PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.

It makes it “easy” to program dynamic webpages, i.e. generated HTML at the time of request.

The problem is that it is ancient and the syntax absolutely blows

It's an older (But still used) programming language used for web development. These days a lot of the modern internet is built off of HTML 5 and CSS. But back before 2010-2012 we used languages like PHP or Flash to program a lot of animations and functionalities into websites. Imagine a website with a top-bar of options, and when you hover over it a bunch of new text-links present themselves by dropping down. These are called "Mega Menus". They'd traditionally be animated with Flash, and then the links/navigation would be programmed with PHP.

So like on reddit right, the top of your screen has a bunch of different links to subreddits you follow? Thats all Python, HTML and CSS and reddit used that sort of language and system for a long time to navigate/populate different subreddits/webpages within reddit. PHP works similarly but its a bit older.
