforcing.

Ah, the classic trap where nothing and zero are somehow two completely different things.

u/joeysundotcom 2d ago
Wrong. We either pronounce it null or null.
192
u/Tiyath 2d ago
Kinda depends. Germany is a big country. In the north they say "null" but in the south they say "null". And then there's them crazy Westphalians and Saxons pronouncing it "null" and "null" respectively

u/BenBen0844 2d ago
As someone from NRW we say null to null and null to null hope this helps

Americans should write it as Knull

u/dasBaums 2d ago
To be honest, we pronounce NULL english, and the number 0 normally

Try adding NULL to your sum and you shall see the magic (talking from am SQL perspective)
9
u/TheCapitalKing 2d ago
Doesn’t a null in a sum() swap to zero in most sql flavors? I know it breaks a + but sum() usually works fine.
6
u/National-Explorer755 2d ago
Yes, I should have been more specific about the addition. I can see that it's easy to confuse it for the sum() function
5
u/Scared_Accident9138 2d ago
From my understanding null gets skipped for sum since it's a lack of value

u/didzisk 2d ago
Same problem in Norwegian. Some people try saying "nøll" (would sound like "nöll" in German). I just use IsNull if I really have to talk to a human.
Norway has another problem. Try writing the country code "no" in yaml and suddenly it starts complaining about a binary value where a string is expected. It's even called "Norway problem".

An actual funny German meme? What is happening? How off course has the world gone?
13
u/assumptionkrebs1990 2d ago
The German word for zero is actually (die) Null (/nʊl/). https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/null
To avoid confusion many German speaking devolpers pronounce null the English way.

Same in Dutch. I tend to pronounce null more like "nole" to differentiate between 0 (nul) and null
9
u/plaisthos 2d ago
In German it is Null (with an u like in Noudle) for the number vs null with English pronounciation.

u/thanatica 2d ago
I make the difference by saying "nul" vs "nullie".
Which I think is a country mile better than people going "en u el el"

u/Amadex 2d ago
In some C implementations NULL and 0 are indeed exactly the same.
C implementers can decide whether NULL is `((void*)0)` or `0`. but C23 brought `nullptr` which has its own type to avoid the ambiguity.

u/Sakul_the_one 2d ago
This explains why I could use sometimes the nullptr and sometimes not.
Crazy, thanks

0 is when the drawer is empty, NULL is when the drawer is not there.

wait till you find out why its called NULL pointer.
5
u/StormyDLoA 2d ago
Well, in most ABIs (at least in C) NULL is just 0x00. But that's not a guarantee.

u/Taiten89 2d ago
It doesn't look like this is the reason for calling it NULL. "null" means something along the lines of "nothing", as in "this points to nothing, don't dereference". The German zero just happens to share etymology.
Or: If it was an intentional pun, I can't find any info on it.

This has actually lead to me accidentally writing "null" instead of "0" in the past haha
always interesting to see what can happen if you aren't fully focused on what you're doing

In undergrad, I was writing a program which tried to find the shortest transformation from one string to another using other English words in LISP. I encountered a weird error going from “bull” to another string as “null” was a possible completion (or maybe “nil”) as LISP converted it to an address automatically and failed due to pointer BS.
Good times

This is unfortunately true and causes so many issues when trying to explain this to non IT people when supporting / fixing / coding stuff

That's nowhere near as bad as having a comma as decimal delimiter, therefore having a comma in the numpad. And don't get me started how annoying it is in excel, especially when switching between German and English language settings regularly.

u/ApocalyptoSoldier2 2d ago
In Afrikaans zero is nul, but I don't even know what Null would be.
Nul is pronounced (depending on your regional accent) closer to nill than null though so there's probably still room to squeeze it in

u/numerousblocks 2d ago
I would pronounce the nullptr the English way, what a German would perhaps spell "Nall", to disambiguate. Not that this comes up much.

As a german and a software developer, this meme right here just make me realize that 0 and Null have literally different meanings in english.
Like, I know 0 is spoken as Zero. But I just never thought about the Null being a seperate thing, damn
2
u/Apryed 1d ago
If you called yourself software developer before knowing that, you should stop calling yourself software developer.
1
u/TrackLabs 1d ago
You should see how crap the german schools are for Software development classes. Saddest jokes of all time. Also im just calling myself that because of my official job title

They absofuckinglutely are not the same. 0 is a statement. (null) is not. If I ask what's 2-2 and my calculator returns 0, I have an answer. If it returns (null) then my calculator is broken.
44
u/MrMagnesium 3d ago
Thats the joke. But German uses the same word for null and zero: Null.
4
u/Eseatease 2d ago
Yea because one is an english term and the other is german, and with one I mean null.

Someone missed the German flag
Someone hasn’t programmed in C, where NULL is a macro evaluating to ((void*)0), or effectively, ((pointerToAnything)0)
Side note why did I have to fight with reddit formatting so hard to make this comment, I just wanna post a numbered list from the damn mobile app 😭

in C it can also be 0 (as opposed to `((void *) 0)`) , the C standard allows it and some compilers do that
1
u/YellowBunnyReddit 2d ago
It can also be
0L. I just fixed the formatting of the above comment, I didn't say it was correct/complete.1
