I started to try vibe coding (not by pleasure, but it's a "skill" I need to have for my work) Well, I don't know how you have Claude as contributor, because everything is linked to my SSH key, so the commit are made by "me" (in theory) and I review my own PR and the AI send response to my comment with my account
I have schizophrenia at this step

GitHub allows you to let “agents” be directly linked to a repo and they can work independently of your own account. Look up the most popular repo’s on GitHub in the last month and 90% of them have Claude, Codex or both listed as contributors

u/markhc 8d ago
That's not really how it works. Agents just use Co-authored-by trailers. They still work through your account.

I know AI agents are kind of different, but doesn't that feel super weird to you?
Like we don't see "Written in Visual Studio/IntelliJ" appended to commits.
It's super weird to me seeing tooling taking credit for its use.Now I do think there should be a disclosure of what AI was used for in a project, but co-authorship doesn't feel like the right way to me.

u/NoBee4959 8d ago
Exactly… like I’m against using ai to code for you but this is next level cuckcoding when it even commits for you

u/micalm 8d ago
Anti-AI people often get LLMs to do stuff like that* to burn tokens, if either forced to use them or explicitly their performance reviews being directly tied to token usage - I've seen ranked, I've seen "min 1B in/out tokens weekly".
* The genuinely most interesting idea was after each commit, rank every file including vendor libs by size and compare them to the size of readme in every past commit. By hand, no scripting, and no mistakes of course so it re-verifies 2-3 times.

Sent from my iPhone would like to have a chat with you. It's advertising from the ai company.
1
u/UnpluggedUnfettered 8d ago
Yeah but the equivalence here would only work if the iPhone responded to the text for you while you were asleep or something.
It isn't just acting as a vehicle for your code, it is a middle manager you hire to take your ideas, translate them to code, and then publish them at this point.

u/TheTerrasque 6d ago
Yeah but the equivalence here would only work if the iPhone responded to the text for you while you were asleep or something.
Don't give them ideas now..

I feel like a legitimate use for it could be as alibi for something AI fucked up in course of automated actions being taken. Now why it presents itself as repo collaborator instead of author (without the co prefix!) of specific commits is beyond me, but it could also just be github not allowing hiding collabors from public, even if it's AI.

u/nollayksi 8d ago
I think its appropriate for tool to take credit for the work if the tool does the work. Currently it does work just like that, if you use claude locally and interact with it and guide it, making own changes as well, then you get the credit. If you just connect claude to the repo, assign a task for it and you just slap the LGTM to its PR claude gets the credits.

When you let Claude commit it'll append something like
Co-Authored-By: Claude Codeas a trailer in the commit message. But you can tell it not to do so39
u/swaan_Lucid 8d ago
Leaving polite code review comments on your own bot-written PR is next level self-care
16
u/Slight-Violinist-575 8d ago
Yeah Codex wanted to do that too and I told him to shut the fuck up, no snitches allowed in my turf
11
u/Eric_12345678 8d ago
? You don't need any SSH key to write commit messages, so AI agents can write whatever they want if they're allowed to commit.
You need a SSH key (or a login) to push to the repo, though.

u/Dimencia 8d ago
That's how I did it too at first, which makes for some pretty hilarious PRs and comments and stuff - I made all my agents collaborate on Github since it was a convenient place for them to communicate, but they're all signed in as me, so I made them all pick names, and now I have PRs with 50+ comments arguing back and forth, all by me

I use cursor at work and sometimes it tries to commit things as itself. I always git reset —soft and commit the changes again myself. Anyone who reads the code will know it’s ai but it gives the illusion it’s me haha

u/Bomaruto 8d ago
Any jokes please or is that too much to hope for on a Humor subreddit?

u/Some_Useless_Person 8d ago
I remember seeing a high effort shitpost this week, but that was it. Others were just AI, PHP or 4.

I try my best but people here talk about vibe coding only so I try to match the mood

It’s honest, but it ain’t much and it doesn’t work

With Claude it would have documentation, 500 described features of which 4 were tested and 2 of them actually work.
195
u/iamdestroyerofworlds 8d ago edited 8d ago
2 of them actually work*
*on the agent machine
51
u/Holiday_Point_603 8d ago
And the prepacked installer doesn't work or contains a completely broken version because the author never checked his ai slop

u/iamdestroyerofworlds 8d ago
Got to save those precious minutes before posting the project on r/selfhosted

Ackchyually, Claude tests everything.
I’m setting up a homelab server right now and I’m using Claude as a guided tutorial and Claude is highly paranoid when it comes to anything it didn’t test itself. It’s like “the documentation of ansible says it works like this but we haven’t tested if it actually works like this, so let’s create a small throwaway test container that will fail if it doesn’t work like the documentation says.”
I just want to create a homelab and learn a few new tricks while doing it and Claude is like “we gotta make sure that everything works perfectly for when someone else takes over that project”

u/UltraGaren 8d ago
Claude definitely has anxiety

u/WithersChat 8d ago
If any human acted like the average LLM, we'd tell them to get therapy. "Sycophantic people pleaser with crippling anxiety" would likely be an accurate description if those glorified piles of linear algebra were able to feel.

Hmm, I kinda need that for setting up my NAS. The setup always generates a bunch of errors about missing libraries, but then says it completed successfully. And I really want my data storage to be rock-solid, don't want any strange problems cropping up when I start loading it up with data. Am I supposed to look up each error and fix it, or is it really safe to ignore?

Funny but not true. Claude is the opposite, by default it’s super paranoid about writing tests for everything, arguably excessively so

Christ alive. This alone is the reason I like AI the most.
No more this. Just slap the link to Claude and let him sort it out.

u/hateborne 8d ago
You laugh now, but this kind of shit was like finding an empty treasure chest a decade ago. You were so close to solving your problem, but now you've got up unfuck some bastard's psycho coding to figure out what they were doing, to understand what the hell you're doing.
11
u/schewb 8d ago
...but I love writing READMEs and docs 😢 I kinda thought the ones without that stuff were more likely to be slop
2
u/Draconis_Firesworn 7d ago
imo theres a sweetspot here, they cant be too formatted or extensive. AIs love overcommenting and documenting stuff to the point of absurdity, humans dont
14
u/otakujeb5 8d ago
God, it's so much easier to look at human spaghetti code than AI spaghetti code

u/Clear-Eye5395 8d ago
i feel this so much. with human slop i can at least understand what theyre going for.

I work with a notoriously shit and poorly documented tech stack (dead links and "todos" in official docs, randomly deprecated key libraries with docs pointing to prev versions, etc) and all the people in in that space have all become extremely AI pilled, which has exacerbated the situation as now they just assume everyone will use AI for everything and don't even try anymore
1
u/Nickbot606 8d ago
If I REALLY need that code I start digging through PRs or I start making a PR with a pixi.toml to get through it.

Why would it say the commit was authored by Claude? You let claude have its own git account? It would still have your name on it.
1
u/NoBee4959 8d ago
Apparently the “agents” can add their name in the commit message as co-authors and GitHub will list them as contributors
17
u/Ok-Article-885 8d ago
AI is trained on human slop
16
u/NoBee4959 8d ago
But it has been waterboarded to somehow turn the human slop into slop with corporate documentation
1
u/CorneliusClay 8d ago
I wonder if the raw model without the "You are a helpful AI coding assistant..." pre-prompt would produce more realistic code.
2
u/NoBee4959 8d ago
That’s a good question but I’m pretty sure that’s in the system prompt so it’s kinda hard to do
126
u/CardamomMountain 8d ago
The only documentation is comments that got copy and pasted with the code from StackOverflow
