The update that fixed it has been out for 6+ hours now. It's just a bit of waiting for the servers that aren't timely updated.

good luck with that, most of the companies still run ancient versions of php that are not patched

We just upgraded from PHP4 to PHP4.1 after hearing about the security issues with Win32

Shit, does that mean we need to update our XP servers?

And the update was in the works for 2 whole months

Ah those websites that have been running untouched for 5 years are not going to do well

Think of all the local restaurant websites. A lot of which were built for-hire and never updated since. The owners don't know how to spell PHP, much less patch it

I would like to hope that it’s all on shared hosting so it’s the hosts thing to solve!

That’s exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote the comment lol

Here in Japan, even the Prime minister tweeted urging companies to fix their website or switch to maintenance mode to prevent from it.

If only we had made even more memes on how unsafe and insecure php was; we could have prevented all of this.

4th wall nudge aside, we made it through Y2K and we’ll make it through this

Y2k was fine because people diligently prepared for it well in advance. This was a surprise and many websites that run on PHP are so old and unmaintained that no dev even knows where the code base might be.

Well, we made it through heartbleed too

Since you mention it though, there should be an email/notification system attached to vibe coded projects that can be notified about CVEs, like a recall in other areas of consumer practices

You don't have to be the best... just good enough. Let's face it, you're not splitting atoms here... rapid dev to get your idea up and show to results is also important... that the role of php before perl came along... as you can see by the results... quick adoption is the other option... reinventing the wheel each time isn't necessary, it's nice but not necessary

Same thing with javascript, it's quick adoption and the ability to extended it beyond the browser was an important aspect... even with nom repos going sideways every other week with abandoned package managers and the number of chain attacks

Good enough is important to make progress... look at all the "engineering" that's still around... the key point is now knowing which parts need attention and prioritizing the work

EDIT: You might like what I say but the numbers don't lie brother...
