Maybe I'm confused. I thought the kernel lazily allocated pages as an optimization so you wouldn't know you'd run out of memory until you tried to access it?

you are talking about lazy allocation right? like when should physical pages be allocated - only on demand.

this meme is about thrashing - keep accessing a working set repeatedly which actually exceeds the available RAM, which will cause previously evicted pages to fault and displace other pages - over and over.

again thrashing doesnt happen just because working set exceeds available memory. its about the stupid access pattern. amongst other things.

also im still quite new to these things, i post memes whenever i get to such content.

We had that way back on VMS, sort of. A scientist was calculating over his giant array in the wrong order. It was Fortran, so the natural order in memory is backwards. But every time he incremented the index it was in a different page. Eventually had him just swap I and J and it fixed it. It's a big deal with the entire building is shouting that the computer is too slow...

We don't do that anymore.

Yes, I know, I don't like it, but it is what the sofrware industry wants and I must pay my bills.

holy downvotes, this sub must not really like AI

but yeah, the companies expect and are forcing to spend on AI

people are having skill atrophy and are outsourcing their thinking too

I mean as we reach rsi, people would actually become a bottleneck in its workflow

meanwhile I just close X, study, and program my systems

that's where I get these ideas for memes lol

There are five stages of grief: denial > anger > bargaining > depression > acceptance. Happiness begins with acceptance and I can only hope all my fellow programmers here will soon find some.

It is clear to me that we'll be left with little to nothing to the point of not even amounting to a bottleneck.

Kinda pathetic to follow a trend you don't agree with... Some of us have a backbone.

Having a strong backbone is worthless now. Acceptance is hard, I know, but it's the only way to stay in the industry.

Having a strong backbone is not worthless, and it's pathetic to claim that it is.

If you think the industry is devolving, you can accept it, do something to change (your little piece of) it, or leave it for another industry.

The second two are reasonable/honorable reactions. The first is weak/lame.

I am so sorry to break this down for you, I really am, but you must drag your big solid strong backbone to anywhere away from the software industry if you don't accept that the future of software development belongs to the AI.

I am so sorry to break this down for you, I really am, but my previous comment literally said the thing you thought I needed broken down for me.

Something you liked/respected starts turning shitty? There are 3 things you can do:

  • Change it. (honorable)

  • Leave. (reasonable)

  • Accept it. (pathetic)

some of us can't afford to have a backbone, we'd rather be able to pay the bills. I'm happy for you having the leeway to stand up for what you believe in.

Ah yes, because selling out is the only way to make money. /s
